Nurses make a difference, one life at a time
Nursing career opportunities are abundant, from hospital and office practice to
government, school nursing, nurse practitioners and nurse attorneys, the list is long
and varied.
The number of jobs for registered nurses is expected to show the second largest
growth among all occupations over the next few years. Careers in nursing allow
flexibility in employment settings and schedules. Great nurses exhibit empathy,
tolerance, and strong organizational, well-developed critical thinking, and excellent
communication skills.
Average salaries nationwide, based on 2008 statistics from salary.com:
• Practical nurses—The median salary was $39,121.
• Registered nurses—The median salary was $61,603.
At SFCC, active learning takes place in fully multimedia classrooms equipped with
SMART board technology and e-instruction. Students have access to a wide variety
of computer software in the dedicated allied health computer lab. All courses are Web
enabled using the SFCC Online learning management system. Our METI and STAN
Human Patient Simulators, allows students to develop and improve their critical
decision making skills in a real life setting. Nursing faculty either hold or are pursuing
master’s degrees in nursing.
The nursing program is a bi-level program that prepares you to complete the
requirements for Practical Nursing after the first year (Level 1) and the requirements
for Associate Degree Nursing after the second year (Level 2). This competencybased
bi-level curriculum allows you to transition seamlessly from Practical Nursing
to Associate Degree Nursing. The program requires students to maintain a high
academic standard.
At the completion of Level 1, students apply to the Missouri State Board of Nursing
(MSBN) for the NCLEX-PN licensure exam for practical nursing. At the end of Level
2, students apply to the MSBN to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam for registered
nursing.** Completion of these programs does not guarantee eligibility to take the
licensure exams.
SFCC’s program has full approval status by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
Students may continue their education for a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN)
or higher at Central Methodist University (classes are held on the SFCC campus);
the University of Central Missouri (online degree); or at the University of Missouri-
Columbia.
Admission to all allied health programs at SFCC is competitive, and each program
requires an additional admission application. Nursing application packets contain
admission criteria, essential abilities for admission, state licensure requirements,
