Southwoods Takes to the Stage in Summer 2011
It’s hard to believe camp is just around the corner! We couldn’t
be more excited to unpack our SW gear into our cabins once
again, and then unpack your gear into your cabins! The
countdown is definitely on - first session is only 40 days away,
and second session starts in just 68 days. There’s no doubt this
summer will bring some excellent adventures and plenty of
surprises. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing tribal
colors and cheering for your team at tug, doing some last
minute practice for Airband, and warming up your voice
for play tryouts!
Speaking of plays, the Southwoods Playhouse is going to be
rockin’ with some classic productions this summer! Lower
Camp will be performing Free
to Be You and Me, and
IN THIS EDITION Upper Camp will take on Little
of the play is a long time camp mantra - be yourself and you can achieve
anything!
Little Shop of Horrors is the story of a struggling flower shop that gains
popularity when the florist grows a Venus Fly Trap that eats blood instead of
plant food! Excitement and drama ensue as the florist must
balance love, work, and a carnivorous plant!
We’re all in for a treat this summer, so warm up those vocal
Hello Southwoods
A Note From Andrea & Scott
We always start to get excited this time of year, but the energy and excitement around the winter office has grown 100% since the
flood of forms began to come in. It’s easy to get excited as we look at pictures and read the great information you’ve provided us
with on your camper and parent information sheets. We smile as we read all of the activities our campers are looking forward to
perfecting, or trying for the first time this summer. We smile partially because we can’t wait to help them achieve these goals, but
also because we know that our elective schedule gives them the opportunity to do so. We provide campers with the time and
guidance they need to try everything we offer, if they choose to do so!
While we love knowing what our campers are excited about, we also love to know any information that our parents feel will help
us facilitate a great summer for their children. Coming to camp not knowing anyone, or never having water skied, or worried
about liking anything we serve for dinner - all of these concerns are very normal! Even our returning campers can have some
doubts leading up to arrival day (We call it the “Sophomore Blues” when a child anxiously remembers something that was tough
for them last year). We are here to guide both you and your child through their Southwoods experience this summer, so we
thought we would share some ideas that might be helpful for both of you.
First, make sure you are confirming to your child that you know you have chosen a safe, fun place for them to go to camp. You
selected Southwoods because you know they will have a fantastic time, and because we offer all the things they are looking
forward to doing. Also share that you have spoken with us, and that Andrea and I, and all the Southwoods Staff will take great
care in making sure they have a fun and safe summer. If they are returning campers, remind them how they felt on Parents’ Day
last year, as they showed you around camp and introduced you to all their friends and our staff. Your calm and assured words that
they are going to have a great time, and that we can handle anything that comes up, send a clear message to them that you are
committed to this experience.
Watch the camp video with them again. Go online and check out the website, pointing out all the things that you know they are
going to love to do once they get to camp. If your child expresses concern about not knowing anyone at camp, remind him/her
that making new friends is one of the best things about the summer camp experience. Many of our new campers are coming
alone and do not know anyone yet, and just like your child, everyone coming to Southwoods this summer - new or returning - has
a desire to make new friends. Be sure to express your confidence in your child’s ability to do this, as well as our ability to help
them do this. You can also explain that our bus leaders begin facilitating these new friendships the minute the bus pulls out of the
parking lot, and we don’t stop helping them make friends until they leave at the end of the summer. Again, telling your child
about your partnership with us, and your confidence in our skill and ability to help your child with each of these steps is very
important in setting the stage for a positive start.
Some campers, even after getting all of this advice, may still be nervous until they get to camp and truly see that they can do it.
The end of the summer brings many proud moments when campers realize that even though they may have missed home, they
made it through the summer and they actually had fun! In order for that to happen, though, campers must come to camp
knowing that it is your expectation that they complete the summer and have a fantastic time. Please don’t make promises about
picking them up early, or speaking with them every day. Campers that have heard these “promises” tend not to make the same
effort to have fun, get to know other campers, and participate. Your
positive encouragement and unwavering confidence that they will succeed
really help campers come to camp believing that they will be fine.
Once your child is at camp, send letters, emails, or faxes. While it is
important to share what you are doing, try not to emphasize activities that
will make your child feel that they are “missing out” on some special family
fun. Please feel free to send pictures, newspaper clippings, or funny things
you think they will enjoy. This connection to home is sometimes all a child
needs to feel better. Remember, big gift packages are not what they need.
These do not make a child feel better - what they do is make others feel
bad!
Lastly, it is also possible that a child who you expected to be very homesick
may not experience any of these feelings at all. They still love you! Rest
assured that you have made a wonderful decision to send your child to
Southwoods. We look forward to seeing you on Parents’ Day.
Our Mission Statement...
Deep Thoughts
by Jessica Strasser
It’s still strange to me that summer starts
in May now. The day after I finished my
final exams, I went straight home, and
the summer had started. It’s going to be
an exciting summer; I’m glad to see my
friends from high school and eat home-cooked meals again. But
I’m most excited to start working at Southwoods, five years after
my last year as a camper.
I went to Southwoods as a camper for five years, from
Upper Junior to Upper Senior. I remember being so nervous that
first night, but slowly, I threw myself headfirst into camp life. I
would try things that I’d never had the chance to experience; I
remember frog catching above the soccer field and sorting out
CDs to play during Radio. I fell in love with a lot of the activities
I did while at Southwoods. For example, I learned how to knit
during a week-long elective; my needles are with me all the time,
and I’m still working away at various scarves in different designs. I
also developed my love of Theater at Southwoods, getting the
opportunity to be in incredible productions and even playing a
dream role (Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls”). I met some of my
best friends at Southwoods, and those months in the Adirondacks
were always anticipated well before they occurred.
I knew that I wanted to be a counselor at Southwoods
as soon as I was old enough. I looked up to many of the
counselors I met throughout the years; they were always so
selfless, helping my fellow campers and myself out with whatever
we needed. I always dreaded saying goodbye to my counselors,
and I feel as though I learned something about myself through
every counselor that I met during my camp years. I went with my
parents last year to pick up my brothers at camp (they’re current
campers) and I was struck by how much I missed camp. I had so
many good memories stored up, and physically going back was
something I had needed to do for a very long time. I am pumped
to finally be a counselor! I keep thinking about driving up,
meeting my fellow staff members and the campers, and all of the
amazing adventures in store, and it’s such a thrill. This is
something I’ve wanted to do since my first year at Southwoods,
and I’m finally living out my dream!
The Anderson girls are bringing their A-Game this spring!
Lindsay is playing lacrosse, and is on the varsity crew team at
her school and having a blast. Ally is not only playing lacrosse
for her school but is swimming for the Makos YMCA of Western Connecticut. Show ‘em how it’s done!
Porter Burns (right) has had a very full year! He’s been involved in both cross country and track and field
teams at school, and manages to squeeze in some weekend skiing. Porter traveled to the windy city of
Chicago over Thanksgiving break. He flew to Chicago with his family and then took the Amtrak train across
country to San Francisco. He spent two full days on the train, sightseeing and enjoying the view from the
train, and he went to San Antonio to the Riverwalk and visited the Alamo. Quite the experienced traveller!
We can’t wait to hear the details!
Page 5
The Isvy’s are jet-setting all over the world this spring! Jordan spent a week in Portugal with his soccer team to train and
play some matches. Camille, who is studying at UCL in London, spent some quality time with friends at University of
Pennsylvania for Spring Fling! Happy travels, guys!
Erica, Max, and Sasha Beinhacker (left) spent February vacation skiing the Haute-Savoie Mountains in
France. Max learned to snowboard, and Erica and Sasha worked on their ski skills. We hope we get to see
you show off at our next Winter Weekend, guys!
SW alum and Arts and Crafts director Robin Miller sends regards from Rome, Florence, and
Greece! She is winding up her spring vacation from Cork University (Ireland) in London just in
time for the Royal Wedding! Hip Hip Cheerio!
Ethan Ruoff (above)
earned his first
degree black belt
this March! Maybe
we’ll get a sneak
peak at the Talent
Show this summer!
Ethan Ehrenberg had a great spring break
in London and road tripping in Spain! He
met up with Nolan and Brandon Young in
London and the boys rode the London Eye
together (right) after a enjoying roast
beef, yorkshire pudding, and treacle
tart! Once home, Ethan and Nolan got
back to their usual activities, as a great
pitching-catching battery for their
baseball team, the Greenwich Village
Little League Majors Division Mariners!
James Prestopino recently performed in his high school production of
Beauty and the Beast as a hat seller, and a shrimp cocktail! We will
definitely miss you in the SW Play house this summer while youre on
your Super Senior trip, James!
Mazel tov to Dani Sotland,
who recently celebrated her
bat mitzvah with some
Southwoods friends by her side
(above)!
Daniel Peterson is tearing it up on the tennis court at Great Neck Middle School, where he plays on the school team.
Keep serving aces, Daniel - the Southwoods Tennis Tournament is coming up sooner than you think!
Tara Shenker's All-Star Cheerleading team,
the Jersey All-Stars, are on fire this year
with back-to-back wins at All-Star
Challenge National Competition as Junior
Level 2 Super Division Champs, and US
Finals Junior Level 2 East Division Champs
in Virginia Beach (left).
Congratulations to Sydney Barest, who passed her pre-preliminary figure skating tests in
January, and performed a solo skating program in an exhibition show in March (right)! Sydney
also co-starred in a local production of The Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow.
In January, Zoe Winston participated in the Robbins Lane Winter Band and Chorus
Concerts. This is her first year playing the clarinet and she was asked to join the 5 th
grade band (right)! Zoe and her family visited Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, NJ. We hope
you told Buddy we say hello!
Congrats to Jake Fox! Jake plays left wing on his Bantam Travel Hockey
Team, and with his help, the team made the playoffs where they emerged as the
Champions in the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (left)!
Sean Heller was delighted to be invited to participate on his high
school tennis team, as a 7th grader! Keep up the good work, Sean!
Alex Greene recently won the opportunity to have a photograph she took
exhibited in a juried show at the Fairfield Museum and History Center. She
also participated in a community service trip to Ecuador where she had an
opportunity to help local families in need (right).

that watermelon is actually a vegetable? It is from the botanical family
Cucurbitaceae and is most closely related to cucumbers, pumpkins and
squash. The watermelon is composed of 92% water and early explorers
often used hollowed out watermelons as canteens.
Hohman’s Happenings
Hey Southwoods!!
Can you believe how quickly the winter months went by? Summer is almost here!!! In the
midst of talking to staff and planning exciting special events and activities for this summer,
I catch myself daydreaming about kayaking, Rainbow Warriors, the zip line, Panic, Costume
Ball, Carnival and just being in the Adirondacks. There’s SO MUCH to look forward to!
To help express my excitement for the summer, I have created a PROGRAM acrostic below…
Probably going to have more fun than you ever thought possible!
Ridiculously fun electives like: water ski, rocketry, woodworking, tennis, and photography.
Ongoing Tribal competition (hope you are practicing your Tribal cheers ahead of time!)
Great friendships will be created!
Really good chance you will see Jordan Fretchman’s Tom Cruise impression.
A reasonable amount of chipwiches will be consumed this summer!
Memories will be made that will last a lifetime!
Southwoods 2011 is going to be incredible! I cannot wait to see all of your smiling faces come off the bus
on arrival day. Just a couple weeks away…see you soon!!
Things I Learned at Camp
I went to camp pretty much on my own. My brother was with me, but once he realized he
could pull off a decent British accent, and I wasn’t going to play along, he more or less
disowned me, and I didn’t particularly mind. We went about our friend-making and
adventure-having, and we waved hello across the bunkline when it was convenient. We
exchanged the occasional “Have you gotten a package yet?” or “Do you have enough
blankets?” - typical big sister, little brother stuff - and we managed to have what we felt were pretty
independent experiences.
After that first Parents’ Day, we loaded into the car (decked out in a fabulous family set of rain ponchos). We
looked at each other across the back seat, and realized that we had the exact same concern: What are we
going to do for the next 11 months until we can come back to camp?
For the first time in four weeks, we had just become the only people in each others’ immediately accessible
lives who could even begin to understand what it felt like to be nominated for a fuzzy. For all six hours of our
drive home to Philadelphia, we regaled our parents with a never ending list of mutual memories - people, and
places, and songs from the summer that we’d never even known we had in common.
What we both learned that summer was the value of a shared experience. At camp, we took for granted that
everyone offhandedly knew terms like “airband” and “free play”. In fact, it often felt like there was a general
understanding of everything at Southwoods. When we got home, we quickly realized how difficult it was going
to be to explain camp to our school friends, and we also realized that that was ok. It made our camp friends
even more important to us, and they still are! Even as a staff member, as I continue to make new camp friends,
my old bunkmates are still - and will always be - the only ones who “Remember when...”.
The Healthy Way
Pizza Roll-ups
Ingredients:
1 (8-inch) whole-wheat flour tortilla
2 tablespoons prepared pizza sauce (or make your own!)
12 baby spinach leaves
3 tablespoons shredded part-skim mozzarella
Feel free to include any other vegetables or flavors your
family likes!
Picnic season is here at last, and this healthy lunch
idea is a fun do-it-yourself addition to any outing!
Make it with the kids, and let them come up with
creative side dishes to complete the meal.
Instructions:
Place tortilla on a plate and spread pizza sauce over it.
Top with an even layer of spinach and sprinkle cheese on
top. Microwave on high for about 45 seconds, until the
cheese is melted. Carefully roll the tortilla up, and let
cool for 10 minutes before slicing into pieces.
Southwoods Unplugged
Make some time to turn off the TV this spring, and practice
Plant Pals{ }
gardening and crafting all at once!
Materials (makes 1 Plant Pal):
• One 9 or 12 oz plastic cup
• 1 - 1 1/4 cups of potting soil
•1 tablespoon of grass seeds
TIP: To speed germination, soak the seeds
in water overnight before planting!
• Decorations (dot stickers, markers, ribbon, etc)
Instructions:
1. Fill the cup halfway with soil. Divide the remaining soil
half, then stir grass seeds into one of those halves.
2. Spoon the seed-filled soil into the cup, then top it with the
remaining soil. This top layer should be about 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Water the soil well.
3. Decorate the cup with stickers and markers. Finally, leave the plant in a warm, sunny spot to sprout.
Water as necessary to keep the soil about as wet as a damp sponge.
