Community of LEARNING / Talmud Torah SCHOOL NEWS by Judith T. Fox, Director of Education As we begin to look forward to spring it is also time for 7th Graders in Religious School and 8th Graders in Day School to begin considering their next steps in Jewish education. I invite you to consider Beit Sefer Tichon as the next step. Beit Sefer Tichon is the high school program of The Emanuel Synagogue. We meet on Sunday mornings at The Emanuel Synagogue from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and offer a stimulating variety of required and elective courses. Excellent teachers who genuinely care about meeting the special needs of Jewish high school students present these courses. Students who attend Jewish Teen Learning Connection (our community high school) in addition to Beit Sefer Tichon receive a subsidy from The Emanuel Synagogue. Parents of middle school students are encouraged to arrange to observe Beit Sefer Tichon classes. Interested students are invited to observe if they wish. April 7 – Grade 6 & 7 Family Program – Yom HaShoah – Holocaust commemoration April 28 – Bagels, Blocks and Beyond – Preschool – Lag BaOmer ADULT EDUCATION NEWS FROM JUDAH MACCABEE TO RABBI JUDAH THE PRINCE: JEWISH AND CLASSICAL CIVILIZATION IN COOPERATION AND CONFLICT March 14, 28, and April 11 at 7:30 p.m. Facilitator: Dr. Jeffrey Kaimowitz What do historical sources say about the origins of Hanukah and the revolt against Antiochus? Who was Antiochus and why was he called Epiphanes? What happened to the Jews when Judah Maccabee was killed in battle? What High Priests were also Jewish kings? What do some major Roman authors have to say about the Jews? What non-practicing Jew was a Roman procurator? What Roman emperor fell in love with a Jewish princess? How do we know that Bar Kokhba was not really named Bar Kokhba? What Roman Emperor helped to revive Judaism? What was the administrative language of Palestine during this period and what influence did it have on Jewish literature? Find out the answers to these questions and much more about this pivotal era in Jewish history in a three session course to be taught at The Emanuel. Enrollment for the course is limited to 15.
