companions <strong>of</strong> William the Conqueror at Hastings and was lord <strong>of</strong> Stafford with<br />

the possessions <strong>of</strong> seven earls. His brothers, Roger II and Beranger, also had<br />

consi<strong>de</strong>rable domains. The former (Roger II) was buil<strong>de</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Clifford castle<br />

“Willelmus...filius Osberni, propinquus ducis Willelmi” foun<strong>de</strong>d “duo monasteriain<br />

honorem...Mariæ unum apud Liram...alterum apud Cormelias”, adding that he<br />

buried “A<strong>de</strong>linam filiam Rogerii <strong>de</strong> Toenio uxorem suam” at Lyre. "Willelmo filio<br />

Osberni et…Ælicia eius uxore filia Rogeri <strong>de</strong> Thoneio" foun<strong>de</strong>d the abbey <strong>of</strong> Lyre<br />

by charter dated 1046. Robert <strong>of</strong> Torigny's De Immutatione Ordinis Monachorum<br />

records that "Willermus filius Osberni Normanniæ dapifer et cognatus Willermi<br />

ducis…Aelizam uxorem suam filiam Rogeri <strong>de</strong> Toeneio" was buried in the<br />

monastery <strong>of</strong> Lyre. The necrology <strong>of</strong> Lyre monastery records the <strong>de</strong>ath "6 Oct" <strong>of</strong><br />

"A<strong>de</strong>liz uxor Willelmi hujus loci fundatoris". The necrology <strong>of</strong> the monastery <strong>of</strong><br />

Ouche records the <strong>de</strong>ath "6 Oct" <strong>of</strong> "mater Willelmi Britolii A<strong>de</strong>liza". m (before<br />

1046) as his first wife, GUILLAUME FitzOsbern <strong>Seigneur</strong> <strong>de</strong> Breteuil, son <strong>of</strong><br />

OSBERN <strong>de</strong> Crépon & his wife Emma d'Ivry (-killed in battle Cassel, Flan<strong>de</strong>rs 22<br />

Feb 1071, bur Abbaye <strong>de</strong> Cormeilles)." (Norman Nobillty).<br />

ROBERT DE TOSNY LORD OF STAFFORD was born about 1040. He died in 1088 in<br />

Stafford, England.<br />

Notes for Robert <strong>de</strong> Tosny Lord <strong>of</strong> Stafford:<br />

"ROBERT [III] <strong>de</strong> Tosny (-[1088], bur [Evesham Abbey]). Domesday Book records<br />

“Robert <strong>of</strong> Stafford” holding Denchworth in Wantage Hundred in Berkshire; “Robert <strong>de</strong><br />

Tosny” holding Miswell in Tring Hundred and Barwythe in Danish Hundred in<br />

Hertfordshire; "Robert <strong>of</strong> Stafford" holding land in Oxfordshire; Stoneton in<br />

Northamptonshire [Warwickshire]. The entries in Hertfordshire prece<strong>de</strong> those which<br />

record the holdings <strong>of</strong> Raoul <strong>de</strong> Tosny in Hertfordshire, which suggests that they refer<br />

to the Robert Tosny/Stafford who was Raoul´s brother. Henry I King <strong>of</strong> England<br />

confirmed donations to Conches, including the donation <strong>of</strong> "ecclesiam <strong>de</strong> Octona"<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> by "Robertus <strong>de</strong> Stafort filius Rogerii <strong>de</strong> Totteneio" with the consent <strong>of</strong> "filio meo<br />

Nicholao", by charter dated to [1130]. Robert´s connection with the Tosny family is<br />

confirmed by the undated charter un<strong>de</strong>r which “Robertus <strong>de</strong> Stafford” confirmed<br />

donations to Wotton Wawen Abbey, Warwickshire by “avus meus Robertus <strong>de</strong> Toenio<br />

et pater meus Nicolaus <strong>de</strong> Stafford”. No indication has been found <strong>of</strong> the i<strong>de</strong>ntity <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert [III]´s mother, but assuming that he was
