powder. It was not anywhere near a maximum<br />
load, but rather an accuracy load<br />
delivering a bit over 1000 fps. The recoil<br />
was nearly similar with both guns. Trying a<br />
hotter factory load of Western 240 grain<br />
HSP (index 44MHSP) we noted the Ruger<br />
Redhawk delivered what could be described<br />
as a "hard push" vs. the "sharp<br />
whip" of the S&W 29.<br />
As expected, the challenge of an accuracy<br />
test was finally delivered as we polished<br />
off the second box of meticulous individually<br />
weighed reloads. Targets were<br />
set up at 25 yards and firing was to be off<br />
the bench. We would not really be shooting<br />
against each other as we were very well<br />
matched in ability. We were comparing<br />
guns and would each shoot several targets<br />
with both guns. As mentioned earlier, I<br />
was, in effect, matching an out-of-the-box<br />
Redhawk against a custom tuned M29.<br />
I wish I could report to you that something<br />
spectacular happened. It didn't!<br />

Test firing Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag.<br />
New Ruger did well against S&W M29.<br />
Both guns were so good that the whole<br />
thing got sort of boring. Our groups, no<br />
matter who was shooting which gun,<br />
stayed consistently within Jl/2 to 2Y2 inches.<br />
At times I would beat my own Ruger using<br />
Bill's S&W, and he would beat his S&W<br />
using my Ruger. The better group of 5<br />
shots was seldom more than I/.! inch<br />
smaller. Ifwe proved anything at all, it was<br />
our own honesty in evaluating the potential<br />
of the new Redhawk.<br />
It is this potential, however, that makes<br />
this report worthy ofnote. The Ruger Redhawk<br />
is capable of delivering, out-of-thebox,<br />
accuracy equal to a much more expensive<br />
quality handgun which sported an<br />
accuracy job by a fine pistolsmith. In additionto<br />
this the Ruger is a more modern design,<br />
stronger, and made of better materials.<br />
Having satisfied our curiosity,' we<br />
pocketed our shoulder holsters, and<br />
headed up to an old abandoned farmhouse<br />
on a hill that was just plumb<br />
plagued with rockchucks. Heck, who<br />
