English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
CRICOS Code 051784G
Prepare your English language skills for academic study.
Who studies EAP?
EAP develops your English language
and academic study skills. Many of
our students wish to study English
at a higher level to meet entry
requirements for Curtin College or
prepare for university courses. EAP
also prepares you to begin the English
Language Bridging Program (ELB),
which upon successful completion
provides direct entry to Curtin
University.
What will I learn in EAP?
Our EAP programs teach academic
writing skills, reading skills,
listening and note-taking skills,
and presentation skills. You will also
be taught the language required to
succeed in a university context, which
prepares you for tertiary study and
the English Language Bridging (ELB)
program.
In our EAP courses, you will
also learn from regular guest
speakers, and have more time with
your teacher in our weekly small
group tutorial classes. You will also
learn more about Australia with the
new addition of Australian lifestyle,
culture and history content integrated
into our courses.
Who is in your class?
Students who are planning on
furthering their education at
university or other tertiary institutes.
Levels
EAP is offered at levels 1 and 2. If you
have a lower English level, you may
need to study General English before
beginning EAP. Your starting point will
be decided at the application stage
based on either results of a recognised
English language proficiency test, or
our placement test.
What will I be able to
do after completing:
English for Academic Purposes 1
Identify main ideas, details and
writer’s purpose in academic texts,
use note-taking techniques effectively
when listening to lectures, engage in
conversations on academic topics, and
write an academic essay using simple
and some complex sentence forms.
English for Academic Purposes 2
Distinguish between main ideas and
specific details in critically analysing
and evaluating extended academic
texts, understand and recognise
english.curtin.edu.au
language used in lectures, give an
academic presentation in a clear and
concise manner, and write an academic
essay using a combination of simple
and complex structures.
ASSESSMENTS
There are seven assessments in EAP,
which include two essays, a reading
test, a listening test, a group discussion,
a presentation, and a grammar and
language test.
