PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This is an information packed newsletter
describing all the things your club does. We are
fortunate indeed to have such a wealth of
Dressage resources and opportunities in Ocala.
We’re also fortunate to have an active
membership. Thank you to each person who has
contributed to STRIDE.
As a group, you have donated literally hundreds
of hours of your time and energy: entering our
shows, volunteering at our shows, organizing
and running the shows, attending meetings,
speaking at our meetings, posting comments
and photos on our Facebook page, posting
classified ads, purchasing your products from our
business sponsors and advertisers, making
suggestions, etc., etc.
DID YOU KNOW?
STRIDE’s Recording Secretary, Margaret Mayer,
does a lot of traveling, whether to a horse show,
Chicago, or to Princeton, New Jersey where Mr.
Mayer works. From Ocala, she also manages a
Chicago dressage barn with 20 boarders. That’s
impressive! She says the distance makes it
easier, since she can focus on operations.
In addition to competing in STRIDE shows,
Margaret participated in the Sunshine State and
Live Oak Invitational this year. Go Margaret!
A special thank you also to each Board member
and past Board members who continue to help
and non-Board volunteers who run our
infrastructure: show secretary, newsletter editor,
webmaster, Facebook administrator, and ad
manager.
Saturday, June 23 we are holding our annual
volunteer training show at Rebel Ridge Farm in
Anthony. Charlotte Trentelman is organizing this
day as well as the next day’s (non-STRIDE) “Dog
Days T-Shirt” show, a benefit for the Humane
Society. See pages 2 and 3 for more info.
This issue of the newsletter features two “advice”
articles: summer feet (horses) and bears.
You’ll also find the minutes of the last Board
meeting and a calendar page that you can
print out and post on your refrigerator.
Hope to see you soon at one of our events!
3 rd Place at Sunshine State this spring
Her farm in Ocala houses four dressage horses
ranging in age from 13 to 32, and a growing
herd of driving ponies. Little Black is the pony
she drove in the CDE competitions. Margaret’s
barn also houses her two dogs, Andy the
Airedale and Izzie the Welsh Terrier. Pierre St.
Jacque’s horses, including Lucky Tiger also live in
her barn. Pierre is hoping to make the Olympic
team this year.
Thank you, Margaret Mayer, for your service to
DOES YOUR HORSE HAVE THE SUMMER BLUES?
By Brent Barrett, DVM
It is common for horse’s feet to fall apart in the
wet summer months. In June or July, we begin
to see an increase in chips, crumbling, flares (the
hoof wall has a bend or arc instead of being
straight from the hairline to the ground) and
loose nails or shoes. This often results in what we
view as “platter or pancake” foot. Some of
these horses will become foot sore, although
they have been comfortable previously in the
year. For the farrier, as well as the owner, this
can be a very frustrating time of year. Why does
this happen and what can we do about it?
The main problem is excess moisture absorbed
within the hoof from early morning dew,
increased humidity and common afternoon
rains. As the moisture content of the hoof
increases, the wall and sole become softer. This
causes both decreased integrity and resistance
to wear. This also leads to an increase in flares
and a loss of sole depth creating the pancake
foot. Softer hoof walls and flaring make it more
difficult to keep the nails and therefore, the
shoes tight if the horse is shod. The loss of sole
depth is typically the cause of horses becoming
ouchy, especially on hard ground.
What can we do?
Maintain feet: Keep the trim/shoeing interval at
no more than 4 or 5 weeks even if the feet don’t
look very long. This makes it easier to keep the
flares at a minimum. As much flare should be
removed as possible without thinning the hoof
wall too much (this is a judgment call by your
farrier). Especially in flat feet, the sole is sacred
and should be preserved as much as possible. It
is also crucial to remove the appropriate
amount of wall as to provide adequate
clearance between the sole and ground. If your
horse is barefoot, products such as Vettec Sole
Guard, hoof casts, Hoof Armor and boots may
aid in getting you through the tough times.
Some horses may need shoes to stay
comfortable if doing heavy work. However, if
improperly applied, shoes can make the
problem worse. There are specific ways to shoe
these feet to improve the lack of sole depth. This
is a topic for another discussion.
Management: Decreasing the amount of
exposure to the moisture (including the number
of baths) will help when possible. Using hoof
dressings with venice turpentine or Keratex Hoof
Hardener may also be helpful. It is critical to
communicate with your farrier. Discuss any
soreness concerns so they will know when there
is a problem that needs to be addressed, ideally
sooner rather than later. If your horse is sore on a
regular basis after trimming or shoeing,
something needs to change.
Although a challenging time of year, your horse
doesn’t have to be sore all summer. The options
are many and depend on time, management
possibilities, finances, and your farrier’s skill level.
Dr. Barrett is a licensed veterinarian and a Certified
Journeyman Farrier. His practice is based in Ocala,
and focuses primarily on foot-associated lameness.
He currently is teaching the Farrier Science course at
the College of Central Florida’s Equine Program.
FISH AND WILDLIFE COMMISSION (FWC) TO
FLORIDA RESIDENTS: BE ‘BEAR AWARE’
Love is in the air for Florida black bears.
Breeding season for bears runs from June to July,
and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) is reminding homeowners
that bears are moving around, foraging for food
and looking for mates.
Page | 5

According to FWC bear management program
coordinator Dave Telesco, the agency is seeing
an increase in calls about bears in
neighborhoods around the state. The animals
are lured into neighborhoods to feast on
unsecured trash. His best advice: Do not feed
the bears. It is also illegal to feed bears in
Florida.
“Problems arise when bears have access to
people-related food sources such as pet foods,
garbage, barbecue grills, birdseed or livestock
feed,” Telesco said. “Bears learn very quickly to
associate people with food, and this puts the
animals at increased risk of illegal kills or crossing
highways and getting hit by vehicles.”
Black bears normally are too shy to risk contact
with humans, but their strong food drive can
overwhelm these instincts. Residents can help
these bears “move on,” so they don’t cause a
conflict. “If people remove the attractants, the
bears will stay where we want them to stay – in
wooded areas – and not enter urban and
suburban neighborhoods,” Telesco said.
Properly storing and securing garbage is a
proven method of discouraging bears.
Barbecue grills should be stored in a secure
place, such as a garage or a sturdy shed when
they are not in use (typically evenings). Keep
garbage cans secure and only place them
outside on the morning of pickup, rather than
the night before. People can encourage their
neighbors, community or local government to
use bear-resistant trash containers or dumpsters.
To find out where to get them, go to
MyFWC.com/Bears and select “Brochures &
Other Materials.”
“Another way people can help is to feed pets
indoors or bring in dishes after feeding,” Telesco
said.
“Relocating bears is not always the best option,”
Telesco explained. “Most bears do not stay
where we put them, and more than half of the
bears we move just end up causing conflicts
again in a new location.”
Page | 6
“If you see a black bear, remain calm. Don’t run.
Walk calmly toward a building or vehicle and
get inside,” Telesco said. “If you have children or
pets, bring them inside. Once you are in a
secure location, encourage the bear to leave
by banging pots and pans, blowing a car or air
horn or whistle. The more stressful a bear’s
encounter with you, the less likely it is to come
back.”
If a bear is in a tree, leave it alone. Remove
people and dogs from the area. The bear
usually will come down and leave when it feels
safe, which is typically after dark.
If the bear is threatening the safety of humans,
pets or livestock or is causing property damage,
report it to the FWC at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
Residents can find out more about living with
black bears at MyFWC.com/Bear.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BEARS
Q. How many bears are there in Florida?
A. The best scientifically valid population
estimates total 2,500 to 3,000 bears statewide.
Bears currently live in eight relatively isolated
areas. While some populations appear to be
doing well, others are still recovering.
Q. What do I do if I see a bear?
A. If you encounter a bear at close range,

emain standing upright, back up slowly and
speak to the bear in a calm, assertive voice. Do
NOT feed or intentionally attract bears. If a bear
eats something on your property, take note of
what it is and secure it once the bear leaves.
NEVER approach or surprise a bear. If you see a
bear from a distance, enjoy the experience, but
do not move toward the bear. If you are close,
do not make any sudden or abrupt movements.
Back way slowly and be sure the bear has an
obvious escape route.
If you are in your yard:
• Make sure you are in a safe area and that
the bear has a clear escape route. Then,
make noise or bang pots and pans to scare
the bear away.
• Do NOT turn your back, play dead, climb a
tree or run. Back away slowly into the house
or a secure area.
• Avoid direct eye contact. Bears and many
other animals may view this as aggressive
behavior.
• Report any bear that is threatening the safety
of humans, pets or livestock to the FWC’s
Wildlife Alert hotline, 888-404-FWCC(3922)
(see the “contact us” page). Cell phone
users can call *FWC or #FWC.
Q. Are black bears fast runners or good
climbers?
A. Absolutely! Bears can run up to 35 mph and
climb 100 feet up a tree in 30 seconds! Do NOT
run or climb a tree when you encounter a bear.
• Don't run. Running triggers a chase instinct in
many animals, including bears. You can’t
outrun a bear.
• Don't climb a tree. Bears are excellent tree
climbers. Mother black bears often send their
cubs up a tree when they sense danger. You
don’t want to end up in a tree with a couple
of cubs above you and a mother bear below
you! If a bear chases you, you'll just end up
fending off a bear in a tree rather than on
the ground.
• Don’t play dead or turn your back on the
bear. Back away slowly, make sure the bear
has a clear escape route. Stop and hold your
ground if your movement away seems to
irritate instead of calm the bear.
If bears feel threatened, they may clack their
teeth together, moan, blow, huff or paw the
ground. The bear is showing you that it is as
uncomfortable with the situation as you are.
These are not indications of aggressive intent or
an imminent attack. Truly predatory or
aggressive black bears are eerily silent.
Q. What do I do if the bear stands up on its hind
legs?
A. If the bear stands up, this is NOT an aggressive
behavior. The bear is only trying to see you
better to figure out what you are and assess
whether or not you are a threat. Back away
slowly, making sure the bear has a clear escape
route.
Q. What do I do if a bear comes toward me or
attacks?
A. If the bear paws the ground, huffs and puffs,
clacks and snorts, or runs directly at you but
stops before reaching you and returns to where
it started, it is trying to scare you off. If you stand
your ground, the bear will likely stop and move
away. No matter what happens, do not run
away. Continue slowly backing away, talking
and holding up your arms. The bear may charge
or vocalize several times until it is comfortable
turning its back on you and leaving.
While there have been no predatory bear
attacks on people in Florida, more than a dozen
people have been bitten and scratched by
bears defending themselves, cubs or food
sources.
If a black bear attacks you: Fight back
aggressively. People in other states have
successfully fended off black bear attacks using
rocks, sticks or even their bare hands. Bears are
wild animals and must be respected. Even
though they are typically quiet and shy animals,
they have the potential to seriously harm
humans. Do not take unnecessary risks. ■
MINUTES OF STRIDE DRESSAGE BOARD MEETING
May 21, 2012 At Barbara Brown’s
Submitted by Secretary Margaret Mayer
Unanimously accepted by Board on 5/30/12
2012 Board Attended: Hellena Smejda, Irene
Gentile, Carola Sanz, Margaret Mayer, Judy
Downer, Vickie Rollack, Barbara Brown. Guest:
Loretta Lucas
Hellena called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.
The minutes of the March 2012 Membership
meeting had been previously accepted by e-
mail and were published in the April newsletter.
They are also available online at
http://stridedressage.org/stride_business.htm .
On January 16 there had been a discussion of
changing business meetings to be separate from
general meetings. Irene made a motion to
accept. Loretta seconded the motion. The
motion passed. However, although this has
streamlined the general meeting, it made
several members who have put much time and
effort into the club feel left out of the decision
making process. They were made to feel
isolated and uninvolved. Loretta Lucas brought
this to the Board’s attention. The board revisited
their January decision and discussed at length
how to correct the decision. As a result, a short
business meeting will be held at the beginning of
each general membership meeting.
Hellena passed out copies of the 2012 budget,
and reported that income from shows is higher
than budgeted earlier this year. While the
budget projected an income of $63 for the year,
the new estimate is to end the year with net
income (over 2012 expenses) of $2,463. Hellena
noted, however, that in 2013 STRIDE will be
spending an additional $1,750 in higher Florida
Horse Park fees ($350 more per show), so a close
watch on expenses is still in order.
Barbara presented the dates being considered
for the 2013 show series. They are February 17,
March 31, May 19, September 29, and October
27. These still could change because Barbara is
on the lookout for conflicts with eventing and
driving shows that would affect our attendance.
Page | 8
The Florida Horse Park submitted a draft contract
which would add $350 per show to cover
expenses that until now have been included at
no charge (even though they are chargeable
items). The Board postponed accepting the 2013
contract pending Barbara’s review of potential
date conflicts.
Loretta has volunteered to be in charge of
keeping our Facebook page active. The page is
at https://www.facebook.com/pages/STRIDE-
Dressage-of-Ocala-FL. Loretta will approach our
official show photographer, Sylvia Palmer, to
send us (at no charge) at least 5 photos from
each show to display on the page. This will also
help promote her business. We need to
encourage all STRIDE members to “Like” us and
post their show, training, or just fun photos of
their horses.
Wow, once again we are discussing the shows
and how to make them run smoothly so they are
a pleasure to the competitors and the
volunteers. An ad hoc Show Committee was
formed. Judy Downer will be the chairperson.
Other members are Barbara Brown, Irene Gentile
and Vickie Rollack, as well as Charlotte
Trentelman (who is not a Board member). The
Committee will meet with the Show Secretary
and also resolve issues that have been open to
interpretation. The following were discussed:
• Define and streamline daily show
championships.
• Make clear in future Omnibus what exactly
qualifies as novice rider and open classes.
• Final schedule needs to be in volunteer
coordinator’s hands the Monday before the
show.
• The final times are on the program (not on
the board) and are placed in the show
packet.
• Create a “request for proposal” for the paid
show secretary job for 2013.
• Create a volunteer job description for each
position, so that everyone knows what is
expected.
• Place this volunteer list on our web page.
• Include volunteer preference line on 2013
STRIDE membership application.

• Form a volunteer committee so Irene is not
always stuck with the hot potato the day of
the show.
• Create a proper hitching guide, as ADS
requires at their shows. This will go in the
packets. We have relaxed shows but they still
must be as safe as possible. Barbara has
volunteered to take charge of this also.
We reviewed our calendar for the rest of the
year (see calendar on last page of minutes)
• Our next event is the Volunteer training day
on June 23, which Charlotte is graciously
hosting at her farm in Anthony, Rebel Ridge.
8 am. to 1pm. General Membership meeting
and Potluck lunch to follow, bring a dish to
pass. Each rider or volunteer trainer receives
a STRIDE voucher, and each volunteer
trainee receives a voucher but only if they
sign up that day to volunteer at either the
Sept or Oct show.
• July 18, Possibly a lecture on Social Media.
(Usually we do not have a July meeting).
Judy Downer will check with Katie Walker
whether she is willing to present.
• July 31, Board Meeting Monday at 6pm, at
Margaret Mayer’s.
• August 18, from 6-9 pm. pool party and
general membership meeting at Lonni
Bechen’s.
• August: 2013 board nominations begin.
• Audrey Hartnett has offered to do one free
(to the club) driving clinic. It may happen at
CraneWood South unless she has a location
she would prefer. Irene Gentile will confirm
date and location with Audrey. Note added
on 5/30: Date confirmed Sept 16, location
TBD.
• Hellena is looking for ideas for speakers in
Sept and Oct.
• The 2013 nominations for officers will be
presented at the October meeting, and the
election will be held at the November
general membership meeting to be held on
Saturday of the riding clinic.
• Karen Kennedy is chairing November’s riding
clinic. Date and particulars are still in the
works.
• Our general meetings are being changed to
the 3 rd . Wednesday of each month (unless
otherwise noted when held with clinics or
other events), due to conflicts with another
local Dressage group, since some of our
members belong to both groups.
• The Banquet and year end awards
ceremony will be held Dec 15. Irene is
chairing the banquet committee and needs
additional volunteers.
Irene suggested that STRIDE award her friend Ellie
Wright with an Honorary Membership, due to
Ellie’s all-day volunteering at all our shows.
Motion was made by Barbara Brown and
seconded by Judy Downer. Passed Unanimously.
Hellena adjourned the meeting. Irene seconded
the motion. All agreed; the meeting was
adjourned.
Olympics Flash
Ocala’s Pierre St. Jacques will be at the June
selection trials in Gladstone after winning big at the
Lexington, KY CDI3* in May. Wish them well at
