CQ-ROLL CALL
Decision 2012
Former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, the Democratic Senate candidate, makes his acceptance speech Tuesday night.
Kaine Clinches Victory
Democrat defeats
Allen in battle for
Virginia Senate seat
U.S. SENATE
Tim Kaine (D) 51.5%
George Allen (R) 48.3%
2,470 OF 2,588 PRECINCTS REPORTING
Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine
eked out a victory over Republican
George Allen on Tuesday
night, the climax of an intensely
watched matchup that cost more
than $80 million.
The race for the seat held by
retiring Sen. Jim Webb, D, has been
neck and neck all along, confi rming
Virginia’s battleground status. For
the past decade, Republicans and
Democrats have traded control of
the governor’s mansion, the General
Assembly and U.S. Senate seats.
The balloting marked the end
of a marathon race between two
widely known, personally popular
former governors with national
profi les who made sharply different
bets about what would resonate
in Virginia.
Once reliably Republican, the
commonwealth has become much
more competitive because of its
changing population, particularly
in fast-growing Northern Virginia.
Its evolving demographics helped
Barack Obama carry the state in
2008, the fi rst Democratic presidential
candidate to do so in 44 years.
“It says yet again that Virginia is
a competitive, two-party state,” said
Mark Rozell, a public policy professor
at George Mason University.
“Kaine ran as a
centrist ... That has
been the formula
for success for
Democratic
candidates.”
— MARK ROZELL, PUBLIC POLICY PRO-
FESSOR AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY
The Kaine victory is a vindication
of the moderate, bridge-building
brand of politics touted by both
him and Sen. Mark Warner, D, the
man Kaine succeeded in the governor’s
mansion.
Kaine repeatedly touted his
willingness to strike compromises
and work with both parties, particularly
on averting looming defense
cuts that would disproportionately
affect Virginia. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Amendment Limits
Ability to Seize Property
Voters approved a constitutional
amendment to limit eminent domain,
the government’s ability to take private
property for economic development.
Virginia’s legislature outlawed the
practice in 2007, leading opponents to
say the amendment is not needed. (AP)
To Win Re-Election in House
Democratic Rep.
Jim Moran, left,
fended off Republican
challenger
Patrick Murray
to maintain his
stranglehold on the
8th-District seat. This will be his 12th
term. Moran was one of the 11 incumbents
to win re-election. Among
the other winners was House majority
leader Eric Cantor, who defeated
Democrat Wayne Powell in the 7th
District, which includes the Richmond
area. (AP)
