Admissions Procedures and Policy (for entry to Sutton Grammar School in 2013)
How to apply to enter Sutton Grammar School
Please read this document carefully. The first part tells you how we will determine your child’s suitability for
a selective school to assist you to make choices when completing <strong>the</strong> Pan London Common Application From
(<strong>CAF</strong>). The second part tells you how we will allocate places at Sutton Grammar School.
Determining selective ability
For entry into Year 7 in September 2013, boys must first pass <strong>the</strong> Common Eligibility Test to be taken on
Saturday 6th October 2012. The result of this test determines suitability for <strong>the</strong> following selective schools:
Sutton Grammar School and Greenshaw High School (selective stream). To register your son to take this
test you must complete <strong>the</strong> Supplementary Form which you can access and complete on-line via a link from
<strong>the</strong> website of ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> participating schools.
Whe<strong>the</strong>r completed on-line or returned by post <strong>the</strong> supplementary form must reach ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong>
participating schools by Friday 21st September 2012. Candidates will be notified of <strong>the</strong> test centre <strong>the</strong>y
should attend on Saturday 6th October 2012. The results of <strong>the</strong> test will be applicable for both Sutton
Grammar School and <strong>the</strong> selective stream at Greenshaw High School.
The Common Eligibility Test for Year 7 comprises two multiple-choice style tests – a reasoning test and a
literacy test.
Parents will be informed of <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong> Common Eligibility Test by 11 th October 2012. This will confirm
whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong> candidate could be eligible for a selective place at a participating school. The result of
this test will not guarantee a place at ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> participating schools but shows that <strong>the</strong> student is at or
very close to <strong>the</strong> standard required. This information will allow <strong>the</strong> candidate’s parents time to make an
informed choice of schools when completing <strong>the</strong> <strong>CAF</strong> prior to 31st October 2012.
Sutton Grammar School
The School’s Standard Admission Number for year 7 is 120, to include any boys with statements of special
educational need who meet <strong>the</strong> School’s Admission Standard and for whom Sutton Grammar School is <strong>the</strong>
named school on <strong>the</strong>ir statement; and to include any boys who are looked after by a local authority and
meet <strong>the</strong> School’s Admission Standard.
The Admissions Standard and <strong>the</strong> rank order of applicants will be determined in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> results
of additional tests, which can only be taken by eligible boys, to be held on 17th November 2012.
Parents still wishing <strong>the</strong>ir son to be considered for a place at Sutton Grammar School must confirm this by
Wednesday 31st October so that arrangements can be made for <strong>the</strong> second stage of testing on Saturday
17th November 2012.
Sutton Grammar School is part of <strong>the</strong> Pan London co-ordinated admissions scheme. You must
complete a <strong>CAF</strong> issued by your Local Authority. If you live in London or Surrey you can access and complete
<strong>the</strong> <strong>CAF</strong> on-line at www.eadmissions.org.uk
To make valid application for Sutton Grammar School parents must:
• name Sutton Grammar School on <strong>the</strong> <strong>CAF</strong>;
• ensure your son attends <strong>the</strong> second stage test on Saturday 17th November 2012.
Only boys who have passed <strong>the</strong> Common Eligibility Test will be eligible for <strong>the</strong> second stage of testing and
possible admission. The second round of tests will test <strong>the</strong> core subjects of English and maths. The total
score of all <strong>the</strong> multiple choice items on <strong>the</strong> eligibility test will be standardised and adjusted for age. The
raw scores from <strong>the</strong> first stage tests will be carried forward and combined with <strong>the</strong> scores from <strong>the</strong> second
stage tests. Three standardised scores will be calculated using (1) all <strong>the</strong> multiple choice items from <strong>the</strong>
eligibility tests, (2) <strong>the</strong> English paper in <strong>the</strong> second stage test and (3) <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics paper in <strong>the</strong> second

stage test. The three standardised, age-adjusted scores will be weighted in <strong>the</strong> ratio 4:3:3 and rounded to
<strong>the</strong> nearest four marks. In previous years this rounding has resulted in about 30-50 boys, from an entry of
about 1500 boys, being on <strong>the</strong> same rounded score around <strong>the</strong> cut-off score. Boys on <strong>the</strong> same rounded
score are ranked according to <strong>the</strong> distance criterion, with those living nearest <strong>the</strong> school being given
priority.
How does <strong>the</strong> Sutton Grammar determine which boys receive offers?
Parents must have named Sutton Grammar School on <strong>the</strong> <strong>CAF</strong> and <strong>the</strong> boy must have taken <strong>the</strong> additional
tests on Saturday 17 th November.
The following criteria will apply, in <strong>the</strong> order set out below, to decide which boys who achieve <strong>the</strong> Admission
Standard to admit.
1. Boys who are looked after by a local authority. Supporting evidence of <strong>the</strong> status will be required.
2. Rank order of <strong>the</strong> scores in <strong>the</strong> selection tests.
3. Proximity of boy’s home from <strong>the</strong> school (where scores are equal).
As <strong>the</strong> scores are rounded to <strong>the</strong> nearest four marks <strong>the</strong>re will usually be several boys with <strong>the</strong> same final
score. Where <strong>the</strong> admission of all of <strong>the</strong>se would exceed <strong>the</strong> number of places available, places will be
allocated by proximity of <strong>the</strong> boy’s home (measured in a straight line) to <strong>the</strong> front door of <strong>the</strong> School. All
distances will be measured using a computerised Geographical Information System maintained by Sutton
LA.
If a boy who meets <strong>the</strong> Admissions Standard is not offered a place for September 2013 because <strong>the</strong> School
is full, he will remain on <strong>the</strong> waiting list until 31st December 2013. If a vacancy arises within that period, <strong>the</strong>
next eligible boy will be offered a place at <strong>the</strong> school without having to sit a fur<strong>the</strong>r test.
Result of Test and Offer of Places
Offers will only be determined after <strong>the</strong> boy has taken <strong>the</strong> second test on Saturday 17th November 2012.
You will be informed of <strong>the</strong> school place offered to your son in a letter from your home local authority and
this will be posted on 1st March 2013. On 4th March 2013 we shall send you details about <strong>the</strong> results of all
<strong>the</strong> selection tests covering <strong>the</strong> second stage tests taken in November and <strong>the</strong> status of <strong>the</strong> your son’s
application.
Late Admission for Years 7 – 11
Applications for boys to join <strong>the</strong> school at o<strong>the</strong>r times are welcome. Admission tests will only be held if a
place is available and <strong>the</strong>se will be used to determine that boys are of selective ability. Places will be offered
to <strong>the</strong> highest-ranking boys in <strong>the</strong> tests who meet <strong>the</strong> required standard. Boys will not be re-tested for a
place in <strong>the</strong> same academic year. Applications for mid-term admissions and waiting lists will be managed in
accordance with Sutton’s coordinated scheme for mid-term admissions.
Sixth Form Entry
Applications may be made by a parent or prospective student. At sixth form level, all boys must meet a
minimum level of overall success at GCSE. Entry is based on competitive grades and all candidates must
pass at least eight GCSEs (Grades A*-C) including English, ma<strong>the</strong>matics and a science. Four of <strong>the</strong>se
subjects must be at a minimum of grade A and a fur<strong>the</strong>r two at a minimum of grade B. Grades A* or A are
usually required in <strong>the</strong> subjects to be studied at A-level. Priority will be given to boys already at <strong>the</strong> School.
The anticipated capacity of <strong>the</strong> sixth form is 130 students in Year 12. A minimum of ten places will be
offered annually to external candidates in <strong>the</strong> form of conditional offers which will be made before <strong>the</strong> end
of year 11. More places may be available depending upon <strong>the</strong> number of students transferring from <strong>the</strong>
school’s Year 11. Places will be determined by <strong>the</strong> rank order of expected or actual examination results and
are subject to <strong>the</strong> availability of places in individual subjects. Fuller detail is published in <strong>the</strong> sixth form
