Golden Oats Essay:<br />
Goodbye, Old Friend<br />

On Sunday, January 5th, 1994 I lost my best friend.<br />
Although his exact age was unknown, Salt, known as<br />
Sidekick <strong>to</strong> many, was thought <strong>to</strong> be almost 40 years<br />
old when he died. True <strong>to</strong> his exceptional spirit, less<br />
than one week before he died, he was galloping and<br />
bucking on the trail like a young colt.<br />
My first recollections <strong>of</strong> Salt were when he was<br />
purchased by Silver Springs Farm <strong>to</strong> pull their sleigh<br />
in the winter. His talent for jumping was discovered<br />
when it was noticed that none <strong>of</strong> the fences on the<br />
farm could hold him when he felt like socializing. This<br />
trend continued in other barns which he inhabited...he<br />
would simply hop from paddock <strong>to</strong> paddock visiting<br />
his friends. Eventually, everyone gave up on turning<br />
him out and just opened his stall door in the morning.<br />
He would frequently be seen jumping around the cross<br />
country course – by himself!<br />
Salt’s love for jumping led <strong>to</strong> his being used in the<br />
riding school w<strong>here</strong> he taught hundreds <strong>of</strong> children<br />
<strong>to</strong> love riding over the course <strong>of</strong> nearly 10 years. His<br />
fascination with children and his patience (reserved<br />
only for small children) also allowed him <strong>to</strong> work<br />
in the handicapped riding program at Silver Springs<br />
w<strong>here</strong> he helped children who had never walked <strong>to</strong><br />
run, and children who had never spoken <strong>to</strong> laugh out<br />
loud. One <strong>of</strong> his favorite things <strong>to</strong> do was <strong>to</strong> go Trick<br />
or Treating on Halloween night. Shimmering in the<br />
dark, and snorting dramatically, he kept all 4 feet<br />
firmly and carefully planted as little ghosts and goblins<br />
stuck snickers bars up his nose.<br />
Salt was a familiar face in the hunter ring for almost<br />
two decades -- first with the riders from Silver Springs,<br />
then with me, and finally with my sister, Alison. As an<br />
open hunter, he gamely went w<strong>here</strong> few <strong>of</strong> his stature<br />
(and girth size!) had gone before or since. In a world<br />
<strong>of</strong> bay thoroughbreds, his Percheron physique was a<br />
standout!!!<br />
Well in<strong>to</strong> his 20s, Salt <strong>to</strong>ok on a new career in<br />
evening. In a half dozen events, he distinguished<br />
himself not only by his good placings, but also by<br />
his affinity for destroying starting boxes during<br />
the countdown. After his first events, his no<strong>to</strong>riety<br />
spread, and a small crowd would gather <strong>to</strong> watch<br />
him as the timer shouted “30 seconds”. Showing in<br />
jumper ring in his 30s, one competi<strong>to</strong>r noted that<br />
“with a bit more experience, nobody will be able <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>uch him.”<br />
Over the years, Salt has spent time in many barns -<br />
he outlasted all <strong>of</strong> them. He spent the last years <strong>of</strong> his<br />
life living in Dunrobin w<strong>here</strong> the loving care that he<br />
received allowed him <strong>to</strong> be healthy and happy until<br />
the end. Never sick and never lame, he lived with<br />
gus<strong>to</strong> until his last day when a stroke <strong>to</strong>ok him from<br />
us. He is buried next <strong>to</strong> one <strong>of</strong> his many, many equine<br />
friends. Goodbye, my friend, I will never forget you.
