Testing Drones
to Pick Up and Repair Cellphones
With the recent Federal Aviation Administration announcement
on April 13, 2015, granting exemption to Amazon, drone
delivery to quickly ship packages of up to five pounds will be
enabled “safely and soon” in the US, according to Amazon
officials.
Anticipating the impending use of this cutting edge technology,
a Palm Desert based company covering all of the US, Bumblebee
Wireless, is testing drones as a delivery vehicle for their
customers to either buy, sell, or repair cellphones quickly and
conveniently.
Aptly named Bumblebee Air , the service would use a small,
unmanned aircraft delivery service. “The concept would
be to serve customers within a 10-mile radius of our repair
center or a licensed Bee Squad Technician.”, said Coachella
Valley business owner, James Uberti, founder and CEO of
the company. “Customers would order through an iTunes or
Android APP, to repair, sell, or purchase a new or certified preowned
cellphone or tablet.”
“One day, the drones of Bumblebee Air will be as common as
delivery vehicles on the road today.” Uberti said.
This is the latest futuristic effort by Uberti, who was an
e-commerce pioneer in the 1990’s and more recently
popularized the Bee Squad certification standards. “We
are working with several drone and software manufacturers
to develop a fully autonomous commercial grade octocopter
delivery system. The service would use UAV/Drone, GPS, SMS
text and or voice messaging technology to pick up or deliver
a cellphone. As part of our Join the Bee Squad Technician
program, every licensed technician will receive a Bumblebee
Air drone to service his or her respective licensed location.
Our goal is to have over 5,000 licensed technicians signed up
nationwide before drones are approved for commercial use.”
Uberti said.
“The goal of the new delivery system is to offer ultimate
convenience and speed for Bumblebee Wireless customers
by having phones repaired and back in their hands in under 60
minutes, without the customer ever having to leave the comfort
of their home or office.
“If you happen to drop your phone and break it while golfing,
we could have your phone picked up, repaired and back to
you before you get to the 18th hole. Customers would simply
go to our website or app order, then select our Bumblebee
Air Turnaround, and enter their contact information. Within
minutes, a drone will be dispatched for pick up or delivery. For our
customers selling their used or broken Apple or Android device
we will pay our customers in a matter of hours of receiving their
device, vs. days or weeks that are employed by traditional recommerce
providers.”, added Uberti.
With the impending 2 to 5 years before the FAA regulates and
approves the use of drones for services for commercial use, Uberti
and his team will continue to test and work with manufacturers
to perfect this new service for its nationwide customers. Once
approved, the company will be ready to deploy this service
immediately. Although this time frame may be optimistic, the
company believes it is not a matter of if, but when, this ultra
convenient delivery service will be put into service commercially.”
