had to provide my availability six months in
advance. Those little heart beats labeled me as
a “high-risk” pregnancy, which meant no more
travel. Also, three months prior to my due date,
I’d need to stop working altogether.
Did these new challenges mean that I had to
give up public speaking and coaching? Not at
all. We just made adjustments. I was able to
have it all, just not all at once. Now, four years
later, my twins are headed to preschool and
I’ve got plenty of speaking engagements and
coaching clients.

In my twenty-five plus years experience in the
workforce, I’ve seen many dreams die due to
misplaced motives. Let me give a gentle warning
here. Is the goal of your dream to achieve
money, fame, or power? Author and speaker
John Ortberg states, “For many, careers become
the altar on which people sacrifice their lives.”
While material wealth and notoriety may be a
by-product of following your passions, if these
are your sole motivations, you’ll sacrifice your
life on that “career altar.”
