spirit of giving Gallery raffle to benefit InspireHealth cancer care centre North Vancouver’s Bel Art Gallery is putting forward nearly $1,500 in prizes for a Christmas Raffle that will benefit InspireHealth, a foremost Canadian integrated cancer centre. Beatrice Schreiber, co-owner of Bel Art Gallery in scenic Deep Cove, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and shortly afterwards started her journey to recovery at Inspire- Health. “It was a gift from heaven to receive the chance to learn and participate in the InspireLife program,” said Schreiber. “Today, I am very thankful to have acquired tools to improve my health and found new ways to enhance my healing. I am much more balanced after attending InspireHealth’s programs and have increased the strength to help with my recovery. The essential benefits I have gained have been such a blessing and everyone who works there contributes to a healing environment which is unlike any other clinic.” To honour this positive life experience, Beatrice and Stefan Schreiber are donating an original artwork by Vancouver artist Friedrich Peter, signed art prints by Kathia Berger, Vancouver Canucks tickets and an assortment of crafts and gifts to the raffle. All told, the prizes are valued at $1,500. The main prize – the artwork by Peter – is on display at InspireHealth’s library, 200 – 1330 West 8 th Ave., Vancouver. Tickets are by donation with a $5 minimum and on sale throughout the month of November. All proceeds will go to InspireHealth. Considering the original cost of their investment was $4,000, they come out $370 ahead while supporting their favourite charity with a gift worth $10,000. Ask your advisor for more information. Many people choose the late fall to tidy up their portfolio. This is often the time of year to lock in capital gains and get rid of underperforming stocks, making it a perfect time to also consider a charitable gift. Before you do, talk to your investment advisor and ask him or her to review your portfolio and recommend the appropriate shares to donate. It’s also worth noting that even if you are donating depreciated securities, you can still claim a capital gains loss and apply that loss against other taxable capital gains to reduce your overall tax payable. After giving birth to three children, Helen moved to Canada when her husband was accepted to the University of Ontario. She worked full time to support the family while pursuing her own educational goals. Within months of her arrival in Canada, both her parents died and the spousal abuse escalated. Helen fled the relationship. She packed up her children and moved to Vancouver, where they sought shelter at a transition house. They Give and come out ahead after tax By Leslie Howard As we approach the season of giving, there is a new way for Canadians to support their favourite charity and lower their tax bill. The federal government recently passed legislation that enables donors to make a taxfree donation of their appreciated publicly traded securities to the registered charity of their choice. As long as the individual donor gives the actual securities, they pay no capital gains tax on the growth in the shares while also receiving a charitable tax receipt for the current full market value of the shares. This tax receipt can be used to offset income tax that would otherwise be payable. In some instances donors actually make money on their gift when their tax savings are greater than the original cost of the shares. How does it work? The donation of any securities valued at more than $200 will result in tax savings that are approximately equal to the top marginal tax rate. Photo by D. Roels be an “easier time” later.
