LAIDLAW MANUSCRIPT COMPETITION – Submission Deadline: March 15 th , 2013 5pm Students shortlisted for the Laidlaw Manuscript Competition will be invited to give an oral presentation at IMS Scientific Day. The following awards are conferred for exceptional manuscripts and presentations: • Laidlaw Prize – Clinical Science • Laidlaw Prize – Basic Science • Laidlaw Prize – Honourable Mention Laidlaw Manuscript Instructions: Manuscripts for this competition must reflect work completed in the graduate program – published or in press work is eligible. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically as a PDF file in the format of a letter to “Nature: International Weekly Journal of Science”. This is the mandatory format for this competition (even if the content of the manuscript has already been published in other journals). Supplemental material is not permitted. For information on “Nature”, letter formatting, length, etc., please visit: http://www.nature.com/nature/authors/index.html If your manuscript contains multiple authors, a letter from your supervisor confirming that the majority of the work presented in the manuscript is your own must accompany the submission. ALAN WU POSTER COMPETITION – Submission Deadline: March 15 th , 2013 5 pm The Alan Wu Poster Prizes are presented to the most outstanding basic science and clinical science abstract and poster presentation. All Alan Wu poster competition participants are expected to prepare an abstract and brief poster presentation (work must have been completed within the graduate program). Further information will be announced at a later date. The following awards are conferred for exceptional posters: • Alan Wu Poster Prize – Clinical Science • Alan Wu Poster Prize – Basic Science • Alan Wu Poster Prize – Honourable Mention (1 Honourable Mention per poster group) Alan Wu Poster Competition Abstract Instructions: • 1 page (or less), single spaced, 1” margins • Arial 11 point font • Includes background, purpose, hypothesis, methods, results, conclusions • Abstract Title (in ALL capital letters), student and supervisor’s names are included at the top of the page Page 2

Please note: Community and global health, as well as medical education and bioethics, are considered in the clinical category. All abstracts will be published in the IMS Scientific Day Booklet that is distributed at Scientific Day in May. Students will be divided into clinical and basic poster groups. Judges will rank posters and abstracts and will select one student from each group to be considered for the Alan Wu Poster Prize in Basic or Clinical Science. Poster boards (3 feet high by 6 feet wide) will be provided on Scientific Day. One poster board is permitted per student. Send your Alan Wu Poster Competition abstracts in electronic (word file) format to Marika Galadza at pa.medscience@utoronto.ca by March 15 th , 2013, 5pm. Faxed & PDF copies will not be accepted. 4. THE MEL SILVERMAN MENTORSHIP AWARD – Call for Nominations The Mel Silverman Mentorship Award is presented to an IMS faculty member who has served as an outstanding mentor and role model for graduate students, and who has contributed in a significant way to the IMS graduate program. Candidates for this award must be nominated by at least two IMS students. Nominations include a detailed letter in support of the candidate, as well as a copy of the candidate’s curriculum vitae. Additional letters of support are welcome. Send your Mel Silverman Mentorship Award nominations in electronic (word file) format to Michelle Rosen at sf.medscience@utoronto.ca Deadline for submission: March 28 th , 2013 5 pm 5. ADDITIONAL IMS SCIENTIFIC DAY AWARDS SIMINOVITCH-SALTER AWARD Dr. Lou Siminovitch Dr. Robert Salter The Siminovitch-Salter Award was established in 1995 to honour the contributions of Dr. Lou Siminovitch and Dr. Robert Salter to the Institute of Medical Science. It is awarded annually to a graduating IMS PhD student who has made outstanding scholarly contributions. The endowment represents contributions by Mount Sinai Hospital, the University Of Toronto Department Of Surgery and the Institute of Medical Science. The recipient is nominated by the IMS Graduate Coordinators. Page 3
