In January 2009 he was sentenced to 3 years<br />
imprisonment for his alleged defam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Crown<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> 4 l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> his 2005 novel Verisimilitude.<br />
Nicolaides was convicted <strong>in</strong> January 2009, jailed <strong>and</strong>,<br />
after begg<strong>in</strong>g pardon, was deported to Australia <strong>in</strong><br />
February 2009.<br />
Jailed, begged pardon <strong>and</strong> deported.<br />
Giles Ji Ungpakorn<br />
After be<strong>in</strong>g charged for quot<strong>in</strong>g Paul H<strong>and</strong>ley’s book<br />
(above) <strong>in</strong> his own book ‘A Coup for the Rich’<br />
(2007), Giles, a Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />
Chulalonghorn University, a declared Marxist,<br />
jumped bail <strong>in</strong> February 2009, <strong>and</strong> went with his<br />
wife, who was also be<strong>in</strong>g harassed, to live <strong>in</strong> the UK.<br />
A warrant for his arrest was issued <strong>in</strong> March 2009.<br />
His book was <strong>of</strong>ficially banned at the end <strong>of</strong> 2009. In<br />
political exile, Giles <strong>and</strong> Num cont<strong>in</strong>ue to campaign<br />
for democracy <strong>in</strong> Thail<strong>and</strong>.See:<br />

In June 2009 LM charges were filed aga<strong>in</strong>st all 13 members <strong>of</strong> the FCCT Board for distribut<strong>in</strong>g a CD <strong>of</strong><br />
an FCCT discussion with Jakrapob Penkair (above). Cases pend<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul<br />
In August 2009 Daranee, 48, was arrested for publicly<br />
denounc<strong>in</strong>g the 2006 military coup, <strong>and</strong> the Monarchy,<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g a Red Shirt rally <strong>in</strong> June 2008. She is now serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an 18 year prison sentence on 3 counts <strong>of</strong> lèse majesté.<br />
Consistently mistreated, she faces deteriorat<strong>in</strong>g health<br />
<strong>and</strong> is <strong>in</strong> acute need <strong>of</strong> medical attention.<br />
Serv<strong>in</strong>g 18 years. Appeal upheld but still <strong>in</strong> jail.<br />
