Working Group 2 — Components and Converters<br />
This topic, bearing the same name as the working group,<br />
contained 34 regular papers divided into three presentation<br />
forums i.e. lectures session (3 papers) dialog session (24<br />
papers) and WATAB Sessions (7 papers). It must be noted<br />
that many papers presented in other topics, especially Power<br />
Quality and Electric Drive Control, contained significant information<br />
related to converter topologies. Also, the first Plenary<br />
Lecture - “State of art and developments of medium voltage<br />
converters”, presented by Prof. Steffen Bernet (TU Berlin,<br />
Germany), gave a very impressive picture of state progress<br />
in development and application of power electronics in high<br />
energy sector.<br />

Firstly, very up to date news about high power switches as<br />
IGCT and high voltage IGBT’s has been given. Then an<br />
overview of PWM medium voltage converters was given.<br />
Also the Plenary Lecture, delivered by Prof Hirofumi Akagi<br />
(Nakoga University of Technology, Japan) on the last day of<br />
the conference - “Modern active filters and traditional passive<br />
filters”, presented a large portion of converter topologies suitable<br />
for power quality improvement as active filter. Additionally<br />
two tutorials have been devoted to this subject, namely<br />
“Tutorial on Matrix Converters” conducted by Prof. Domenico<br />
Casadei (University of Bologna, Italy) and “Tutorial on Multilevel<br />
Converters” given by Jose Rodriguez (Technical University<br />
of Federico Santa Maria, Chile). Both tutorials have provided<br />
theoretical as well as practical knowledge about topologies,<br />
classification methods and control ideas. Discussions<br />
and advantages and disadvantages also took place. The hall<br />
was full of students during both tutorials..<br />
As regards the regular conference meetings, one lecture session<br />
devoted to converters and components subject was held<br />
(chaired Dr. Mietek Nowak), containing four, selected most<br />
interesting papers listed below:<br />
