GAME ZONE With Libby, Aaron and Anya Game testers Plumber’s perspective the traditional pre-Christmas rush of games has started, and this week three classic characters are battling for shoppers’ pennies. First up is Super Mario 3D Land, the first ever proper 3D adventure for the little plumber. Gamers are still undecided about whether the 3DS is a novelty or a great gadget, but the 3D effect is amazingly useful when you have to judge distances for jumps in games like this. Sometimes you don’t know what’s going on, but that’s part of the fun. If you collect a Super Leaf you can kit Mario out with a Tanooki suit, which lets him use a tail-spin either as a way to glide across gaps or to bash baddies. You can also grab Fire Flowers or Boomerang Flowers to give Mario flaming fireballs or a boomerang weapon. Libby says: “If you’ve not been sure about asking for a 3DS for Christmas, then this game gives you the reason to. It looks amazing and plays brilliantly. It’s the best 3D game I’ve played by a mile. I love Mario and this 10/10 game feels like they actually want you to succeed – for once!” This year is Sonic’s 20th anniversary and Sonic Generations is SEGA’s latest attempt to breathe some life back into the character. Some of his recent games haven’t got great reviews, but this one has had critics falling in love with Sonic all over again. The plot involves time holes opening up, which leads to Sonic coming across a younger version of himself. That’s the excuse for having old-school 2D levels with the original Sonic, while modern Sonic gets some funkier 3D levels to whizz about in. There’s more emphasis on classic Sonic racing than there has been in recent games, and fans will also get to see some familiar levels in new ways. Aaron says: “This has super high-tech graphics and gets unbelievably fast. as old Sonic. The re-made levels are amazing fun, and 9/10 the high speed action is great!.” Nintendo have been getting their money’s worth out of Kirby this year, but the cute Kirby Mass Attack is a bit of a change from the previous games. The little pink dude has been split into ten by the Skull Gang’s boss, Necrodeus. You start off with just one Kirby and have to get more by eating fruit, which you can get from trees and bushes or by whacking enemies and boxes. Getting more Kirbys is key to success, as there are certain obstacles and enemies that need the extra weight or strength that more Kirbys provide. There are tonnes of neat touches in the game, like the way a dead Kirby will turn white and start flying up to heaven, giving you a few crucial seconds to jump up and pull him back down to earth. Anya says: “This game is full of surprises. The objective is to get stronger by getting more Kirbys but, like most games, there are evil characters out to stop you.
