AAOS Announces Partnership with Ponseti International
“AAOS [American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons] is proud to support PIA...and is
working directly with the PIA board of
directors and staff to raise awareness and
promote participation in the offered
courses.” (AAOS Now, June 2012 Issue)
Ponseti International Association (PIA) is
honored to have a great partner in the
American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons. With this partnership, PIA will be
expanding our training programs in a number
of countries, such as Brazil, the Philippines,
and Pakistan. Our hope is that we will have
4,000 trained providers in the next ten
years.
The partnership between PIA and AAOS is
just one of the ways that PIA remains the
leader in training and educating physicians
and other health care providers around the
world on the treatment of clubfoot.

Dr. Shafique Pirani Named Medical Advisory Board Chair
PIA is pleased to
announce that Dr.
Shafique Pirani, a
Canadian doctor, has
been named the chair
of the Medical
Advisory Board. Dr,
Pirani has done
extensive work in
Uganda as the Project
Director of the
Uganda Sustainable
Clubfoot Care Project.
He also established the
Pirani Clubfoot
Severity Score, a
clubfoot assessment
tool.
We look forward to
building a lasting
relationship with
Pirani in the coming
years. His
commitment to PIA
is very strong and
we are grateful for
all of the work he
continues to do
around the world.

Morcuende
James Kunzman, MD was one of
the last people to see Dr. Ignacio
Ponseti in his office in the Department
of Orthopaedics at University
of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Kunzman, who is a 1956
University of Iowa MD alum and a
retired orthopaedic surgeon from
San Diego, California was back on
campus in the fall of 2009 and
wanted to be sure to spend time
with Dr. Ponseti, the renowned
University of Iowa physician and
medical pioneer who developed a
non-surgical method to correct
clubfoot coined the Ponseti Method.
“Dr. Ponseti was so delightful,”
said Dr. Kunzman. What surprised
Dr. Kunzman the most was
that the Ponseti International
Association (PIA) could help so
many people all over the world
for a minimal cost. Over the last
few years, Dr. Kunzman has made
gifts totaling over $100,000 to
James Kunzman, MD (1956 MD
alum), along with his girlfriend
Debra David and Dr. Ignacio Ponseti
support the efforts of PIA and
specifically to PIA’s second International
Symposium, which will be
held in Iowa City, Iowa on October
4-5, 2012.
“Dr. Kunzman understands the
impact of training doctors and
other health care workers in the
Ponseti Method to make sure that
every child born with clubfoot has
the opportunity to be treated.
The Ponseti International
Association is so grateful for all
that Dr. Kunzman has given and
his support has allowed PIA to
host another International Symposium,”
said Dr. Jose Morcuende,
Chief Medical Director of the
Ponseti International Association
and Associate Professor in the UI
Department of Orthopaedics.

Symposium will focus on
approaches, treatment and
outcomes of the Ponseti Method,
community building of all
healthcare providers involved with
Ponseti International, as well as
demonstrate why, all of us
together, are the global leaders in
the education and training of the
Ponseti Method.
We have much to celebrate since
our first International Clubfoot
Symposium in 2007. At that
time, more than 230 attendees
from 20 plus countries signed the
International Clubfoot Declaration

2012 Ponseti Races will be held October 6, 2012
Please join us Saturday, October
6th, 2012 for the Annual Ponseti
Races to be held at the University
of Iowa Sports Medicine Center.
This scenic 5k/10k race will be a
festive event to wrap up the week
of the International Clubfoot Symposium
and will help raise money
for clubfoot research and physician
training. Iowa football coach,
Kirk Ferentz, will be the official
race starter. Together families,
students, and doctors of the
clubfoot community will honor
the legacy of Dr. Ponseti by
running for a cause that truly
changes the lives of children

Picture book written for children with clubfoot
Casting a baby with club foot has
its challenges, but when I found
out my 4 year old son showed
relapse, a new set of challenges
were ahead.
I looked for a picture book to
read to my son and couldn’t find
one, so I wrote one. Bo’s Cherub
Feet is about a bear named Bo that
was born with club feet, shows
relapse, and needs a series of
casts on his feet.
Even after the casting series on
the foot that relapsed, my son
needed surgery and this meant
more challenges to prepare him.
Because the first book worked so
well for him, I wrote Bo’s Straight
and Strong Feet to help my son
understand that he didn’t do
anything wrong to make this
surgery happen. It was a big part
of helping him handle so much
change in his young life.
These books were written to help
my son, and if that is all they ever
do, they have accomplished their
purpose, but if they can help
others, it would bring me joy.
I am forever grateful for the
Ponseti Method that has
corrected my son’s feet. I would
recommend it without hesitation
to anyone whose children are
born with club foot. Written by
