How to apply to enter Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
Please read this document carefully. The first part tells you how we will determine your child’s suitability for<br />
a selective school to assist you to make choices when completing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pan L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> Comm<strong>on</strong> Applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> From<br />
(<str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g>). The sec<strong>on</strong>d part tells you how we will alloc<strong>at</strong>e places <strong>at</strong> Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
Determining selective ability<br />
For entry into Year 7 in September 2013, boys must first pass <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Comm<strong>on</strong> Eligibility Test to be taken <strong>on</strong><br />
S<strong>at</strong>urday 6th October 2012. The result of this test determines suitability for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following selective schools:<br />
Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> and Greenshaw High <strong>School</strong> (selective stream). To register your s<strong>on</strong> to take this<br />
test you must complete <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Supplementary Form which you can access and complete <strong>on</strong>-<strong>line</strong> via a link from<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> website of ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> particip<strong>at</strong>ing schools.<br />
Whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r completed <strong>on</strong>-<strong>line</strong> or returned by post <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> supplementary form must reach ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ing schools by Friday 21st September 2012. Candid<strong>at</strong>es will be notified of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> test centre <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />
should <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>on</strong> S<strong>at</strong>urday 6th October 2012. The results of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> test will be applicable for both Sutt<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> selective stream <strong>at</strong> Greenshaw High <strong>School</strong>.<br />
The Comm<strong>on</strong> Eligibility Test for Year 7 comprises two multiple-choice style tests – a reas<strong>on</strong>ing test and a<br />
literacy test.<br />
Parents will be informed of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> result of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Comm<strong>on</strong> Eligibility Test by 11 th October 2012. This will c<strong>on</strong>firm<br />
whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r or not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> candid<strong>at</strong>e could be eligible for a selective place <strong>at</strong> a particip<strong>at</strong>ing school. The result of<br />
this test will not guarantee a place <strong>at</strong> ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> particip<strong>at</strong>ing schools but shows th<strong>at</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> student is <strong>at</strong> or<br />
very close to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> standard required. This inform<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> will allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> candid<strong>at</strong>e’s parents time to make an<br />
informed choice of schools when completing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g> prior to 31st October 2012.<br />
Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
The <strong>School</strong>’s Standard Admissi<strong>on</strong> Number for year 7 is 120, to include any boys with st<strong>at</strong>ements of special<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al need who meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>School</strong>’s Admissi<strong>on</strong> Standard and for whom Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
named school <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir st<strong>at</strong>ement; and to include any boys who are looked after by a local authority and<br />
meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>School</strong>’s Admissi<strong>on</strong> Standard.<br />
The Admissi<strong>on</strong>s Standard and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rank order of applicants will be determined in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results<br />
of additi<strong>on</strong>al tests, which can <strong>on</strong>ly be taken by eligible boys, to be held <strong>on</strong> 17th November 2012.<br />
Parents still wishing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir s<strong>on</strong> to be c<strong>on</strong>sidered for a place <strong>at</strong> Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> must c<strong>on</strong>firm this by<br />
Wednesday 31st October so th<strong>at</strong> arrangements can be made for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage of testing <strong>on</strong> S<strong>at</strong>urday<br />
17th November 2012.<br />
Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> is part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pan L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> co-ordin<strong>at</strong>ed admissi<strong>on</strong>s scheme. You must<br />
complete a <str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g> issued by your Local Authority. If you live in L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> or Surrey you can access and complete<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>-<strong>line</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>www</strong>.eadmissi<strong>on</strong>s.<strong>org</strong>.<strong>uk</strong><br />
To make valid applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> for Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> parents must:<br />
• name Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g>;<br />
• ensure your s<strong>on</strong> <strong>at</strong>tends <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage test <strong>on</strong> S<strong>at</strong>urday 17th November 2012.<br />
Only boys who have passed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Comm<strong>on</strong> Eligibility Test will be eligible for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage of testing and<br />
possible admissi<strong>on</strong>. The sec<strong>on</strong>d round of tests will test <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> core subjects of English and m<strong>at</strong>hs. The total<br />
score of all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> multiple choice items <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eligibility test will be standardised and adjusted for age. The<br />
raw scores from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first stage tests will be carried forward and combined with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scores from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />
stage tests. Three standardised scores will be calcul<strong>at</strong>ed using (1) all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> multiple choice items from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
eligibility tests, (2) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> English paper in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage test and (3) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>at</strong>ics paper in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d
stage test. The three standardised, age-adjusted scores will be weighted in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> r<strong>at</strong>io 4:3:3 and rounded to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nearest four marks. In previous years this rounding has resulted in about 30-50 boys, from an entry of<br />
about 1500 boys, being <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same rounded score around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cut-off score. Boys <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same rounded<br />
score are ranked according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distance criteri<strong>on</strong>, with those living nearest <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school being given<br />
priority.<br />
How does <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> determine which boys receive offers?<br />
Parents must have named Sutt<strong>on</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CAF</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boy must have taken <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />
tests <strong>on</strong> S<strong>at</strong>urday 17 th November.<br />
The following criteria will apply, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> order set out below, to decide which boys who achieve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Admissi<strong>on</strong><br />
Standard to admit.<br />
1. Boys who are looked after by a local authority. Supporting evidence of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>at</strong>us will be required.<br />
2. Rank order of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scores in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> selecti<strong>on</strong> tests.<br />
3. Proximity of boy’s home from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school (where scores are equal).<br />
As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scores are rounded to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nearest four marks <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re will usually be several boys with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same final<br />
score. Where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> admissi<strong>on</strong> of all of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se would exceed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number of places available, places will be<br />
alloc<strong>at</strong>ed by proximity of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boy’s home (measured in a straight <strong>line</strong>) to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>t door of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>School</strong>. All<br />
distances will be measured using a computerised Geographical Inform<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> System maintained by Sutt<strong>on</strong><br />
LA.<br />
If a boy who meets <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Admissi<strong>on</strong>s Standard is not offered a place for September 2013 because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>School</strong><br />
is full, he will remain <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> waiting list until 31st December 2013. If a vacancy arises within th<strong>at</strong> period, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
next eligible boy will be offered a place <strong>at</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school without having to sit a fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r test.<br />
Result of Test and Offer of Places<br />
Offers will <strong>on</strong>ly be determined after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boy has taken <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d test <strong>on</strong> S<strong>at</strong>urday 17th November 2012.<br />
You will be informed of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school place offered to your s<strong>on</strong> in a letter from your home local authority and<br />
this will be posted <strong>on</strong> 1st March 2013. On 4th March 2013 we shall send you details about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results of all<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> selecti<strong>on</strong> tests covering <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage tests taken in November and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>at</strong>us of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> your s<strong>on</strong>’s<br />
applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>.<br />
L<strong>at</strong>e Admissi<strong>on</strong> for Years 7 – 11<br />
Applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s for boys to join <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school <strong>at</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r times are welcome. Admissi<strong>on</strong> tests will <strong>on</strong>ly be held if a<br />
place is available and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se will be used to determine th<strong>at</strong> boys are of selective ability. Places will be offered<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest-ranking boys in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tests who meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> required standard. Boys will not be re-tested for a<br />
place in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same academic year. Applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s for mid-term admissi<strong>on</strong>s and waiting lists will be managed in<br />
