Kirk Session Book of Burt county Donegal
All efforts have been made to type the information exactly as it is written on the pages of information received from
Mr. Cresswell. Obviously, some errors in the interpretation of the information have been made. The index prepared
by Mr. Cresswell is printed where the baptism and marriage information is cursive. In many cases, the name in the
index is spelled different than the name when the information was recorded.
The numbers in the dates generally were separated with a slash, “/”, but not in all cases. In an effort to make the
dates a little easier to read and typed in a uniform manner, I have replaced the “/” with a “-“ between the day and
month and month and year. All of the dates in this information are before the calendar change in 1752. Therefore,
th
the first day of a year was March 25 . For some reason, Mr. Cresswell thought the first of the year began with April
1. Therefore, he put the multiple year, 18-3-1676/1677 accordingly. I have indicated the second year with two
digits to read 1676/77 except for the year 1699/1700. Although, the date, 4-2-1691/1692, is indicated incorrectly, I
am showing the information as it was written since 1692 is the correct year in this case.
When this index was created, I used the names as they are presented in the information. Then, I looked at the
information in the index that Mr. Cresswell sent and have entered the name he has with the name generated for the
index. Example: Crage and Craige both are in the records and the Cresswell index has Craig. I have entered
“[Craig]” by the names. The brackets “[ ]” are to indicate that I have added information to the data generated when
the index was created.
The names were doubled checked. In a few cases, I question the results of combining the names in the index, but did
not make any changes. I have tried to identify all of the names as Mr. Cresswell had them combined in the index.
If you have any questions concerning this information, please do not hesitate contacting me with your questions.
