Recent Brotherhood Programs
We had a fascinating presentation for the month of January.
Ken Simon introduced us to his friend and colleague
Patrick Culligan, Chief Public Defender for the capital
Defense and Trial Service unit for the State of Connecticut.
Mr. Culligan spoke about his career defending those
accused of a capital felony. He also discussed the recent
work of the Innocence Project involving cases of false confessions
and where DNA evidence would later exonerate
the defendants. Mr. Culligan spoke about the 1992 trial
when he represented Richard Lapointe. It is Mr. Culligan’s
belief that Richard Lapointe was wrongfully convicted.
Richard Lapointe is currently in prison awaiting a new trial
ordered by the State Appellate last October.
Brotherhood Catering Service
Some of our members are not aware that the Brotherhood,
under the direction of master cook Saul Shemkovitz, prepares
some of the finest food delights for Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Kiddush spreads and many other occasions in the synagogue.
Our kugel, egg salad and tuna salad are the most
scrumptious tasting in West Hartford. The bookings for
this year are going fast, so if you have an event coming up,
please send an email to Saul at sshemkov@gmail.com or
call him at (860) 280-1457 for menus and prices. All food
preparation is done in-house and proceeds benefit the shul.
Are you a Brotherhood member?
If you are, we welcome you back for another great year! If
not, please consider becoming one today. Have you become
a new member of the Emanuel within the last six months?
If so, your first year of Brotherhood membership is free.
The Emanuel Brotherhood recently earned the Federation
of Jewish Men’s Club “QUALITY CLUB AWARD”
in recognition of planning and executing great programs
and supporting the FJMC national mission. By joining the
Brotherhood, you too can become part of this dynamic
organization and also enjoy the benefits of a participant,
including the fostering of interpersonal relationships which
could have a positive impact on your job and at home
