Preface
2 Preface
The CG2900 is a monolithic combo integrating GPS Measurement Engine (ME),
Bluetooth® and Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE), and FM TX/RX. It is manufactured on
45 nm process CMOS technology.
The CG2905 is a monolithic combo integrating GNSS Measurement Engine (ME),
Bluetooth ® and Bluetooth ® Low Energy (BLE), and FM TX/RX. It is manufactured on
Product overview
3 Product overview
The CG2900 and CG2905 are single-chip solutions that integrate GPS and GNSS
respectively, Bluetooth ® , and FM TX/RX functionality on 45 nm and 40 nm process CMOS
technology respectively.
In addition to extremely low static power consumption, both the CG2900 and CG2905
provide a multitude of system improvements, such as embedded SBC codec or on-chip
RDS to help offload the host from these tasks, thereby reducing the overall system power
consumption. With an extremely high level of integration, the CG2900 requires less than
10 external components while the CG2905 requires only 12 external components
(including filter and TCXO) allowing routing on low-cost PCBs, and placed on small formfactor
boards for thin and sleek designs.
3.1 Hardware features
This section identifies the top-level hardware features of this design.
3.1.1 Product type declaration
This product is listed as Bluetooth ® Component Product. If either of these devices are
used to implement Bluetooth ® in a product’s design, further qualification and listing is
required in accordance with the Bluetooth ® Qualification Process (ref. PRD 2.0). Visit
https://bluetooth.org/TPG/ to start new qualification process.
3.1.2 Hardware overview
Both the CG2900 and CG2905 are monolithic GPS (CG2900) or GNSS (CG2905),
BT+BLE, and FM TX/RX controller in one WLCSP package and has a common HCI
interface for all these subsystems. Each (CG2900 or CG2910) complete system is
operated from a single 1.8 V nominal supply, from V BAT , or from a combination of these.
Separate ground connections are provided to reduce parasitic coupling effects.
The CG2900 and CG2905 combine:
• A GPS and GNSS receiver respectively with its measurement engine.
• A BT+BLE transceiver and core including a CVSD transcoder and supporting a wide
band speech SBC transcoding, as well as A2DP SBC stereo encoding.
• A FM TX/RX RDS radio with sound processing and RDS data handling.
3.1.3 Standard operating conditions
• Normal temperature: 25 °C
• Operating ambient temperature range: -20 °C to +85 °C
• Typical core and I/O voltage: 1.8 V
• Core and I/O voltage range: 1.70 V to 1.95 V
• V BAT range: 2.3 V to 4.8 V
Product overview
3.1.4 Application
The CG2900 and CG2905 are designed and optimized for use in mobile applications,
such as smart phones, PNDs, PDAs, and digital cameras that have strict constraints on
footprint, power consumption, and battery life.
The CG2900 and CG2905 are designed to ensure coexistence and simultaneous usage
with other cellular radios, such as WCDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, LTE, TDSCDMA,
WiMAX, or WLAN. These devices deliver exceptional performances in these stringent
environments for a better overall user experience.
Figure 3
Mobile phone – software overview
Figure 3 presents the software partitioning between the host and the CG2900 or CG2905
sections. The GPS or GNSS, BT, and FM communicate with the host through the HCI
interface. This HCI interface supports specific commands reference to command and
transport layer specifications to support both GPS or GNSS and FM subsystem, next to
the BT subsystem.
Both CG2900 and CG2905 implement a common HCI interface to control the BT, FM, and
GPS or GNSS functions, which supports the HCI UART transport layer protocol using:
• BT SIG-standard commands for BT functions.
• Vendor-specific commands for GPS or GNSS, FM, and BT functions.
Details of the commands are documented in the software reference manual [10] and [11].
Bluetooth ® and Wireless LAN coexistence is also considered and demonstrated.
Bluetooth ® , Wireless LAN coexistence [6] provides customers in-depth understanding of
ST-Ericsson’s implementation to assist them in their product design.
The CHATS software in the evaluation kit from ST-Ericsson assists customers in the
evaluation of ST-Ericsson’s products. The CHATS user manual [4] provides a quick guide
