Dr.ALM.Post Graduate Institute <strong>of</strong> Basic Medical<br />

Sciences was started in the year 1969 by one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Doyen <strong>of</strong> Medical education in the country<br />

Sir.Dr. A. Lakshmanasamy Mudaliar. His aim was to<br />

develop research in basic medical sciences in the<br />

State. The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacology</strong> <strong>and</strong> Environmental<br />

Toxicology established in 1976, is involved in<br />

the promotion <strong>of</strong> academic <strong>and</strong> research activities in<br />

both the disciplines.<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> started <strong>of</strong>fering M.Sc., Environmental<br />

Toxicology, an Interdisciplinary Course in the<br />

year 1982, first <strong>of</strong> its kind in Asia, the budding branch<br />

<strong>of</strong> Science during that period. The Objective <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Course is to train manpower in the field <strong>of</strong> Toxicology,<br />

. Since then active Teaching <strong>and</strong> research in various<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> Environmental Toxicology such as Principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> Toxicology, aquatic Toxicology, Pesticide<br />

Toxicology, Food Toxicology, Industrial toxicology,<br />

Forensic toxicology, Drug Toxicology, Reproductive<br />

toxicology, Neuro Toxicology, Principles <strong>of</strong> Marine<br />

Bioactive Compounds <strong>and</strong> related practical courses<br />

are being <strong>of</strong> held. Presently it <strong>of</strong>fers M.Sc., Toxicology.<br />

The Curriculum was developed <strong>and</strong> periodically<br />

upgraded to meet the emerging needs in this field <strong>of</strong><br />

specialization. As a recognition for the research <strong>and</strong><br />

teaching activities, UGC recognized our <strong>Department</strong><br />

in the year 2004 for UGC-SAP <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Department</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Science <strong>and</strong> Technology Considered our <strong>Department</strong><br />

for funding under FIST programme. In the Year<br />

2009 our <strong>Department</strong> was upgraded to UGC SAP<br />

(II)– DRS (PHASE-II) Programme.<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> is also recognized under DST<br />

purse programme under which this National<br />

Seminar Cum Workshop on “Assessment<br />

techniques in Toxicology” will be conducted on<br />

26th March 2013.<br />

Seminar <strong>and</strong> Workshop components include<br />

1. Identification <strong>of</strong> Toxicants<br />

2. Quantification <strong>of</strong> toxicants.<br />

3. Heavy metals as toxicants <strong>and</strong> their quantification<br />

4. Biological assessment in toxicity prediction.<br />
