<strong>English</strong> Language Bridging (ELB)<br />

The <strong>Curtin</strong> <strong>English</strong> <strong>English</strong> Language Bridging (ELB) program has two entry points. If you are one IELTS<br />
band (or equivalent) below university entry, you’ll enrol in the 17 week course. If you are 0.5 IELTS band (or<br />
equivalent) below university entry, the 10 week ELB course is recommended.<br />
Who studies ELB?<br />
The <strong>English</strong> Language Bridging (ELB)<br />
course is an accelerated academic<br />
<strong>English</strong> program that prepares students<br />
from non-<strong>English</strong> speaking backgrounds<br />
for degree study at <strong>Curtin</strong> University.<br />
ELB provides entry into most <strong>Curtin</strong><br />
degree programs if you successfully<br />
complete the course and meet your<br />
required exit score.<br />
Choose this course if you:<br />
• want to develop your use of<br />
academic <strong>English</strong> to enable you to<br />
work more effectively during your<br />
university studies.<br />
• have a conditional offer from<br />
<strong>Curtin</strong> University which requires<br />
you to attend the ELB course<br />
and obtain a satisfactory <strong>English</strong><br />

Which program is right<br />
for me?<br />
You will join the longer or shorter course<br />
depending on your current <strong>English</strong> level<br />
and level of <strong>English</strong> required for your<br />
degree program. Your offer letter from<br />
<strong>Curtin</strong> <strong>English</strong> will indicate which course<br />
is appropriate.<br />
ELB 17 weeks<br />
The first seven weeks focuses on<br />
grammar and vocabulary, in addition<br />
to intensive reading and writing skills<br />
development. You will study from a set<br />
of course books and produce weekly<br />
writing tasks related to the texts that<br />
you are reading. There is also a focus on<br />
improving speaking skills to assist you<br />
in participating in seminars. The next<br />
10 weeks is outlined below.<br />
ELB 10 weeks<br />
The 10 week program focuses on<br />
producing two academic research<br />
papers. You will develop the skills<br />
to use library technologies, access<br />
research materials and practice how to<br />
incorporate others’ ideas into your own<br />
academic writing. There is an emphasis<br />
on referencing conventions and<br />
academic style. You will also acquire<br />
the oral skills necessary to participate<br />
in seminar discussions and academic<br />
presentations and listening and notetaking<br />
skills.<br />
