Notes for Alice M. Ewing:
General Notes:
Alice Ewing
By J. M. Woods
October, 1937
(1)Sometimes it is given to us to know a valiant character, one who for years has labored
to the serv-ices of others, one whose individual life purpose has been subordinated to the
ends of others, one who has sacrificed personal pleasures that the life pathway of others
might be adorned by the blooming flowers and verdant grasses of happiness.
Of such splendid character I would write to you, for her people and mine were among
those who settled grand old Guadalupe, her mother and mine were girlhood friends, my
grandfather gave me water to drink from the springs in old Guadalupe which bear the
name of her grandfather --- and it is my honor to show to you who know it not the glory that
is hers.
Pneumonia struck down Stephen Malone Ewing, Alice's father, when his wife and ten
children were ill with the "la grippe," two days later the mother, shocked and heartbroken,
followed-in his wake, but conscious of her approaching demise and with her mother heart
burdened with concern for the future of her children - the youngest, little more than babes,
exacted a promise from Alice that she would never leave the family and that she would
perform the duties of a mother.
Impelled by a deep religious reverence for the sacredness of a promise made to those
who are about to enter the silent valley, which was inherited from her long and glorious line
of Scotch-Irish ances-tors, Alice Ewing has kept that promise to this good day - through the
years she has "kept the home fires burning," she has been the one to whom "the Ewing
children" have always turned for guidance and assistance.
To understand and appreciate her character and life work, as you should, you must know
something of those from whom she sprang, something of the story of her ancestors, of the
impulses which actu-ated t hem in their centuries old contribution to the record of the
human race.
The Scotch branch of the Ewing family were identified with what afterwards was known as
the Lowlands of Scotland. There was an intimate connection however between the early
Scots and the people afterwards known as the Irish. The Scot spoke Gaelic and while he
afterwards absorbed other peoples and manifested the effect of those influences, his
kinship with the Irish was always most evi-dent.
Generation 4 (con't)
The early Scots were a most enterprising people having trade routes into the commercial
centers of Europe and Asia. They penetrated into Asia Minor where they acquired a
knowledge of Christianity at Antioch where St. Paul had founded his Church and this they
brought back into what is now Ire-land about 400 A. D. There sprang up schools, churches
and industries, a very intelligent people were developed. Among the famous men who
formed a part of this civilization was Columbia, a rep-resentative Celt of royal birth, tall,
red-haired with light blue eyes who about 553 A. D. founded a monastery upon the Island
of Iona. From here missionaries traveled to what is now Central Europe, England, France
and Northern Italy.
The warriors of ancient Scotland were large, red-haired men, they frequently painted their
bodies blue and went into battle in chariots, the wheels of which were equipped with
scythes so arranged that they mowed down the enemy. During one period they were led
against the invaders by their ruler, Queen Scota. It is to be noted that the women of this
race are renowned for their courage and sagacity as well as for their virtue.
Of the Scotch-Irish it has been said that they made "an amazing contribution to the
progress of all branches of business - earning, industry, art, science, the professions,
government and Christianity."
Much of the early history of the Scotch-Irish has been preserved by the work of one of the
famous members of the Clan Ewing, Alexander Ewing, D. C. L., long Bishop of Argyle and
the Isles.
Religious intolerance of first one sect and then the other, combined with economic
tyranny, drove many Scotch and Irish families, among them the Ewings, to America. Many
came over in the "Eagle Wing" which began transporting emigrants in 1635.
Various branches of the Clan Ewing have rendered valiant service for God, society and
the State of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North
Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, TX and California. Their loyalty to their
government, their devo-tion to their church, their fealty to their friends has been as that of
an early Chief-tan of the Clan who said to Bonnie Prince Charlie, "Come weal, come woe,
I'll follow thee."
Branches of the Clan Ewing were among the more prominent organizers of the
Cumberland Pres-byterian Church.
The Guadalupe County Ewings came from Mississippi. The father of the family bore one
of the he-reditary family names, "Alexander." His son, Stephen Malone, married Miss
Margaret Fennell, "Old Doctor Jim" Fennell's daughter, and Alice was their oldest
daughter.
But what of Alice Ewing's promise to her dying mother?
She gathered her brothers and sisters about her in the family home on Dry Fork, she kept
the wolf from the door, she did the work of a man, she plowed, she hoed, she gathered
corn, she averaged her three hundred pounds of cotton per day during the cotton season,
she managed the family finances, she sent the children to school and she taught them to
follow in the footsteps of their fathers!
When farming conditions became unfavorable she moved to San Antonio, bought a
home, operated a dairy, milked her own cows, cared for own milk (and boasts that her
dairy was rated as the best in this entire milk shed) xxxxxx(2).
Descendants of William Ewing Jr.
Generation 4 (con't)
During the war Alice saw her brothers march away in their country's uniform as their
fathers had done and she, as her mothers had done, worked at home to sustain local
conditions and to provide necessaries and comforts for those at the front. During the
winter of 1917 she knitted twenty-six sweaters and a large number of socks for the Red
Cross.
Of course Alice had to interest herself in politics, she became the boss of the East End
and never was on the losing side but once, "and that was when the men went to sleep."
She considers the high point in her career as the re-elections of Mae Chambers as Mayor
when she "voted" 3,200 men and women! When she carried her "box" to the City Hall that
night the men who were chiefly interested in the election, met her at the steps and
anxiously asked as to the results and when they learned how things had gone in her
section of the city, lifted her onto their shoulders and carried her into the City Hall!
Today, as the result of years of hard onerous overwork, she is a helpless cripple, and for
the past seven years has occupied a wheel chair, and her left hand shriven.
She fortunately possessed the inherited frugality, she "put away a little silver now and
then" and her financial needs are provided for.
But even yet she works!
The little children in the neighborhood adore her and spend a large portion of each day
upon her front porch. There she entertains them with childish games and teaches them to
pray and to sing the songs her people have sung as they fought, worked, and served God
and humanity all the way from the Lowlands of Scotland to the sun-kissed valley of the San
Geronimo!
When talking of the future, planning work in spite of her tremendous handicap, tears
spring to her eyes, but she laughs them away and when animated raises and swings her
good right arm - much af-ter the fashion I imagine of Queen Scota when she waved and
called her armed charioteers into battle against the invading Romans!
Methinks that in the gloaming of the summer evenings when she sits in her wheel chair
along upon her vine-clad porch, that out of the far distant past the spirits of her ancestors
come to visit her! That to the tunes of the bagpipes, in companies and alone, they pass
before her in silent review, wild, rude, tarton plaid warriors with large and broad-sword,
quiet, modest nuns, priests in cap and gown, stern-faced Covenanters with Psalm books
and hymnals, men of letters, soldiers and statesmen from the New World, and always last
in that array a small, sweet-faced daughter of old Gualdalupe around whom Love has cast
an ethereal halo and proclaim:
"Verily, Alice, thou hast been true laughter of thy fathers, thou didst keep thy promise!"
Posthumous award of the Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to Lt. Lloyd H. Hughes,
Co., TX, for heroism that cost his life in the Ploesti, Rumania oil raid August 1, 1943.
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohiia2.htm
Rank and organization: Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Corps, 564th Bomber Squadron, 389th
Bomber Group, 9th Air Force. Place and date: Ploesti Raid, Rumania, 1 August 1943. Entered service
at: San Antonio, Tex. Born: 12 July 1921, Alexandria, La. G.O. No.: 17, 26 February 1944. Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry in action and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of
duty. On August 1943, 2d Lt. Hughes served in the capacity of pilot of a heavy bombardment aircraft
participating in a long and hazardous minimum-altitude attack against the Axis oil refineries of Ploesti,
Rumania, launched from the northern shores of Africa. Flying in the last formation to attack the target,
he arrived in the target area after previous flights had thoroughly alerted the enemy defenses.
Approaching the target through intense and accurate antiaircraft fire and dense balloon barrages at
dangerously low altitude, his plane received several direct hits from both large and small caliber
antiaircraft guns which seriously damaged his aircraft, causing sheets of escaping gasoline to stream
from the bomb bay and from the left wing. This damage was inflicted at a time prior to reaching the
target when 2d Lt. Hughes could have made a forced landing in any of the grain fields readily
available at that time. The target area was blazing with burning oil tanks and damaged refinery
installations from which flames leaped high above the bombing level of the formation. With full
knowledge of the consequences of entering this blazing inferno when his airplane was profusely
leaking gasoline in two separate locations, 2d Lt. Hughes, motivated only by his high conception of
duty which called for the destruction of his assigned target at any cost, did not elect to make a forced
landing or turn back from the attack. Instead, rather than jeopardize the formation and the success of
the attack, he unhesitatingly entered the blazing area and dropped his bomb load with great precision.
After successfully bombing the objective, his aircraft emerged from the conflagration with the left wing
aflame. Only then did he attempt a forced landing, but because of the advanced stage of the fire
enveloping his aircraft the plane crashed and was consumed. By 2d Lt. Hughes' heroic decision to
complete his mission regardless of the consequences in utter disregard of his own life, and by his
gallant and valorous execution of this decision, he has rendered a service to our country in the defeat
of our enemies which will everlastingly be outstanding in the annals of our Nation's history.
Nine other crewmembers were killed and two were taken prisoners of war.
Previously all members of the crew had been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Hazel had
already received the Purple Heart awarded her husband.
Native of Alexandria, LA, Lt. Hughes graduated from Refugio High School, Refugio, Refugio Co., TX,
attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX and graduated from Texas A & M. He came to the
cadet center in March, 1942, to start his aviation training. He took primary training at Tulsa and basic
training at Enid, OK and received his wings and commission at Lubbock, TX November 10, 1942.
Two days before his graduation at Lubbock he married the former Miss Hazel Dean Ewing of San
Antonio, TX, who has been making her home there with her parents, Jefferson Davis and Etta Lee
Carlile Ewing, Sr.
After graduation Lt. Hughes, a former Texas A & M student, took four-engine bomber training at Ft
Worth, TX and was stationed at Tucson, El Paso, and Denver for brief periods before coming home in
May of 1943 for a six-day leave.
He arrived in England June 14, 1943, and four days later went to North Africa. He participated in the
first bombing attack on Rome and then joined the group planning the Ploesti raid.
Lloyd Herbert Hughes, Junior was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on July 12, 1921. He was the son of
Lloyd Herbert Hughes, Senior and Mildred Rainey Hughes. His family and friends called him Pete.
Little is known about his early life, but in 1923 his mother was the postmaster of the Onalaska post
office in Polk County, Texas.
Mildred married John Raymond Jordan in 1924 and Pete became a member of the Jordan
family. The family grew and Pete soon had three little brothers. In 1930, the family made the long trip
from East Texas to Refugio, Refugio County Texas in an old canvas-topped model t Ford. In 1931
another brother arrived and Pete now had four brothers to look after. Pete was very protective of his
younger brothers and everyone knew that if you messed with the Jordan boys, you would have to
answer to him
Pete attended school in Refugio and was the valedictorian at the seventh grade graduation.
In high school he participated in football, track, tennis and basketball. His junior year he was captain
of the basketball squad and captain of the football team his senior year.
He grew up in the hard years of the great depression. Like many students in the those times,
he contributed to the families’ support. He worked after school at various jobs like ushering at the
local movie theater, running a paper route and at one time had an ice route. When he was old
enough, he spent his summers working as a roughneck in the oil fields.
In 1939, the Jordan family moved to Corpus Christi, Nueces County Texas but Pete remained
in Refugio to complete his senior year. In the fall of 1939, the handsome, six foot two, 184 pound
young man enrolled at the agricultural and mechanical college of Texas and elected petroleum
engineering as his major. As a freshman in the Texas A & M Corps of Cadets, he was a member of
Company G, Infantry.
Experiencing academic difficulties in his first semester, he withdrew from Texas A & M and
enrolled in Corpus Christi Junior College. He returned to Texas A & M in September 1941 and was
making his grades.
When his father became ill, Pete withdrew from school and returned home to help support his
family. Four days after withdrawing, pearl harbor was bombed and America was at war.
Pete enlisted as an aviation cadet in January 1942. He was twenty years old at the time.
After completing his flight training he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force on
November 10, 1942. Two days previously, he had married Hazel Dean Ewing in San Antonio, Bexar
County Texas.
In April 1943, he was assigned to the 564 th bomb squadron. His squadron was one of four
squadrons in the 389 th heavy bombardment group. The group was stationed at Lowry field, Colorado.
Pete’s crew of four officers and six enlisted men were assembled and assigned to a B-24
Liberator heavy bomber. After additional training, the group flew to England to join the 8 th Air Force.
Unknown to Pete and the other members of his bomb group, the unit destined for North Africa
to participate in a raid on the oil refineries in the Ploesti, Romania area.
Two weeks after arriving in England, the group flew to Benghazi, Libya. After arrival at
Benghazi, Pete’s crew flew four combat missions to Italy, Sicily and Crete. The group also spent
many hours practicing low-level bomb runs in the desert.
Five bomb groups had been assembled for the raid on Ploesti. Three eighth air force groups
from England joined two bomb groups of the ninth air force stationed in North Africa. The Ploesti oil
refineries produced one-third of the Germans’ aviation gasoline, Panzer fuel, benzene and lubricants.
Ploesti was a high priority target.
Several months earlier, the planners decided that a low-level mission would probably surprise
the German defenders and provide an opportunity for precision bombing. They also believed that a
single raid might be so successful that repeated high-level attacks would not be necessary. The
operation was named “Tidal Wave”.
Four of the bomb groups were assigned six refinery targets in Ploesti and Pete’s group was
assigned the seventh target located at Campina, 18 miles northwest of Ploesti. The plan called for a
minimum-altitude attack to be made in several waves of bombers.
The final briefing was on July 31 and the men of Tidal Wave were up at two a.m. on the
fateful day of August 1, 1943. Since only skeleton ground crews had made the trip to Africa, the men
who were to deliver the bombs had to help load their own.
Before dawn, the 178 overloaded B-24’s queued up for take-off. Each B-24 carried extra fuel
in bomb bay tanks and 4,300 pounds of bombs.
At seven o’clock, the tower controllers shot the flares to signal take-off. The air armada
climbed to 2,000 feet to form up for the 2400 mile round trip to Ploesti.
The flight path of the force took them to the island of Corfu, off the coast of Greece, then over
the mountains of Albania, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.
The force descended to 500 feet when they reached the Danube river and crossed into
Romania. They began to see the Romanian people and the beautiful countryside. Many of the
peasants smiled and waved as the planes passed over. Some airmen later reported seeing naked
girls bathing in a stream.
Things began to go wrong when the lead group took a wrong turn and, followed by a second
group, headed toward Bucharest instead of Ploesti. Once the error was recognized, the mission
commander broke radio silence and said “this is General Ent. We have missed our target. You are
cleared to strike targets of your choice.”
The three other groups, including Pete’s group turned at the proper point. They were
unaware that the lead groups had made an error. Arriving at their target, the bomber crews found
some of their targets already on fire. They were greeted with blinding black smoke and deadly fire
from enemy flak and machine gun defenses.
As Pete began his bomb run at between 50 and 100 feet, his gunners were firing their
50-caliber machine guns at flak batteries, at muzzle flashes of 20-millimeter guns hidden in haystacks,
at oil storage tanks and other ground targets.
Approaching the target, his plane received several direct hits. Sheets of escaping gasoline
streamed from the left wing and the extra fuel tanks. He could have made a force landing in any of
the grain fields in the area.
Ahead of him was a wall of fire from the burning oil tanks with the flames leaping high above
the bombing level of the formation. Rather than jeopardize the formation and the success of the
mission, Pete entered the blazing area and put his bombs on target.
his aircraft emerged from the target area with the left wing on fire. Only then did be attempt a
forced landing in a dry river bed. One report is that his left wing struck the river bank. Another report
was that his left wing broke away at a low level.
In any case, the plane crashed in flames. Six of the crew, included Pete, died in the crash.
Four survived, but two died soon after. The two survivors were taken prisoner by the Romanians and
survived the war.
Of the 178 aircraft dispatched to Ploesti, 162 reached the target area and only 89 returned to
crashed at allied bases on Malta, Sicily and Cyprus or landed in turkey where the crews were
interned.
The Medal of Honor was presented posthumously to Pete’s widow, Hazel, on April 18, 1944
in a ceremony at Kelly field in San Antonio.
On April 12, 1950, Pete was laid to his final rest at the fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
men?” The answer to his question is that you get such men from places like the corps of cadets at
