How to apply<br />
Transfer Students<br />
(Direct enrolment in the 2nd or 3rd<br />
year)<br />
International student admission<br />
opens on 30 October 2009 and<br />
closes on 15 October 2010. <strong>Courses</strong><br />
in São Paulo start in February 2010:<br />
admission closes on 30 January<br />
2010.<br />
To apply, students must follow IED<br />
application procedures:<br />
1 st step:<br />
• Complete the IED application<br />
form overleaf<br />
• Pay the enrolment fee in order to<br />
guarantee access to the school<br />
and receive the enrolment<br />
certificate for visa procedures<br />
Prepare the following documents:<br />
• A copy of your high school<br />
<strong>di</strong>ploma or equivalent (translated<br />
into Italian, Spanish or English)<br />
• Proof of language proficiency<br />
(one of the following):<br />
- submit a “language course<br />
certificate”<br />
- submit Italian/Spanish/English<br />
university <strong>di</strong>ploma<br />
- proof of competence by telephone<br />
interview for bilingual students<br />
• 4 passport photos<br />
• Photocopy of your valid passport<br />
(pages with personal data and<br />
photograph)<br />
2 nd step: mail the original and<br />
photocopied documents to the<br />
School of your choice.<br />
Portfolio: A portfolio is<br />
compulsory for transferring<br />
students (<strong>di</strong>rect admission to 2nd<br />
and 3rd year) and for first-year<br />
Transportation/car design students<br />
(in this case, submit about 10 hand<br />
drawings of transportation). In all<br />
other cases, a portfolio is advisable<br />
for quicker admission to and<br />
participation in competitions for<br />
scholarships.<br />
Students previously enrolled in an<br />
equivalent programme may apply<br />
for <strong>di</strong>rect admission to the 2nd year<br />
or (in exceptional cases) the 3rd<br />
year.<br />
1 st step: to enter the 2nd or 3rd<br />
year, mail the following items to<br />
the school of your choice in order to<br />
begin the admission process:<br />
• a copy of your university/college<br />
<strong>di</strong>ploma (if obtained)<br />
• a transcript issued by the<br />
university/college that you<br />
attended previously (cre<strong>di</strong>ts,<br />
amount of hours per subject,<br />
study programmes)<br />
• A portfolio of 15-20 examples<br />
of your projects (CD-ROM,<br />
preferred e-mail address)<br />
• A portfolio description sheet<br />
listing each piece by number, size<br />
and date of completion<br />
2 nd step: students will be informed<br />
of their acceptance by e-mail no<br />
later than two weeks after their<br />
portfolio has been received.<br />
3 rd step: students must pay the<br />
enrolment fee imme<strong>di</strong>ately upon<br />
receiving notice of acceptance into<br />
the 2nd or 3rd year and forward the<br />
signed application form alongside<br />
valid passport photocopy.<br />
Student Visas<br />
Upon receipt of the enrolment<br />
payment, the school will send the<br />
enrolment certificate to the student<br />
by express post. This certificate<br />
should be taken to the local<br />
Consulate to apply for a Student<br />
Visa.<br />
Starting date<br />
Students atten<strong>di</strong>ng the compulsory<br />
Italian/Spanish language course<br />
will begin in September.<br />
Students not atten<strong>di</strong>ng Italian/<br />
Spanish language courses or<br />
atten<strong>di</strong>ng courses held in English<br />
will begin in October.<br />
<strong>Courses</strong> in São Paulo begin in<br />
February.<br />

Most of our <strong>three</strong>-year courses are<br />
taught in the local language (Italian<br />
in Milan, Rome, Turin, Cagliari;<br />
Spanish in Madrid, Barcelona;<br />
Portuguese in São Paulo). Exceptions<br />
are made for all the <strong>three</strong>-year courses<br />
taught in English. All international<br />
students must meet the IED<br />
language requirements and submit<br />
a “certificate of course completion”<br />
from a language school. Those<br />
students who hold an Italian, Spanish,<br />
Portuguese or English College<br />
<strong>di</strong>ploma can submit this <strong>di</strong>ploma as<br />
confirmation of their language skills.<br />
IED Italian/SPANISH/<br />
portuguese language<br />
entrance requirement<br />
In order to be eligible for the<br />
compulsory Italian language course.<br />
• Far-Eastern students: 700 hours.<br />
• European and English speaking<br />
students: 320 hours.<br />
• Italian, Spanish and Portuguese<br />
speaking students: 160 hours. On<br />
request, these students may avoid<br />
the language prerequisite course<br />
submitting a certificate from a<br />
language school testifying the<br />
attendance to an Italian/Spanish<br />
course of at least 160 hours.<br />
• All other foreign students: 320 hours.<br />
Imme<strong>di</strong>ately prior to entrance,<br />
international students enrolled in<br />
<strong>three</strong>-year courses in the Italian or<br />
Spanish language are required to<br />
attend a compulsory Italian/Spanish<br />
language course.<br />
COMPULSORY COURSE<br />
PROGRAMME<br />
Students also attend a preparatory<br />
class in Italian/Spanish art and<br />
culture to achieve more advanced<br />
language skills and the ability to<br />
understand design subjects.<br />
• Period A: September 2010, for all<br />
participating students.<br />
• Period B: October 2010 - April<br />
2011, only for students who fail the<br />
examination at the end of Period A.<br />
Students must sit an entrance exam<br />
to appraise their language skills.<br />
Students will be <strong>di</strong>vided into groups<br />
accor<strong>di</strong>ng to their skills and will<br />
receive documents detailing the<br />
course schedule.<br />

IED offers services to students<br />
seeking apartments or housing in<br />
a residence. IED suggests students<br />
should first live in a residence<br />
and then later rent an apartment,<br />
sharing it with IED students.<br />
Residential hotels offer either<br />
single or double rooms with private<br />
bathroom, kitchenette, linen,<br />
towels and heating. The range of<br />
permanent housing available varies<br />
in Italy and Spain. Please see below<br />

PAYMENTS<br />
The following charges have to be<br />
paid accor<strong>di</strong>ng to the IED payment<br />
procedures. Remember that the<br />
admission process will only begin<br />
when payment of the enrolment fee<br />
has been received. Payments should<br />
be made <strong>di</strong>rectly to the chosen IED<br />
location.<br />
Once submitted the documents for<br />
applying, the enrolment fee should<br />
be paid by the following <strong>three</strong><br />
months (the time the place would<br />
be kept). If not IED assumes the<br />
can<strong>di</strong>date is no longer interested.<br />

the entire amount paid for first-year<br />
tuition. A refund will only be made<br />
if an official letter of withdrawal is<br />
received by the Student Information<br />
Office within the following time<br />

SPANISH LANGUAGE COURSE<br />
STUDENTS:<br />
Withdrawal by 22 August: you<br />
forfeit the enrolment fee (€ 2,000).<br />
Withdrawal by 2 September: you<br />
forfeit the enrolment fee plus the<br />
cost of the compulsory language<br />
course (€ 2,000 + € 1,750/€ 900).<br />
No refunds will be issued after<br />
these dates.<br />
Other students:<br />
Withdrawal by 30 September: you<br />
forfeit the enrolment fee.<br />
Withdrawal after 30 September: you<br />
forfeit the total fee.<br />
No refunds will be issued after<br />

Refund of the<br />
enrolment fee:<br />
The enrolment fee is not refundable<br />
except for Visa refusal (written<br />

General practical information<br />
Foreign students will be contacted by the<br />
Student Information Office (SIO) for the<br />
exact date of the Orientation Day at IED<br />
Milan.<br />
VISA<br />
All foreign students coming from non-<br />
EU countries must obtain a visa from the<br />
Italian/Spanish Consulate or from one of<br />
the Italian/Spanish <strong>di</strong>plomatic representatives<br />
in their countries of origin.<br />
DOCUMENTS YOU NEED<br />
TO OBTAIN A VISA:<br />
1. a valid passport<br />
2. your enrolment certificate (the declaration<br />
issued by <strong>Istituto</strong> <strong>Europeo</strong> <strong>di</strong> <strong>Design</strong><br />
in which the school guarantees that the<br />
student is duly enrolled)<br />
3. the con<strong>di</strong>tions of accommodation in<br />
Italy/Spain (residence or hotel reservation,<br />
rental of an apartment etc.)<br />
4. a consular statement concerning<br />
health care in Italy/Spain. Students<br />
must also prove that they have sufficient<br />
means of subsistence for their entire stay<br />
in Italy/Spain and to go back in their<br />
home country.<br />
Colombian students<br />
IED offers a free service through our<br />
partners in Colombia - Family Firm Consulting<br />
Ltda. They advise students about<br />
the necessary documentation and handle<br />
students’ visa applications with the Spanish<br />
consulate. This minimises the number<br />
of applications refused.<br />
RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR<br />
FOREIGN STUDENTS IN ITALY<br />
EU Students<br />
All EU students staying in Italy for a<br />
period longer than 3 months must apply<br />
for Registration at the City’s Office of<br />
the Municipality (Iscrizione Anagrafica)<br />
where the students live.<br />
PLEASE PREPARE THE<br />

1. Passport or ID (original + 1 copy)<br />
2. An original of the Certificate of enrolment<br />
from the <strong>Istituto</strong> <strong>Europeo</strong> <strong>di</strong> <strong>Design</strong><br />
with the in<strong>di</strong>cation of the length of course<br />
3. Sickness and accident insurance valid<br />
for the period of the course<br />
4. Tax File Number<br />
5. Proof of available means of support for<br />
the stay in Italy (no less than € 5,061.68)<br />
Non-EU students<br />
All foreign students who plan to study in<br />
Italy have to apply for a residence permit<br />
within 8 days of arriving in Italy. The application<br />
procedure and the vali<strong>di</strong>ty of<br />
the permit vary from country to country.<br />
In Italy, foreigners can now apply for and<br />
renew their residence permit (permesso<br />
<strong>di</strong> soggiorno) at the Post Office and then<br />
track the progress of their application online<br />
at www.portaleimmigrazione.it<br />

coverage from the Health Care Service<br />
in Italy:<br />
. An insurance policy from your home<br />
country with a declaration from the<br />
consulate that it is valid in Italy and a<br />
description of the duration and health<br />
service coverage provided, specifying<br />
that there are no limitations on the cost<br />
or a duration of an urgent hospitalisation.<br />
. Any other insurance that covers the<br />
same risk along with a declaration from<br />
the insurance company specifying that<br />
there are no limitations on the cost or the<br />
duration of an urgent hospitalisation.<br />
Returning your enrolment certificate<br />
RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR<br />
FOREIGN STUDENTS IN SPAIN<br />
All foreign Non-EU students must ensure that their IED enrolment<br />
certificate is duly signed and stamped by the embassy or consulate<br />
that issued their visa. This certificate must then be returned to IED<br />
before lectures commence.<br />
All foreign students who plan to study in<br />
Spain have to apply for a residence permit<br />
(Tarjeta de Residencia). The application<br />
procedure and the vali<strong>di</strong>ty of the<br />
permit vary from country to country and<br />
also with the motivation of the request.<br />
EU Students<br />
Students from the EU receive a residence<br />
permit valid for 5 years and renewable<br />
therafter. Please note that this does not<br />
depend in any way on economic activities.<br />

The residence permit for study purposes<br />
is valid from the beginning until the end<br />
of the course, usually no more than one<br />
year. The permit is issued by the local<br />
police.<br />

2. Your passport, together with two copies<br />
of the pages with the stamp issued<br />
by the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in<br />
the student’s home country and with the<br />
stamp of the date of arrival in the Schengen<br />
Area of the EU from the immigration<br />
authorities at the airport<br />
3. Documents regar<strong>di</strong>ng your current address<br />
in Spain: a rental contract or any<br />
other declaration.<br />

5. Sickness and accident insurance, so as<br />
to be able to benefit from the Health Service<br />
