June 2011
FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND VICE-PRINCIPAL
It seems like it was September just a few days ago but we already find ourselves at
the end of another school year.
We would like congratulate our graduates, Jonathan, Michael, Zacharie, Bruce, Erin,
Rebecca, Shawn, Brittany, Sharef and Stuart. We wish them every success in the
future. Clifford Bowey will miss their smiling faces!
Thank you for returning the Determination Record (IPRC) forms promptly to the
classroom teachers. We appreciate getting them back so that we can complete the
planning process for next year.
Since January 2010, Clifford Bowey has been working hard to raise funds and
pursue grants to provide our primary yard with a much needed facelift. We are
absolutely thrilled to announce that this facelift will occur in August. The generosity
of Ottawa Carleton Education Network (OCENET) has allowed us to complete our
fundraising efforts. Many thanks to OCENET for making this possible.
Laurie & Cheryl
Thank You to our Job Coach, Lorrie Conley - from the desk of Sharon Ting
After many years as the Work Experience job coach, Lorrie Conley has decided to pass the
proverbial torch and move into a classroom full time. Lorrie has been taking our students
into the community to participate in the work experience programs . Lorrie has the unique
quality of inspiring the students that she works with. With her gentle approach, she can
turn an upset child into a cooperative child. Lorrie has the patience of a saint. Lorrie has
established a great relationship with the people in our community e.g., the staff at the
Ottawa Food Bank, Pizza Hut, and Zellers. Thank you so very much, Lorrie, for all of your
dedication and work with our young adults all these years.
Clifford Bowey – A Healthy Active School
Clifford Bowey has been a very active and healthy place to work, learn and
play this year. The WonderCares Fitness Challenge has just come to a close. We didn’t win any
official prizes, but participating classes all came out winners by meeting Health Canada’s
recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise during the school day for the eight weeks of the
Challenge. A good portion of our programming involves physical activities, for example,
swimming 2-3 times a week, gym classes 2-3 times a week, Movement and Music 2-3 times a
week, community outings such as fitness trail and park walks, and various work experience
activities. We also had our annual Wet & Wild Fun Day on June 15 with lots of active soaking,
squirting, and splashing festivities, and even a special visit by the fire truck. No one is ever idle for
long at Clifford Bowey! We are a busy and active crew. Congratulations to all for encouraging an
active and healthy lifestyle for all of our students. To see the national results of the WonderCares
Fitness Challenge, visit the website at:
http://www.wonderfitness.ca/
Clifford Bowey staff members have also been working on developing healthier lifestyles. Several
staff have taken up fitness training together after school, and a team of 22 Bowey women
competed in the Tim Horton’s Dragon Boat Festival on June 18. Jackie Kleinherenbrink brought
the Circling Dragons team together and Katherine Fownes rallied team spirit with her strong
leadership and the steady pace of her drum. Theresa Fournier kept the team on course with her
steering rudder and advice from the stern. Again, we didn’t win any medals, but what a team
spirit! Teamwork is so empowering just by working together toward a common goal. To see the
Citizen’s coverage of the Clifford Bowey Circling Dragons team, go to:
Ecoschools
Here we are in June and it is a great time to think of the growth we
have experienced over the year. The EcoSchool program has a lot to be proud of. We had
an inspection from the larger EcoSchools organization and they awarded Clifford Bowey
School a silver standing on our first year in the program! Way to go Clifford Bowey.
We are now down one less garbage pick-up a week!! That is amazing at how fast we have
seen the positive results of boomerang lunches and green bins in school.
The whole EcoSchools team looks forward to fine tuning our initiatives from this year and
beginning new ones in the 2011-2012 school year. We wish everyone a green summer.
The EcoSchool Team.

Transportation Route Schedules:
All 2011-2012 Transportation Route Schedules will be posted on the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority
website at www.ottawaschoolbus.ca by mid-August.
In addition to the bus route schedules being posted, please note that there is also a “Stop Locator” feature on
our website. This feature will allow parents to access bus stop information for their children starting in
mid-August when it will be updated with the 2011-2012 bus route schedules.
The “Stop Locator” feature returns bus stop and route information for eligible students who are assigned to
regular “yellow school bus” service or for eligible students who are assigned to OC Transpo Service.
OC Transpo route schedules will also be made available through the OSTA website or can be found directly
Sensory Mural
Thank You Nortel Community Volunteers
Many thanks to the Nortel Community Volunteers for our new sensory mural. This has been
an incredible addition to Clifford Bowey. This mural appeals to the visual and tactile senses of
our students and provides them with the opportunity to explore and learn through their
physical senses.
This new mural was a collaborative effort between Clifford Bowey and the community – teamwork
at its finest! Resident artist Jay Turner-Laviolette, in collaboration with Occupational
Therapist, Sarah Hudson, designed and presented the plan to our friends at Nortel Community
Volunteers. Roy Murrant and Harm Romback used their creative energy to open up a new
world of play and discovery for Clifford Bowey students.
School Council is Looking for New Faces in 2011 - 2012
Its hard to believe that another school year is come and gone. The school council had another
busy year in 2010 - 2011, and we are looking forward to next year. Some of the parents on
school council have children who will be graduating in the next couple of years. So we would
like to bring some new faces, and new ideas to the school council. If you have considered
volunteering at Clifford Bowey, joining the school council is a great way to participate in the
school's broader community. You don't need to make a large commitment.
There are typically 4 -5 meetings per year. Feel free to call me if you would like to know more
about the school council.
Please mark Thursday, October 6th (7:30 pm) on your calender, and come out to Clifford
Bowey, and join us for the council's first meeting of the 2011 - 2012 school year. That meeting
will also be the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Clifford Bowey School Foundation.
Have a great Summer
Don

Medical Information
New forms for administering medication must be completed by your child/young adults
doctor for each school year. Forms will be mailed home in July. Please drop off medications
and completed forms the week of 29 August to ensure that medication can be
administered on the first day of school.
Many Thanks
We once again wish to thank the Ottawa South Lions Club, and in particular Norm
Edwards, for making extra shelves for the shelving units that the Lions Club built for us two
years ago when they renovated the Vision Room. The room is used regularly by our
students and staff and by Susan Timmins, Itinerant Teacher for the Blind and Low Vision
Students, who has helped to organize our materials on these shelves as well as add to
them. It is now a well supplied, efficient and comfortable room in which to work with our
students.
