arge and I are enjoying our 12th season with Lander University, and the athletic events are
some of the more memorable and exciting times for both of us.
Our two sons competed at the collegiate level, so we know firsthand the role athletics plays in each
university’s strategic plan. We are aware of the lessons of life which are learned on the playing fields
and courts. Whether it be basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis or volleyball, sports provide a
common denominator for all of us.
It seems that in a basketball arena everyone can appreciate the electricity of the slam dunk, the
coolness of the clutch free throw and the pressure of a last-second shot. And after the most amazing
of plays, it’s all right if you jump out of your seat and give the guy behind you a high five.
That’s what athletics is all about. And it happens right here in Lander’s Horne Arena.
Coach Kevin Pederson and the Lady Bearcats, and Coach Jeff Burkhamer and the men’s basketball
team have my best wishes for a successful and injury-free season.
Please join Marge and me as we support our Bearcats.
From Jeff May
Athletics Director
Welcome to Lander University Basketball 2011-12! We are excited about the upcoming season
and anticipate a strong showing by the Bearcats. I invite and encourage you to support coaches
Jeff Burkhamer and Steve Roberts and our team by attending as many games as your schedule
will permit. Make each game a family night out and also bring a friend.
Please take time to familiarize yourself with this publication. It provides excellent information on
our coaches, the history of the program and, most importantly, our student-athletes who represent
Lander.
“To be a member of a Lander University intercollegiate team is both a privilege and a responsibility. We
expect and demand that our student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the courts and fi elds and
that they perform with pride, poise and proper conduct. Character, citizenship and a spirit of volunteerism are
also expected of those who compete on behalf of Lander University. We believe these self-discipline activities
will assist all student-athletes in obtaining a degree and will equally benefi t them in becoming contributing
members of society."
