events & speakers 22nd Annual Economic Outlook Forum At the podium Warren Jestin Start the New Year off with a glimpse of what’s ahead. The Vancouver Board of Trade is pleased to announce its annual Economic Outlook is running for the 22nd year straight. After two years facing an economic downturn, the transition to better times is ongoing. The Bank of Canada has recast its projections for Canada’s rate of recovery and anticipates a moderate rate of growth for 2011. Other economists are doing the same, looking at the many risks still being faced, including the slow recovery in the U.S., sovereign risk in several European countries, higher consumer debt and, for Canada, the increasing value of the dollar. In the midst of this recovery, B.C. companies are setting their sights on emerging markets in Asia with the hope that by diversifying product markets and increasing productivity they will overcome the moderate rate of growth anticipated for the nation. As we face the prospects of 2011, The Board’s panel of financial and industry experts will weigh in with their perspectives on the economic outlook for the year ahead. Warren Jestin, chief economist for Scotiabank, will give the keynote address. Jestin has more than 30 years experience working at Scotiabank and during that time has become a popular speaker and media commentator on economic issues in Canada and abroad. Jestin has also taught at several Canadian universities and worked for the Bank of Canada. He has served on the C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council and has been involved with policy committees for the Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce and the Toronto Board of Trade. After Jestin, The Board’s expert panel dish will share their thoughts on the economic climate for the year 2011. Among the group will be returning panellist Helmut Pastrick, chief economist for Central 1 Credit Union. Pastrick has spoken several times at The Board and is a regular commentator in the news media. He joined Central 1, the umbrella organization for the credit union system in B.C. and Ontario, in 1997 and prior to that worked with the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation in B.C.
