Teaching Law for the Layperson
THE NEW JERSEY STATE BAR FOUNDATION
REACHES INTO THE SCHOOLS TO TEACH
CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS ABOUT THE LAW
THROUGH HANDS-ON PROGRAMS LIKE LAW FAIR
AND LAW ADVENTURE; THE VINCENT J. APRUZZESE
HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION;
LAW-RELATED EDUCATION CONFERENCES FOR
TEACHERS; A SPEAKERS BUREAU AND A VIDEO
LOAN LIBRARY; AS WELL AS OTHER ACTIVITIES.
Committed to violence prevention, the Foundation also
offers conflict resolution and peer mediation training
sessions where participants receive the
Foundation’s “Conflict Resolution and Peer
Mediation Guides” containing lesson plans
that teachers can take back to their classrooms.
Another component of the
Foundation’s violence prevention initiative
is its Teasing and Bullying program
where teachers and administrators are
educated about the myths and facts of bullying
and developing a school-wide
approach to combat the problem.
To further promote understanding of the
law, the Foundation launched its legal newspaper
for kids, The Legal Eagle, in the fall of 1996. Subscriptions
have increased tremendously over the years and the
newspaper is now distributed to nearly 340,000 elementary,
middle and high school students in more than 2,700
schools across the state. Published three times a year, the
newspaper is a resource for students and teachers that
stimulates discussion about the law and how it impacts
daily life.
Launched in the fall of 2001 and also published three
times a year is the Foundation’s tolerance newsletter,
titled, Respect. Distributed to nearly 280,000 middle and
high school students in more than 1,500 schools, Respect
has tackled such controversial topics as re-segregation,
genocide, gay marriage, English-only laws, banning the
Confederate flag and discrimination against the disabled.
In a further effort to combat intolerance, the
Foundation entered into a partnership with the George
Street Playhouse Touring Theatre Tolerance Initiative to
bring plays that address issues of school violence tolerance,
prejudice, peer pressure and cyber-bullying to
schools in disadvantaged areas.
The Foundation also provides a number of law-related
publications either online or in hard copy, including
Residential Construction and Renovation: A Legal Guide
for New Jersey Homeowners, Domestic Violence: The Law
and You, The Right to Special Education in New
Jersey — A Guide for Advocates, Law Points for
Senior Citizens, Consumer’s Guide to New
Jersey Law, Disability Law Primer, Students’
and the Law in New Jersey. Some of these
publications are available in Spanish and
all are available in alternative formats,
including Braille and audiocassette, for the
visually impaired. In addition to its publications,
the Foundation has expanded its communications programming
to include videotape presentations on child
custody, juror orientation and domestic violence.
Conferences for senior citizens, the disabled, teachers
and drug counselors have also helped thousands in New
Jersey to better understand the law.
The Foundation’s public service programs are funded
by the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey and are
all offered free of charge. For copies of materials or for
