“Howdy Doo’s” and Ringing Bells
Well, I survived my first weekend. But it was far more than just
surviving, it was wonderful. The welcome I received was truly uplifting.
These days of transition can be hard for everyone, yet there was a
sense of joy as time and time again I was welcomed to the community.
I look forward to many happy years of ministry here at Holy Cross.

The weekend was not without a few moments of confusion. I am
having a tough time adjusting to the nuances of using the alarm
system in the building. I set it off twice on Saturday night. The good
news is that I have gotten to meet some very fine Suffolk Police
Officers who responded to the alarms. And the one time their arrival
on the parish grounds was perfectly timed, as there was a group of
young adults preparing to use dirt bikes and quads on the parish grounds. Unfortunately, it
seems that we need to spend time and energy on maintaining security of parish property.
This is an issue that will demand ongoing attention.
Also, the house seems to be having a bit of a reaction to its new resident. A few unusual
things happened this weekend. One of the hinges on the front door suddenly snapped into
pieces as I closed it. And then later the side of the dishwasher fell off! And yes, I have set
that alarm off as well. But, it is a beautiful house that I am happy to make my home. There is
still a mountain of boxes to be emptied, but I am working my way through the pile slowly but
surely.
“What should we call you?” was a question I received more than a few times this weekend. I
prefer to be called Fr. Michael. I’m not offended by Fr. Mike, but all things being equal I prefer
to use my proper baptismal name.
I am changing the schedule for Reconciliation. I will be available Saturday afternoons from
3:45-4:30 PM. And I am available at other times by appointment.
I look forward to experiencing Vacation Bible School that begins this week. I understand that
it is a cast of thousands (well, at least 100) that work together to give our young children a
happy time; but one that also gives them a deeper appreciation of the scriptures and the story
of God’s love. I’m sure it will be a great week for everyone involved.
These first days in the parish feel like I am trying to jump aboard a moving train. There are
so many aspects to parish life that cannot take a break just because there is a new pastor.
And so I have to do my best to learn the different procedures, meet lots of people, and do all
the things a parish priest needs to do. But happily, there are many friendly hands helping me
adjust to all that needs to be done. And, I am finding out if I miss jumping on the train the first
time, it comes around the circle again soon enough for me to give it another shot. This is a
great place; I am so blessed to be here.

WOMEN AT PRAYER
Calling all Women to Come Pray with Us
We will meet on Saturday July 13, 2013 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM
in the Father Joe Room. We welcome all women to join this
amazing group that meets on the second Saturday of each month
to pray together. We gather to share what’s on our minds, read
the upcoming week’s Gospel, then have our quiet time to listen
and pray by ourselves to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to our
hearts and souls. We then rejoin as a group and, if prompted,
share. We end with petitions for anyone in need and pray the Our
Father. Simple but profound!!
Women tend to lack quiet time. We seem to be always busy. This is a Saturday once a
month for YOU away from the busyness of life to quiet yourself and allow our God to
speak to your soul. We encourage you to join us. We look forward to your gifts and
your presence. Please mark your calendar for July 13th at 9:30. See you then....
COMMUNITY VEGETABLE GARDEN
Help Needed!
Our Community Vegetable Garden provides fresh produce for those struggling
families who come to our Outreach office seeking assistance. The vegetable garden
has been such a huge success in the past, that it has even provided vegetables to
parishioners from its surplus. But, in order to continue its success, we need your
help!
There is a great need in the following areas: picking
vegetables, weeding the beds, making sure everything’s
been watered, and general maintenance.
If you possess a “green thumb” or would like to, or are just
looking to volunteer some of your time to a good cause,
