Describing Probabilities
In a legend, a knight is given two sacks.
Each sack contains all gold nuggets,
all rocks, or a mixture of the two.
The knight can keep one of the sacks.
Ten times for each sack, the knight may
take an object, look at it, and return it.
How can this help the knight choose the
sack with more gold?
In Explore, you will model this situation
using paper bags and counters.
Your teacher will give you 2 paper bags, marked A and B.
Each bag contains 10 counters.
Each bag may contain all yellow counters, all blue counters,
or some counters of each colour.
The yellow counters represent gold nuggets.
The blue counters represent rocks.
➤ Draw a counter from bag A.
Record its colour and replace it.
Do this a total of 10 times.
Based on your results, use a word and a fraction to describe
how likely you are to draw a yellow counter from bag A.
➤ Repeat these steps for bag B.
➤ Based on your experiment, which bag would you choose? Why?
➤ Open the bags.
Did you make the correct choice? Explain.
