About Bio-ethanol: Drivers for growth
•USA:
Focus on ethanol due to MTBE ban
•European Union:
Biofuel directive: member states will try to achieve 2% share of fuel
consumption through renewable sources (bio-ethanol and biodiesel) by the
end of 2005 and 5.75% share in 2010.
Each member state can implement own tax incentives
Focus on biofuels due to targets for reduction of emission (Kyoto),
reduction of mineral oil dependency and agricultural interests
•Other countries:
Brazil, China, Thailand have programs for biofuels to reduce oil
dependency, improve trade balance and reduce greenhouse gases
About Bio-ethanol: e-blends vs ETBE
2 roads to cleaner/renewable fuels using ethanol:
• ETBE
Similar as MTBE, but of renewable source: ethanol
• E-blends
Direct blending of ethanol into car fuel
