3.2 Constructions with non-auxiliary extension verbs<br />
The kinds <strong>of</strong> verbs which head these constructions typically carry modal meanings,<br />
like the less closely bound auxiliaries described in the previous section, but differ from<br />
them in that they do not require their following verb to agree with them in transitivity.<br />
Note that the auxiliary verbs in (55) and (56a) are transitive, in that they require a<br />
Genitive complement, but their following verbs are intransitive, while in (56b) both the<br />
auxiliary and the following verb are transitive. Schachter and Otanes (1972:266) label<br />
them “pseudo-verbs”. Most languages require a ligature between them and the<br />
following verb.<br />
