JAMES EPPS from OUTPOST GALLERY, Norwich
OUTPOST is an artist run gallery based in Norwich committed
to the uncompromising presentation of contemporary art, with
core programme of 11 exhibitions per year. A programme of events and offsite projects runs
alongside. James Epps is a member of the Steering Committee for OUTPOST and will be
giving a talk this afternoon. If you’re interested in hearing about this artist-run gallery, their
programme of events, offsite projects and unique artist membership scheme, please do come

Following an event at Tate Modern celebrating Smith’s
film installation ‘Xilitla’, the Visual Arts Department at
West Dean College is hosting a talk by Melanie Smith
exploring her work with Edward James’s surrealist
garden, Las Pozas, at Xilitla in Mexico, and the
relationship between modernism, the ruin and
contemporary art. This event is free and open to the
public but booking is required. Please contact David

FULL TIME PROGRAMME NEWS
High tech comes to West Dean
Last week Dr Bruce Kaiser and Mike Dobby of Bruker
International held a 3-day workshop at West Dean in X-ray
fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. Running for many years
all over the world the workshop is a popular CPD event
for conservation professionals and was open to a number
of students and other invited professionals. It offered a
great opportunity for our conservation tutors to be
updated on the use of our own newly-acquired XRF
instrument. Widely used in Museums and Galleries XRF is
a way of using X-rays to identify the elements in a material,

safely, and without having to take a sample. It is useful both in practical identification of objects
before conservation treatments, and historical research into the provenance of objects. All
those who attended gained a great deal from it and it represents another step in the
development of analysis as part of everyday conservation practice at West Dean.
Also a reminder that if anyone would like to visit the studios the Visual Art Studios are open
every Tuesday 13:30 – 14:00 and the Tapestry Studio gives a talk on Wednesdays at 13:30.

Annual opening of West Dean House – Sunday 23 June
Appeal for artefacts
For the annual Open Day of West Dean House we are showcasing many courses alongside the
floral decorations in West Dean House. We have been offered some really beautiful and eye
catching items but we still need more. Could we please have a sample of work from the
following courses:
Textiles eg silk screen embroidery, bunting and some tools.
A wind instrument and a string instrument.
Jewellery (but not with precious stones/metals.), beads and similar.
A stained glass panel.
A willow structure
A large freestanding sculpture (any medium but moveable)
