Certification Requirements 

Enneagram Institute Riso-Hudson Certification Requirements 2014 

These 2014 Certification Requirements are effective January 1, 2014. Certification 

Requirements are subject to periodic revisions in order to maintain the quality and value of 

Riso-Hudson Teacher Certification, and to facilitate students' ability to submit qualifying 

materials. Please note that we have a new requirement for students beginning the 

Training Program (i.e., taking Part I) in 2014 and beyond. (Please see 1.V. below.) 

General Requirements 

There are three steps in the Certification Process: 

1. Completion of the Training Program; 

2. Registration for the Certification Track; and 

3. Submission of Certification Materials. 

1. Training 

Those wishing to become Riso-Hudson Certified Enneagram Teachers are required to 

complete the Riso-Hudson Training Program: 

I. The Part I Training; 

II. The Part II Training; 

III. The Part III Training; 

IV. The Enneagram and the Inner Critic Workshop (Psychic Structures) or 

Deeper Into the Psychic Structures; 

‣ Note: If you took Part I before 2001, you received a short overview that 

has been developed and expanded to become the Inner Critic (Psychic 

Structures) Workshop. You will need to attend this Workshop, as the 

material has been greatly developed and improved. 

V. The Master Class: Practicum on Workshop Teaching 

‣ This Training is required for all students beginning the Training 

Program in 2014 and beyond. Students who began the Training 

Program (i.e., took Part I) before 2014 are not required to attend the 

Master Class, but are strongly encouraged to do so: Our feedback from 

Certification candidates is that this course has been invaluable in 

preparing their Certification DVD, and in their careers as Riso-Hudson 

Enneagram professionals. Non-required students who elect to take the 

Master Class may do so at a discount of $250 off of their Certification 

fee. 

Part I Requirements. Because it contains much unpublished material, Part I is always 

required regardless of the student's Enneagram background, and must be taken before 

Part II or Part III. Once a student has completed Part I, he or she may attend Part II and 

Part III in either order. The Inner Critic (Psychic Structures) Workshop can be taken at 

any time, but we strongly recommend taking the Part I Training first.

Our research and our Training materials are constantly being developed and 

enriched, so students who took Part I many years ago are at a severe disadvantage. They 

may not be able to write pertinent, qualifying essays. More importantly, we want our Riso- 

Hudson Certified Teachers to represent our current thinking and be able to offer state-ofthe-art 

knowledge and materials with their teaching and consulting. 

Thus, we encourage all students to retake Part I every three to five years in order to 

stay current with our research and development. We offer a 20% returning-student 

discount as an incentive. 

As of January 1, 2014, we require all students submitting their Certification Materials 

("Certification candidates") to complete Certification within five calendar years of 

taking Part I. 

If more than five calendar years have elapsed since taking Part I, the student will need to 

retake it and submit their Certification Materials according to the most current 

Requirements. (Returning students are eligible to retake the Part I Training at a 20% 

discount.) 

• Students with concerns about the five-year Part I requirement, or any 

other Certification matter, should feel free to e-mail Laura with the 

particulars of their situation. 

• Students who registered for Certification—i.e., paid the Certification Fee—prior 

to August 21, 2007, may submit under the guidelines they received at their 

registration time provided they complete their Certification requirements and 

submit their materials by December 31, 2014. They are strongly encouraged to 

use the current Requirements, however, particularly in regards to taking a recent 

Part I. (Certification essays and DVDs containing outdated information cannot 

receive passing grades.) 

2. Registration 

After all parts of the Training Program have been completed, students register for the 

Certification Track by paying the $700 non-refundable fee in our online shopping cart:

3. Certification Materials: Essays and Teaching DVD 

Certification candidates write and submit six take-home "open-book" essays. This 

includes two mandatory essays plus four more chosen from a selection of nine essay 

topics. Candidates also submit a 90–minute to two-hour DVD of themselves teaching 

the Enneagram in a real-world workshop setting.

Due Dates and Deadlines 

We encourage you to submit the complete Certification packet (cover sheet, six written 

essays and 90–120-minute teaching DVD) within twelve months from the day you pay the 

Certification fee. While this is not a strict time requirement, you must, in any case, complete 

your Certification within five years of your Part I Training or else retake the Part I Training 

(per the Part I Requirements in the Training section above). Certification packets are kept, 

in the order received, for the next review. 

Semi-annual Deadlines for the Certifications are June 30 and December 31. 

• If you plan to submit materials for the summer review, it is necessary to e-mail 

Laura of your intent during the month of May so we can book time to evaluate 

your materials. Then submit your complete Certification packet during the month 

of June only. 

• If you plan to submit materials for the winter review, it is necessary to e-mail 

Laura of your intent during the month of November so we can book time to 

evaluate your materials. Then submit your complete Certification packet during 

the month of December only. 

Resubmitting failed essays or teaching DVD: If an applicant does not pass Certification 

and is asked to redo all or part of their Certification requirements, he or she will need to 

pay an additional fee of $100 per new essay or DVD to be reviewed.

Requests for Extensions 

Due to the nature of the Certification process, we cannot accommodate requests for 

extensions. If you are unable to make a deadline, you can submit your materials in six 

months, during the next Certification period. 

Open Certification for Returning Students 

In the past, once students completed all parts of the Training Program, they needed to 

enroll for Certification within a certain time period or lose the opportunity. We now allow 

anyone who has completed the entire Training Program since 1995 to apply for 




Certification at any time provided they have retaken the Part I Training within five years. 

• Your own experience of living with and studying the Enneagram since you 

completed your Training may have matured your understanding and made you 

ready for Riso-Hudson Certification. 

• If so, please contact our office to get full details of current requirements. 

• It is up to you to decide if you are ready to embark on Certification—we require 

that you retake Part I only if it has been more than five (5) years since you 

completed it, as the material is constantly being developed and refined. 

• Students are eligible to retake Part I as often as desired at a 20% discount. 

Review of Certifications 

If you have an urgent and compelling professional need for the review to take place 

before the scheduled winter or summer reviews, please contact Laura and explain your 

situation. (Please understand that it is not likely that we can accommodate "off-season" 

certifications, given the amount of time necessary to devote to each student’s 

certification.) 

Revisions of Certification Requirements 

The Riso-Hudson Enneagram is a dynamic and ever-evolving system—as is the Training 

Program. As noted earlier, Certification Requirements are subject to periodic revisions in 

order to maintain the quality and value of Riso-Hudson Teacher Certification and to 

facilitate students' ability to submit qualifying materials. Thus, while submission under 

older Guidelines may be acceptable in transition periods, we encourage all our students to 

submit under the most current Requirements.
