Today's date is July 23,1974; it's approxt.ately 11:10 p.m.; also in the room is Trooper Larry Harju. The reason for this interview is for the purposes to be used tor the Oral Histo Class at Suomi College. We'd like tonight to interTiew John Sul Ivan. John L. Sullivan has been a Police Chief in the Village ot Calum t, was born and raised in Calumet and knows the area quite well. J ho, we'd like to have a little background first about you, where you were born and your parents, etc. R: I was born in Calumet, Michigan, on Eighth Street right in the Vtllage Limits the 800 and Line I which was brought runs just up there a block along from the where railroad, we lived. the tracks And 0 ~of the Nineth Street in our area there, there used to be three cat hous s OD Nineth Street and two cat houses OD Maple Lane and one cat house on Foreman Street. When I was a youngster about eight - nine years old, I used to work around these cat houses. I: When was this, John? I don't mean to interrupt you, but what years? R: That was about 1922 and '23. Used to work around these cat hOUS~S doing little errand8 for the women who used to run thes.. Of co rse them days, I didn't think they w.re cat houses...I didn't know wat and they that. were. I And remember I did when a lot I of was errands a youngster for them, that running I was always to the ~ ~ore ing to the drug store and they'd give me a note and I'd look at the ote and I thought "Kodak, why man, they must be takiD! a lot ot Pic ~ure8' I'm always going up there for Kodak" and they'd give me a big bo and I'd give 'em the money and I'd go back and the girls would m et me at the door and they'd say, "Thank you, lover boyft. Some wer ~ colored, some were Chine.., some were Japanese, all difterent na ionalities,'8" there. And then when I got a little older I starte thinking, ~an, what'd they do with these Kodak's all the time b~tore". Then one day I said to my mother, I says, "Ma, they're sending.e up to the drugstore tor Kodaks all the time," I said, WWhat are they, doing, takin' pictures over there all the time, is that a photog~pher shop?" And she said, "No...no, that's okay, as long as they giv. you
