Krong Ch<strong>and</strong>awong<br />
Tongphan Suthimas<br />
Public execution by fir<strong>in</strong>g squad. An MP from Sakon Nakhon Prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>and</strong> close<br />
comrade <strong>of</strong> Tieng Sirkhan from the Labour Party executed <strong>in</strong> 1952. 31 May.<br />
Public execution by fir<strong>in</strong>g squad. Krong <strong>and</strong> Tongphan, a Primary School teacher,<br />
were arrested together with 148 villagers from Phuphan charged with committ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
‘communist acts’.<br />
Krong <strong>and</strong> Tongphan were executed on the spot, the rest were imprisoned for five years. Krong’s wife <strong>and</strong> son were<br />
also arrested while his other two children fled the country.<br />
1962 1<br />
Ruam Wongphan<br />
Public execution by fir<strong>in</strong>g squad. Lead<strong>in</strong>g member <strong>of</strong> the Communist Party <strong>of</strong><br />
Thail<strong>and</strong>. He died heroically shout<strong>in</strong>g out as he was be<strong>in</strong>g shot: “US imperialism <strong>and</strong><br />
Sarit junta go to hell. Long Live the People’. 24 April.<br />
1966 1<br />
Jit Phumisak<br />
Assass<strong>in</strong>ated by police <strong>in</strong> the village at the foot <strong>of</strong> the Phupan Mounta<strong>in</strong> (5 May.)<br />
A provocative, well-known th<strong>in</strong>ker, translator, writer, poet <strong>and</strong> song-writer, whose<br />
songs are still sung <strong>and</strong> still popular.<br />
1971-1973 3 000<br />
3,000 villagers Brutally murdered by Royal Thai Army <strong>in</strong> Pattalung Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, some burnt alive <strong>in</strong><br />
drums <strong>of</strong> oil, dropped from helicopters <strong>in</strong> sacks <strong>and</strong> pushed <strong>of</strong>f the side <strong>of</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
1973 Crackdown 14-15 October 77<br />
77 people died, mostly from gunfire, mostly students, young workers <strong>and</strong> others from the work<strong>in</strong>g class. 847 were<br />
wounded.<br />
The records <strong>of</strong> this massacre are quite accurately recorded. The royalist establishment was forced to recognise these<br />
people as martyrs to the cause <strong>of</strong> democracy, <strong>and</strong> most were given ‘royal cremations’ (a funeral pyre lit by a member or<br />
