arge and I are enjoying our 12th season with Lander University, and the athletic events are
some of the more memorable and exciting times for both of us.
Our two sons competed at the collegiate level, so we know firsthand the role athletics plays in each
university’s strategic plan. We are aware of the lessons of life which are learned on the playing fields
and courts. Whether it be basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis or volleyball, sports provide a
common denominator for all of us.
It seems that in a basketball arena everyone can appreciate the electricity of the slam dunk, the
coolness of the clutch free throw and the pressure of a last-second shot. And after the most amazing
of plays, it’s all right if you jump out of your seat and give the guy behind you a high five.
That’s what athletics is all about. And it happens right here in Lander’s Horne Arena.
Coach Kevin Pederson and the Lady Bearcats, and Coach Jeff Burkhamer and the men’s basketball
team have my best wishes for a successful and injury-free season.
Please join Marge and me as we support our Bearcats.
From Jeff May
Athletics Director
Welcome to Lander University Basketball 2011-12! We are excited about the upcoming season
and anticipate a strong showing by the Bearcats. I invite and encourage you to support coaches
Jeff Burkhamer and Steve Roberts and our team by attending as many games as your schedule
will permit. Make each game a family night out and also bring a friend.
Please take time to familiarize yourself with this publication. It provides excellent information on
our coaches, the history of the program and, most importantly, our student-athletes who represent
Lander.
“To be a member of a Lander University intercollegiate team is both a privilege and a responsibility. We
expect and demand that our student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the courts and fi elds and
that they perform with pride, poise and proper conduct. Character, citizenship and a spirit of volunteerism are
also expected of those who compete on behalf of Lander University. We believe these self-discipline activities
will assist all student-athletes in obtaining a degree and will equally benefi t them in becoming contributing
members of society."
Bearcats add depth, are more athletic in 2011-12
Asked what the Lander men’s basketball team needs to improve
on the most in the 2011-2012 season, Bearcats thirdyear
head coach Jeff Burkhamer gave a one-word response.
“Offense,” he said.
Lander has more experience, depth and versatility this season
than last. The Bearcats hope this will translate into more scoring
and more victories.
“We have to do a better job scoring,” Burkhamer said. “We
have guarded people pretty well. We have stayed in games with
our defense. We just haven’t been
good enough offensively.”
“This year, we have added some
proven scorers,” said Burkhamer
“If we are able to score more points
and continue to guard well, it’s going
to help us in those close games.
“We will be better able to finish
some of those close games instead
of losing by one or two possessions,
now we can win by two or
three possessions.”
The Bearcats have seven returning
players this season and six new
players, most of whom also have
significant college playing experience
including several with All-
Conference honors at their previous
schools.
The seven returning players are
seniors Jermel Kennedy (Malton,
Ontario) and Darion Canty
sophomores Darius Carrier (Charlotte, N.C.), Stefan Tabasevic
(Belgrade, Serbia), Mac Mitchell (Charleston, S.C.) and Cody
Waterworth (Snellville, Ga.).
Newcomers include seniors Dwight Tolbert (Tifton, Ga.) and
Dennis Rumph (Lake Worth, Fla.), juniors Corey Wright (Harlem,
N.Y.), Patrick Powell (Columbus, Ga.) and Michael Lowe
(Greenwood, S.C.) and freshman Scott Elder (Perth, Australia).
“We are excited about the seven guys we’ve got back, and we
are excited about the seven new guys we’ve brought in,” Burkhamer
said. “We have experience coming back in all the positions,
because the returning players played valuable minutes last
year. And we have a lot of experienced kids who played at other
places joining our returning players.
“We have a good group to work with, we have depth this year,
and we are going to be able to do some different things on both
ends of the floor. There is not a lot of difference in talent from top
to bottom, so we will be able to play more people. We are long,
quick and athletic. We aren’t extremely big, but the league (Peach
Belt) is probably a little smaller than it has been in the past.”
With the exception of Elder, 12 of Lander’s 13 players have
college experience.
Last year, the Bearcats only had one returning player in senior
Tovi Bailey.
“We started over last year and decided to build from the
ground up with a solid foundation of young players,” Burkhamer
said. “We got a lot of experience. We lost a lot of close games
with those young kids. That experience will pay off this year,
with knowing how to prepare, battle and win in this league.”
Pruett and Kennedy were Lander’s statistical leaders last year
and will be relied upon heavily in 2011-2012, as will former All-
Peach Belt transfer Dwight Tolbert, who last played at Armstrong
Atlantic State three seasons ago.
“Pruett, Kennedy, Tolbert … you
start with those three because they have
been successful in the league, and you
build around them,” Burkhamer said.
Pruett, a 6-foot-4 wing, led the
Bearcats in scoring (15.5 points per
game), 3-point shooting (64-of-164,
39 percent) and free-throw percentage
(89-of-107, 83 percent) last year. He
ranked fourth in the PBC in three pointers
made per game and was seventh
in scoring and free throw percentage.
The sharp shooter scored 25 or more
points in a game six times, including a
career-high 34 points versus Southern
Wesleyan. The two-time PBC Player
of the Week also finished the season
strong, averaging 23 points over the
last five games.
“David has got to be one of the best
shooters in the country,” Burkhamer
said. “He is a really good catch-and-shoot guy, and he has added
being able to get his own shot off the dribble.”
Kennedy, a 6-6 post, was a double-double machine for Lander,
scoring and rebounding in double figures in the same game nine
times last year. He totaled 10.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per
game, scoring a career-high 22 points at Francis Marion. Kennedy
was was third in the PBC in rebounding and led or shared the
team high in rebounds in 20 of 26 games, including 36 rebounds
in a two-game stretch (19 versus Clayton State and 17 against
Armstrong Atlantic) in February.
“Jermel Kennedy is a real athletic, active post player,” Burkkhamer
said. “He is not real big weight-wise, but his ability to be
quick and play against bigger guys has been good for us. He had
a great summer. I think he is getting better offensively and we
know he will be active on the boards.”
A member of the last Armstrong Atlantic State team that
Burkhamer coached three years ago (2008-09), Tolbert led the
Pirates to a 23-7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth when
he averaged 15.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and was the
PBC Player of the Week once. The first-team All-Peach Belt
selection scored in double figures in 22 games.
Coach Jeff Burkhamer’s Prospectus
Bearcats have more depth and are more athletic in 2011-12
Continued from previous page
“I think Dwight will be one of the top five players in the
league,” Burkhamer said of the 6-5 senior. “He is so versatile. He
will be our starting three (wing), but can also play the four position
because he is strong enough to do that.
“He can shoot it from 3-point range (42 percent in 2008-09),
can drive it, can post up, goes to the offensive glass, gets to the
foul line and makes free throws. It may take a while to get him
back into game shape, but skillwise and talentwise, he is as good
as anybody in the league.”
In addition to Pruett and Kennedy, Burkhamer welcomes back
five more players including Canty (6.5 points per game last
season), Carrier (4.5 points), Tabasevic (3.5 points), Mitchell and
Waterworth.
“Canty is a guy who just brings intensity every day,” Burkhamer
said of the 6-3 wing. “He is our most vocal leader. Darion does
not have great size, but he seems to be able to play in our league
because of his activity.”
Carrier and Tabasevic, along with Elder, are Lander’s tallest
players at 6-8.
“Carrier has gotten bigger and stronger,” Burkhamer said. “He
had a great summer and is continuing to improve skillwise.
“Tabasevic has gotten bigger and stronger over the summer,”
Burkhamer said of the versatile wing-forward. “We need him
to be a guy who can play the three or four and stretch defenses
because of the way he shoots the ball.”
Mitchell and Waterworth received valuable playing time last
season.
“Mitchell got bigger and stronger, and will be able to really
help us at the point,” Burkhamer said. “Cody Waterworth lost
about 20 pounds over the summer. He is moving and shooting a
lot better. He has improved his game.”
The newcomers bring plenty of promise to Lander, including
the 6-foot Wright who played 31 games as a freshman at Division
I Long Island University before transferring to Broward Community
College in Florida. He averaged 15 points and 5.2 assists per
game while making the All-Conference team at Broward.
Powell is a 6-foot wing who led all Alabama junior colleges
in scoring in the 2009-2010 season with 20.4 points per game at
Northwest-Shoals Community College. He sat out last season.
Rumph played one season at Allen County Junior College,
one at Gannon University and one at Palm Beach Community
College. At Allen County, the 6-6 Rumph was named to the
All-Jayhawk Conference team after averaging nine points, eight
rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game.
Joining Rumph in the post is Elder, who played at Marianapolis
Prep School in Connecticut last year where he averaged 8.5
points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Prior to Marianapolis, Elder
played for the Western Australia State team and competed in the
Under 16 and Under 18 Australian National Championships.
Lowe returns to his hometown after spending two years at
Spartanburg Methodist College, where he averaged 3.0 points
and 1.5 rebounds per game last season. He scored a career-high
24 points against Mississippi Elite.
The regular season schedule features a road game at rival Erskine
College, and games against Young Harris College (home and
away), Lenoir-Rhyne, Allen, Southern Wesleyan, and the College
of Coastal Georgia, in addition to a tough PBC slate. The first
Peach Belt game is Nov. 30 at Francis Marion.
Program Goals and Objectives
• To graduate 100 percent of our student-athletes.
• To win the PBC regular season and PBC tournament championships and compete in NCAA postseason play.
• To have the most productive recruiting class in the region and conference.
• To instill life skills in our student-athletes.
• To prepare our athletes academically, athletically and socially for life after graduation/basketball.
The Bearcats’ Game Plan
The Lander University men's basketball program has entered a new era under the leadership of Coach Jeff
Burkhamer. “We are looking for fine young men with the desire, work ethic and ability to move our program to
national prominence in NCAA basketball in years ahead.”
Tough man-to-man pressure defense and an up-tempo, fast-breaking-style offense will characterize the Bearcats
style of play in 2011-12. Burkhamer adds, “Our success will depend on how quickly our players adjust to our
system of play and their ability to come together as a close-knit team.”
We will build a successful program at Lander with good people. We have high expectations of our players as
students, as role models in public and as competitors on the court. Our goals are higher than 10 feet!”
Burkhamer enters third year as Bearcat coach
Jeff Burkhamer became only the fourth head men's
basketball coach in Lander history when he was hired on
March 26, 2009.
Burkhamer enters his third season as
the LU head coach. During his first
two seasons at Lander, Burkhamer
laid the groundwork for building
future Bearcat success. The 2009-10
team was ladened with seven seniors
who Burkhamer replaced in 2011-
11 with eight freshmen and sophomores.
The Bearcats have had some
impressive wins during the past two
Jeff Burkhamer
seasons and numerous close losses.
The foundation for success is now set with seven returning
players.
Prior to coming to Lander, Burkhamer led PBC rival
Armstrong Atlantic to a 134-73 record, including a 23-7
mark in 2008-09. His overall 13-year head coaching
record is 310-148, a .676 winning percentage. Burkhamer
led AASU to the NCAA tournament four times in seven
seasons.
Prior to coaching at AASU, Burkhamer was the associate
head coach at NCAA Division I Marshall University,
helping guide the Thundering Herd to a 70-44 record in the
Mid-American Conference.
He was the head coach at Santa Fe Community College
(1994-98) in Gainesville, Fla., where he led the Saints to
two Mid-Florida Conference titles. He earned National
Junior College Coach of the Year honors by College
Sport Magazine in 1995-96 as the Saints set a school-record
28 wins, including 21 straight to start the season. In four
seasons, the Saints went 97-31 under Burkhamer.
He was the assistant coach for the Grand Rapids Hoops
of the CBA, the developmental league of the NBA from
1991-94, winning three conference titles and coaching in
the CBA finals one year.
At North Greenville College (1989-91), Burkhamer
posted an overall 58-10 record in two seasons and twice
earned NJCAA Region 10 Coach of the Year, while leading
the Mounties to back-to-back top 12 finishes and national
tournament berths.
He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at
Winthrop University (1984-85), then moved to Charleston
Southern (1985-87) and Morehead State (1987-89).
Burkhamer earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984 and his
master’s degree from Morehead
State in 1989. He was a fouryear
letterman for the Battlers
in basketball and baseball and
holds the school’s all-time assist
mark with 646. He was inducted
into the Battler Hall of Fame in
2001. He was honored by the
Parkersburg News and Sentinel in
2004 as a member of their Silver
2006 Atlanta Tip-Off Club Anniversary team, which included
Naismith Awards Georgia the top high school players for the
Collegiate Coach of the Year. past 25 years in the Parkersburg,
W.V., area.
Burkhamer and his wife, Diane, have two daughters, Melissa,
a Lander junior, and Lindsey, a sophomore at Greenwood High
School.
What were the most important factors in your decision to become
the head basketball coach at Lander?
The people, the support and the caring that goes into having
a successful program. I felt that our president, Dr. Ball, and our
athletic director, Jeff May, were the type of people that I wanted
to work for and their vision for Lander basketball was similar
to mine. I also felt they would support our quest for success and
would care about our program. There is a sincere desire to win at
Lander and to do things in a first-class manner. Our scholarship
packages, our all-you-can-eat cafeteria, our on-campus life in
the dorms, a beautiful arena, and a caring faculty and staff who
are willing to work with the student-athletes made my decision
easy. Plus, Greenwood is a great place to live and raise a family.
I have been so impressed with the number of people who have
welcomed me and our family and who have offered assistance
in so many different ways. Lander and Greenwood must be a
great place to be because so many people go to school here and
then stay in the Greenwood community to live, work and raise a
family.
Why is Lander University such a special place to go to college
and to play basketball?
The people at Lander and in the Greenwood community are
friendly, supportive and caring. Academically, our players know
their professors and the professors know our players. Our players
can get one-on-one help and hands-on experience in state-ofthe-art
classroom settings at Lander. We have an outstanding
academic support system that is geared toward success in the
classroom. A college diploma is a valuable tool and you will be
marketable in the work world upon completion of your degree.
Lander is also a terrific place to play basketball because of the
philosophy of our basketball program. We want good people,
individuals who will work to get their degrees, and players who
will compete on the basketball court. We want the “total package”
at Lander and we want to give you more than just basketball.
Our goals are higher than 10 feet! We have all of the things
Coach Jeff Burkhamer
that a student-athlete needs to be successful at Lander.
What are some of the key ingredients in building and sustaining
a successful basketball program?
There are a number of factors that go into building and sustaining
a successful basketball program. I believe you must have the
support of the administration and they must feel that athletics are
an integral part of the campus community. Next, I think you must
have tremendous people around you – assistant coaches, managers
and trainers, as well as other support personnel. But, the
most important group is PLAYERS! You must have good players
to have a chance to be a good team. We must do a great job of
recruiting players who can compete in the Peach Belt Conference
and at the NCAA Division II national level. We want good people
who are responsible off the court and in the classroom. On the
court, we will recruit players who have basketball skills, work
ethic and toughness, and a love, passion and desire for competition.
What They’re Saying About Coach Burkhamer. . .
“I have known Jeff Burkhamer for a long time. He gets the very
best out of his players. He has an outstanding work ethic, is a
great communicator and is a terrific teacher of the game. Jeff
Burkhamer will have Lander competing for PBC titles.”
--Tubby Smith, University of Minnesota Head Basketball Coach
“Coach Burkhamer was instrumental in my development as a
player. His attention to detail in my individual workouts helped
raise my skill level to new heights each year. Coach B. pushed
me every day to become a better player, a better student and a
better person. He helped prepare me for life in the NBA.”
--Pro Player Tamar Slay, Former Player
“Coach Burkhamer will create a winner at Lander. He will recruit
good players and good people and will instill a winning attitude
into his program. He will inspire and demand that players give
100 percent on and off the court. Coach B. will prepare his players
for the “Game of Life.” He made me a better player and a
better person and I am proud to have played for him.”
--William Kane, Former Player
“I played for Coach B. and worked as an assistant coach for him
for many years. He is going to get the best out of his players – on
and off the court. He creates a standard of excellence and challenges
each player to set high goals on the court and in life. He
is an excellent teacher of the game and is a very good person.
Lander is fortunate to have him leading their program back to the
top of the PBC.”
Steve Franklin, Former Assistant Coach/Player
“Coach Burkhamer is an excellent communicator and basketball
strategist. He coached me during the most productive phase of
my career. Coach Burkhamer is not only a former coach, but
someone who I’m proud to call a FRIEND.”
Steve Roberts, Assistant Coach
Steve Roberts, who is no stranger
to the Lander basketball program,
returns for his 11th year as an
assistant coach.
A four-year letterman (1980-84),
he graduated from Lander in 1984
with a bachelor’s degree in health
and physical education. While playing
for Lander University, the then-
Senators averaged 19 wins a season.
Roberts is currently third in most
games played in a career at Lander
Steve Roberts
with 125 games.
Roberts, who was recently named the Lakelands FCA Coach
of the Year, is beginning his 26th year of coaching at the collegiate
level. He started his career as a fellow graduate assistant
with Jeff Burkhamer at Winthrop University under Neild Gordon.
Roberts coached at North Greenville College for one season
before joining the staff at then-USC Spartanburg. In 1990-91, the
Rifles advanced to the NAIA National Tournament and finished
fifth in the country with a record of 29-3. The following season,
1991-92, Roberts helped lead the Rifles to the inaugural Peach
Belt Championship, a berth to the NCAA Tournament and a No.
7 final national ranking. After four seasons at USCS, Roberts
worked as an LU assistant for his former coach, Finis Horne.
Since 1994, Roberts has had the opportunity to be an assistant
coach at Mars Hill College, Coastal Carolina University and
Campbell University before returning to Mars Hill in 1999 as the
head coach. After three seasons at Mars Hill, Roberts returned to
Lander as an assistant for Coach Chipper Bagwell. Roberts has
the distinction of being the only person to work for all four head
coaches in the history of the men’s basketball program at Lander.
Lander assistant coach Steve Roberts with wife Dana and sons Luke
(left) and Matthew.
“I am thankful to be a part of Lander athletics and it’s basketball
program,” said Roberts. “Being associated with Lander for
30-plus years, I see it as an opportunity for me and my family to
be at a place that has good people, a good basketball tradition and
excellent community support.”
Roberts credits Coach Horne and his former high school coach,
Harvey Tankersley, as his biggest influences in his career.
“Both of these coaches passed on to me a great deal of knowledge
of the game, but also stressed the importance of an education,”
said Roberts.
The Greenville native is married to the former Dana Lam of
Waynesboro, Va., and they have two children, Matthew, 16, and
Luke, 14.
Dwight enters his first year at Lander after transferring from Armstrong Atlantic
State University. While not playing for the past two seasons, he led the
Pirates to a 23-7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2008-09. That year
he averaged 15.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent
from the field (including 42 percent from the three-point line) and 73
percent from the free throw line.
A first-team All-Peach Belt selection, Tolbert scored in double figures in
22 games and was a PBC Player of the Week.
Burkhamer on Tolbert: “Dwight Tolbert is a difference-maker in the
Peach Belt Conference and will be one of the best players in the league.
He has not played in two years, but will bring a tremendous hunger to
the gym and will work to get better everyday. He will make others around
him work harder and will push them to get better. He is a leader and a warrior.
Dwight can do it all on the offensive end of the floor. He runs the floor,
scores in the post, shoots the three, and can put the ball on the floor and get
to the rim. He gives us great flexibility since he can play on the perimeter
against post players or post up smaller wings.”
or for others. His athleticism should allow him
to be a lock down defender on the perimeter and
his wing span should cause problems for opposing
guards. He loves to play and will continue to improve
how we want to play. He can score in
the post, is an excellent jump shooter,
and can put the ball on the floor and
get to the basket from the perimeter.
The thing I like most about Stefan is
his ability to run the floor. His quickness
from the post position will allow
him to get to rebounds and loose
balls and may create some match-up
problems for our opponents.”
Now entering its 22nd year of existence in 2011-12, the Peach
Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences
in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach
Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which
continues to this day with 30 national championships and 25
national finalists.
Starting with only two championships in
1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the
conference has expanded to 13 championship
sports with the addition of women’s golf in the
fall of 2009.
The conference traces its roots back to November
of 1988 when 11 schools first met in
David Brunk
Greenville, S.C., to form a Division II conference.
Following a second meeting on Dec. 3,
1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach
Belt and began play in fall 1990.
The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a
national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the
honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf
championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander
men's tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight
straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA
men's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06
while AASU women's tennis has captured five titles overall.
The 2008-09 season was among the PBC’s most memorable.
The Armstrong Atlantic men’s and women’s tennis teams both
won their respective national
championships – for the
second year in a row; a feat
only done once before in
college tennis. In addition,
the Augusta State men’s
basketball team became the
first conference program to
make back-to-back trips to
the NCAA Elite Eight, Armstrong
Atlantic became the
first PBC volleyball team
ever to advance to the Elite
Eight and the North Georgia
softball team was ranked
No. 1 in the nation and
reached the World Series.
The seven charter members
of the conference were
Armstrong Atlantic State
University, Columbus State
University, Francis Marion
University, Georgia College
& State University, Lander
University, USC Aiken and
USC Upstate. The name
Peach Belt Athletic Conference
was adopted in January
of 1990 and modified to
Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke
became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were
followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton
State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North
Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida
departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the
same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia
College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern
State University in 2006.
In 2009-10, the Peach Belt grew once again with the addition
of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giving the
PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addition
of the two schools returedns
the PBC to the state of
Florida and expanded the
league into Alabama for the
first time.
David Brunk was named
the second PBC commissioner
in May of 2007.
Brunk replaced Marvin
PBC commissioner from
1991 to 2007.
About Lander
HISTORY
Lander University was founded by Methodist clergyman
Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston,
S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In
1898, the College gained support of the South Carolina Conference
of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the
College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed
Lander College in honor of its founder.
In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy
of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support
of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The
Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the
College from the Church.
In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name
and property from the Methodist Conference. The South Carolina
General Assembly created the Greenwood County Education
Commission, known as The Lander Foundation, to serve as the
board of control for the College. Lander thus became the only
four-year liberal arts college in the United States to be controlled
and financed by a county government.
On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the
Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina making
Lander a state-supported college. The State College Board of
Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston and Francis
Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander
was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.
On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution
became Lander University.
Lander was founded as a college for women. Men were admitted
in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational.
Lander University subscribes to a policy of equal educational
and employment opportunity for all.
swimming areas, campsites, a variety of restaurants and the
Greenwood State Park. For sports enthusiasts, there are many
beautifully manicured golf courses in the area as well as Lander’s
Joe Chandler Physical Education and Exercise Studies Center,
the YMCA and the Greenwood Civic Center.
The Greenwood Museum has a variety of exhibits and has
twice been recognized as the S.C. Tourist Attraction of the Year
in its category. Lander’s Monsanto Gallery receives over 500 visitors
monthly to view exhibits of Southeastern artists. The Greenwood
Community Theatre offers plays and musicals throughout
the year, including children’s theatre. And the Greenwood-Lander
Performing Arts sponsors an annual series of concerts and events
that brings international music, dance and theatre to Lander’s
Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center stage.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Lander University has over 60 organizations and clubs, each
offering students different opportunities. The choices, challenges
and opportunities students face by participating in these organizations
will assist them in classes and will allow them to meet new
friends and socialize with old friends. There are many different
areas to choose from, such as academic organizations, clubs
and interest groups, media organizations, club sports, honorary
societies, religious organizations, and Greek fraternities and
sororities.
Greenwood - The Emerald City
with a population of 23,222 and a county population exceeding
67,500. It is located near the Piedmont Plateau in western
South Carolina. Greenwood is three to four hours west of the
beautiful South Carolina beaches and two to four hours southeast
of the popular Blue Ridge Mountains.
of the outdoors! At Lake Greenwood, you’ll find public
boat landings, bait and tackle shops, fishing piers, picnic and
Residence Life
Lander’s residence halls offer an ideal living environment for
student’s right on campus. Besides the convenience of living
close, residence life allows students to encounter a full college
experience. Meeting new friends, living away from home and no
monthly bills are just a few advantages to residence life. Lander’s
campus is also safe, friendly and convenient with parking areas
outside each residence hall.
Lander’s Campus Life
Safety
Lander University provides a 24-hour certified police force
to enforce federal, state, and local laws and university rules and
regulations. They also administer the university vehicle registration
and parking policies and offer educational and crime prevention
programs for students, faculty and staff.
The Academic Success Center (ASC) houses the tutoring labs
for the university and coordinates several programs aimed at improving
student success: the Student Academic Success Program
(SASP), the SPRINT summer program, the Academic Success
Center Advisement Program (ASCAP), Freshman Mentoring
Program and the Early Alert program.
appointment or on a walk-in basis for students.
THE ’CATS PROGRAM
The ’CATS Program (Care About The Student-Athlete) at
Lander University is a program designed to further educate
our basketball players on the “Game of Life.” It is designed to
help our players gain a better understanding of the vital areas of
development in the maturation of the individual. The program
guides a person through the necessary planning for life after
college in topic areas that might not be covered in a lecture hall.
This program is set up to further enhance our players’ knowledge
concerning areas that will be dealt with during and after
college. We feel it prepares our athletes for “Total Success,”
whether it be on the basketball court, in the classroom or in the
business world. The ’CATS Program is an attempt to develop all
facets of a young person’s potential.
Guest speakers talk with our players about a variety of topics,
including:
• Study Guidelines
• Drug and Alcohol Awareness
• Time Management
• Goal Setting
• Public Speaking
Horne Arena - Home of the Bearcats
The Lander men’s basketball team has the benefit of playing in one of the nicest basketball facilities in the
country. Horne Arena, named after the program founder Finis Horne, is home to Bearcats basketball and volleyball,
graduations, and many campus and community events. The 2,500 chairback seats provide a comfortable
environment to enjoy events. Horne Arena, which opened in 1992, includes coaches’ offices, meeting rooms,
training room facilities and locker room facilities. A new scoreboard in the middle of the arena was added in
2011.
The Bearcats basketball locker room is “big time.” Bearcat players enjoy pro-style lockers that include head
shots and action pictures, nameplates and individual goal sheets. Motivational signs and action photos line the
walls, and a new video projector and screen have been added for video breakdowns. Players slap the “Bearcat
Paw” each time they leave the locker room, signifying their commitment to playing hard and playing together.
