From the desk of Brenda Oleszko, Speech Language PathologistInformation about approval of Boardmaker and basic communicationdevices through the Assistive Devices Program in the Ottawa areaThere are different levels of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) service inOntario.Level 1:Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) registered as Individual Authorizers may prescribe boardmaking software (such as Boardmaker) and a very limited range of communication devices. Theycan authorize devices up to a specified cost ceiling according to the guidelines of the AssistiveDevices Program, Ont. Ministry of Health. Some of the SLPs at Clifford Bowey School have Individual Authorizer registration.Level 2 & 3:If a person is in need of a more complex high tech communication system (e.g., speechgenerating devices), then they must be referred to a Level 2 or 3 AAC service centre. These AACservice centres have a trans-disciplinary team with technology services to address the needs ofclients with more complex issues. They can authorize leases on selected devices and funding forhigh tech communication devices. The Clinic for Augmentative Communication (CAC) at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre(OCTC) is a Level 3: Expanded AAC Service Centre. The staff at CAC can authorize the full rangeof communication devices approved by the Assistive Devices Program. Please contact the speech language pathologist who provides services to your child’s class, if youhave any questions. She will discuss what resources might be suitable for your child and provideyou with details of how to apply for funding through the Assistive Devices Program. If appropriate, she may recommend that your child be seen through the Clinic for AugmentativeCommunication, OCTC.ECO SCHOOLSClifford Bowey School recently took part in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s EarthHour Challenge. Our school has 1280 light bulbs in total, and we had 1176 lights off for anhour. This saved the school 37.63 kWh of energy, which is the equivalent to 12,494 AAbatteries or the equivalent of saving 3.61 liters of crude oil. This month we will start to introduce the organics program in the school. We will be usinggreen bins in the kitchen program and in classrooms. On April 27 we will be taking part in theCity of Ottawa’s Spring Cleaning the Capital. This should help our school look its best forEducation Week. Other dates to keep in mind are April 22, which is Earth Day and April 19-23,which is Earth Week. Thank you for supporting our ECO SCHOOLS initiative. The Clifford Bowey EcoSchool Team.
