Beaumaris Theatre
Welcome to another year of wonderful theatre at Beaumaris.
I certainly hope you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable
festive season. For some I know it has been adventurefilled,
and that is what 2011 is turning out to be here at the
theatre. One can never rely on carefully made plans in this
life it seems! We finished 2010 with a wonderful celebration
at our Talbot Awards of a hugely successful year. Our
first production for 2011, An Evening at Beaumaris Theatre,
had been cast and the first set build had been scheduled
for January. To prepare well in advance we had also auditioned
for our second production, Cinderella. So we all
went our separate ways to celebrate and holiday with our
families and friends, taking a break from theatre activities
for a month or so. Most theatre companies take a break
at this time, so for some “theatre addicts” the days of relaxing
and having time to do the washing and cleaning began
to drag a little. Comments such as “I don’t know what to
do. I’m not rehearsing for anything till February. I can’t
wait till rehearsals start again” were heard. BE CAREFUL
WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!! It began to rain in Queensland. I
would never say that the two were connected, but suddenly
it was all “go” again. Danny Forward has been the main
instigator behind the idea of re-staging I Love You, You’re
Perfect, Now Change as a fund raiser for the flood appeal,
but we have all immediately leapt in to action to make it
happen. One week after the idea was first mooted it has all
been arranged. The set build schedule has been reorganised.
The date of the AGM has been changed to allow
for one of the performances. Negotiations with Directors
Leah Osburn and Debbie Keyt have allowed more rehearsals
for I Love You to be slotted in. An email was sent
at midnight to Malcolm Flitman requesting tickets to be
printed for the two performances—they were on my doorstep
by lunchtime the next day. Lighting that had been
taken down and put away has now been re-rigged. Costumes
are back in the dressing rooms. Props are back on
the prop shelves. Andrea Bashfield is organising hampers
to raffle, and our generous patrons are donating really lovely
items to fill them. Advertising has gone out through multiple
channels, and tickets are selling fast already. I am so
pleased and so impressed at what the Beaumaris Theatre
community can do. I know this show is the best way we
can help those who have suffered and lost so much
through the floods.
At the same time rehearsals are continuing for An Evening
at Beaumaris Theatre, a cabaret that will be staged on four
nights only. When there is so much “real life” drama and
struggle going on in the world around us, a night of song,
music and dance is just what is needed. Artistic Director
Leah Osburn has assembled a truly talented cast (see
elsewhere in this newsletter for their names and more details
of the show). I am really looking forward to seeing
this show—it is something a little different to anything
Beaumaris Theatre has done before, but it is part of our
commitment to providing a variety of high quality entertainment
to you, our patrons. An Evening at Beaumaris Theatre,
is another cabaret-style seating show (at tables) so do
please bring along your own drinks, nibbles and glasses.
All tickets for this production will be $20 each, no concessions,
as we plan to allocate the profits to the purchase of
permanent raked seating for the theatre.
Concurrently we are building a new proscenium arch to
frame our stage and the wonderful new mechanically operated
curtains that were installed towards the end of
2010. We had a working bee today that made major inroads
into the cleaning and tidying that needed doing. We
have a busy maintenance plan for 2011 that Bayside
Council don’t know about yet, but hopefully they will be
helping with. I think our summer break is now over, don’t
you?
One last thing—a plea I make every year. PLEASE do not
leave your bookings till the last minute for any show at
Beaumaris, or you will miss out on tickets.
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD BEHIND THE SCENES TO BRING OUR SHOWS TO YOU. DEBBIE KEYT
PUT TOGETHER A FEW “IN DEPTH” QUESTIONS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LEAH OSBURN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR &
CHOREOGRAPHER OF OUR NEXT SHOW - AN EVENING AT BEAUMARIS THEATRE.
My greatest hope is…that my life continues to be blessed and joyful.
My earliest theatrical memory…The Trolley Song. it was my first competitive
jazz solo. Mainly due to the fact that mum made my costume and sewed a
pin into the costume so whenever I put the costume on we usually had both
forgotten and I always got scratched by the pin. It’s never happened again
thank goodness.
My mother always told me…the list is endless and repetitive because I’m not
very good at listening
I would time travel to…June 25 2011 and make sure my wedding day is
amazing and if it isn’t come back and make sure it is.
The website I visit most…is Facebook because I am Generation Y
The best book I have read is…Green Eggs and Ham, Dr Seuss because…it’s the only book I can remember
reading.
I wish I had…more time so I can do all the things I wish to achieve in a week but still have a relaxing weekend
and get 8 hours sleep a night.
I wish I hadn’t…booked myself up so much artistically that I won’t be performing myself in 2011 – so far.
My best theatrical memory…Rock Eisteddfod 2003 finals, coming out for my solo and having the whole of the
Rod Laver erupt in cheering was amazing.
My most treasured possession… my phone; I don’t use it as much as a few years ago but it is still a vital part
of my life.
The funniest thing that ever happened to me on stage…is having my tap shoes on the wrong feet for
Jennyanydots in MLOC’s cats and trying to wing time steps.
I would like to be remembered for….my talents and not my flaws
ING. DEBBIE KEYT THANKS THOSE WHO HELPED OUT DURING I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE .
I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change was a sell out
sensation which means our ticket secretary, front of
house coordinator, box office and front of house staff
were kept extremely busy.
Rhonda Vaughan took on the role of ticket secretary for
the first time and did so admirably whilst juggling her full
time job as a school teacher during the always frantic
fourth term. We thank Rhonda wholeheartedly for keeping
everyone happy, where possible, and managing the
masses with efficiency, good organisation and a happy
disposition. Bernadette Kinsella coordinated our front of
house workers, which is not as easy as it sounds but she
handled it superbly and we are most grateful for all her
time and efforts.
Thanks for the support of all our hospitable, friendly front
of house and box office team. We would be nothing
I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE PERFORMED TO FULL HOUSES AND RAVE REVIEWS
LAST YEAR. HERE IS WHAT THEATRE PEOPLE THOUGHT OF THE SHOW.
Beaumaris Theatre Inc.Musical Theatre
Reviewer: Katrina Vinck
Date of Show: Sunday, 21st Nov 2010
Event: I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE
Venue: Beaumaris Theatre Wells Rd
"...one truth is eternal. All ye good people of earth, go forth with joy,
find someone to love, someone you think is perfect; then spend the
rest of your life trying to change them."
And what about the awkward first date? Falling in love? Marriage?
Children? Making it work? Starting over again? Joe Di Pietro and
Jimmy Robert's narrative musical I Love You, You're Perfect, Now
Change is an hilarious and tender series of snap shots showing the
ups and downs of relationships.
When you walk into Beaumaris Theatre, you can immediately see
how well the team understands the intimacy of the production. The
cabaret style seating of tables and chairs is decorated in a pink and
purple colour theme with hearts, candles and romantic centre pieces.
It reminds you of Valentine's Day. This colour theme was also
cleverly continued in parts of the lighting and costume designs.
The curtains open on a minimal set designed by Danny Forward
and assisted by Chris Churchward. It is an intricate silhouette cityscape
against colourful morphing backgrounds and a
‘band’ (consisting of keyboard and violin) on a rear centre platform.
Initially I thought this musician placement would be distracting, but
they seemed to fade when the scenes were played out and gave a
nice point of focal continuity during the scene changes. This was
enhanced further by the lighting choice during these changes, a
sultry red, which really emphasised the cabaret feel.
The limited performance space was utilised effectively, with appropriate
set pieces being brought on and off seamlessly by the cast.
Each piece fit snugly within the fixed landscape and changed the
atmosphere for each story being told. An innovative touch was the
bed for Satisfaction Guaranteed, which folds into what could easily
be used as a bar. Similarly each prop by Lorraine Ellis and her crew
fitted naturally into the scenes and were used purposefully.
The lighting design by Alan Crispin and assistant Rita Crispin is a
rainbow of colour and warmth, with just a sprinkle of seduction or
iciness where needed. There were times the rear illumination of the
cityscape was ‘flicked’ through rather than being a smooth transition,
which was momentarily distracting, but the overall result was great.
There was also a good use of spotlighting for solos, soliloquies and
stage separation. The television glow in Waiting Trio and the matching
of colour to costumes or mood were particularly noteworthy.
The mammoth task of designing and co-ordinating costumes was
tackled with finesse by Jenni Osborn and her able troop. Each character
requires an entirely new outfit which often to be changed within
30 seconds or less. Not once did she miss a beat in style, colour
or era. Watch for the matching outfits in Why? ‘Cause I’m a Guy and
the charming dress in Always A Bridesmaid which are lovely features.
I Love You… is written for four performers to embody multiple characters
of varying ages in different stages of relationships. The cast of
Damien Calvert, Jodie Symes, Jamie Burgess and Courtney Smyth
could not have been chosen any better. Not only are they all individually
talented, but they worked cohesively together.
Damien is charming in all his performances from a Frank Spenceresque
nerd, to a Play School style new father, right through to a
lovable elderly man. Each character flowed out with its own special
appeal. Specific mention goes to his work the ‘Teddy’ in The Baby
Song.
Jodie is the strongest vocalist of the cast. She is not the most fluid
mover, but she does give the most natural and honest characterisations.
It was particularly lovely to watch her as Julie in A Stud and A
Babe and Whatever Happened To Baby’s Parents? , where her wonderful
comic timing is displayed. However, Jodie’s more affecting
performances were given in I Will Be Loved Tonight and the monologue
The Very First Dating Video Of Rose Ritz , where the emotion
you feel rippling off her is captivating.
Jamie gave some great portrayals throughout the show. I would
have liked to have seen him embrace his characters a little more
fully, given the amount of commitment each of the other performers
had to theirs. But he was consistent and utterly entertaining. He was
especially notable as Father in Hey There, Single Gal/Guy and Husband
in Marriage Tango; The latter of which you could feel the sexual
tension radiating from the stage. But it was his tender, loving Husband
in Shouldn’t I Be Less In Love With You that really touched the
hearts of the audience.
Courtney is easily the stand out performer in the bunch. Whilst she
is not the strongest vocally, she is a dynamic character and comedic
actress. You cannot help but shift focus to her every time she walks
on stage. She has superb expression and a commanding presence.
An audience favourite was Always A Bridesmaid, and it is worth
watching for her exasperation in Hey There, Single Gal/Guy.
The highlight of the show for me was I Can Live With That, with Damien
and Courtney as elderly widows from two different walks of life,
eternally in love with their passed spouses but trying to find some
fleeting joy with each other. It genuinely brought tears to my eyes.
The cast were ably supported by sound operator Brian Uniake. Only
overhead microphones were used for vocals and simple amplification
of the musicians gave a crisp overall result, which was refreshing.
It is the mark of a true team when you cannot see where direction
ends and choreography begins, nor seams between dialogue and
music. Danny Forward (as Co-Director/Musical Director), Lorraine
Ellis (Co-Director) and Louisa Mitchell (Choreographer) have produced
a production without flaws. The minimal dance movement was
simple and refined, directed gestures were appropriate, entrances
and exits were clean, vocal pitch and dynamics were polished and
the soliloquies were inclusive. I particularly enjoyed the use of desk
chairs in On The Highway Of Love as moving as a car.
Additionally, there was a ‘book end’ approach used that was insightful
and made the show flow consistently. This was achieved through
the dogmatic Prologue and Epilogue with the robes and the caketopper
of the Act I Finale and Act I Entr’acte.
I was also impressed by the music provided by Danny on keyboard
and Anne Beruldsen on Violin. There is a bass accompaniment written
in the score for I Love You… which was not used in this case. It
was surprising wasn’t missed at all. The swell of sound coming from
these two musicians was outstanding and enjoyable to listen to. The
violin/keyboard dual was also a bit of fun.
It is well worth the trip down to the sea-side suburb of Beaumaris to
see this phenomenal show. It is not to be missed. You won’t be disappointed.

A FEW WEEKS BACK THE RAIN STARTED TO FALL IN PARTS OF EASTERN AUSTRALIA, LEADING
TO TERRIBLE FLOODS FIRST IN QUEENSLAND, THEN NSW, AND NOW VICTORIA. BEAUMARIS
THEATRE WANTS TO HELP. JANINE CHUGG REVEALS WHAT WE HAVE DECIDED TO DO.
Whenever some sort of emergency hits Australians,
whether it be fire, cyclones, earthquakes, floods or
whatever else is hurled at us, it is wonderful to see
how we rally around to help each other. So many
people are contributing whatever skills and material
goods they can at this time. 200 cleaners were sent
from Sydney and allocated houses in Queensland to
assist the owners to clean up after the waters subsided.
Neighbours who have never previously spoken
to each other have spent hours together filling sandbags.
All sorts of fundraising activities are going on
right across the country. Beaumaris Theatre immediately
asked the questions “What can we do? What
would be the most effective use of our skills to
help?” The answer was that we could raise as much
money as possible, to be used by those “in the
know” in the most effective manner. We have had
many requests to put on more performances of I
Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, but we had
thought the old adage of “Leave them wanting
more” was best. However because we knew we
could definitely sell seats to this show so that it
would make the most amount of money in a short
time, the set was still there, and the cast and crew
were available, it became very obvious that restaging
this show was a great idea. To this end we are
announcing two more performances of I Love You,
You’re Perfect, Now Change on Friday February
11th and Saturday February 12th, at 8pm. Tickets
are $30 each, we will be raffling some hampers, and
all proceeds will go to the Australian Flood Relief.
Seating will once again be at tables, so please bring
along your own drinks nibbles and glasses. There is
a dedicated phone number for bookings for this
show—9584 5086.
We sincerely thank Clearlight Shows for their generous
donation of lighting for this cause. We have
negotiated with Origin Theatricals to waive the fees
for the rights to perform - they were very keen to
help and applied successfully to the US for this. The
composer of the show, James Roberts, wrote from the
US to Danny Forward telling him he waived his rights
to any fees in support of our fundraising efforts.
And I take this opportunity to thank the cast and crew
of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change for their
generosity in immediately agreeing to this idea. So
don’t miss out a second time—book your tickets now
and know that your money is going to help our
fellow Australians.
BEAUMARIS THEATRE IS EMBARKING ON AN EXCITING PROJECT, WITH THE COMFORT OF OUR
PATRONS THE PRIORITY. JENNI OSBURN EXPLAINS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO.
After several requests from our guest directors
and set designers, the committee decided to
hire raked seating for our 2010 productions to
gauge audience and members’ opinions.
The outcome of our trial has been very positive in
regards to the viewing experience, but the actual
seats themselves were hard and uncomfortable.
Unfortunately the next level of seating which is
padded was just too expensive for a trial run.
It has been decided that we would like to buy our
own raked retractable seating. The model we
have chosen has padded seats and when not in
use will be stored against the back wall under the
bio box window, keeping the auditorium space a
multi purpose one.
That’s the good news…now to pay for it ….are you
sitting down….. (pun intended)….. our house in
Chelsea in the late seventies was less that this….
I feel I have prepared you enough.. The quote is
$52,000.00. Scary isn’t it, but don’t lose heart
just yet! We intend to source quite a lot of the
funds through grants but we have to come up
with a sizeable contribution ourselves in partnership
with other bodies such as The Department
of Community Development who have suggested
we would qualify for them to grant $1 for every
$3 we raise from elsewhere, so effectively we are
a quarter of the way there already.
We would like to offer to our patrons the unique
opportunity to sponsor a seat. Your family
name or business name will be engraved on a
metal plague and attached to the back of a seat
permanently. Yes, you can nominate your seat
number and if you are the first it will be yours.
There will be sixty nine seats available for
sponsorship and the cost is a one off donation of
$100.00 (with the exception of F12 where we
expect a bidding war!).
If you could please fill in the pledge form below
and return it via post or email to the theatre as
soon as possible it would be most appreciated.
To secure funds/grants from other sources we
need to have our figures to present to them. If
SOME PEOPLE HAVE THE HAPPY KNACK OF BEING IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME. ONE
OF OUR THEATRE STALWARTS SEEMS TO BE JUST SUCH A PERSON. VINCE VAUGHAN IS WELL-KNOWN
TO AND LIKED BY MANY HERE AT BEAUMARIS THEATRE, BUT AFTER READING HIS EXPERIENCES OVER
THE YEARS PERHAPS ONE SHOULD NOT STAY TOO CLOSE TO HIM FOR TOO LONG….???
Shaken, not Stirred…..
I always wondered why James Bond 007 requested
his martinis this way.
I have only just started drinking martinis as I
have never liked Gin, but a friend I play tennis
with put me onto Tanqueray Gin and I really liked
it. Add a few olives (I only just started liking olives)
and as long as the Dry Cinzano is in the
same room, the Martini (dirty martini) will be just
fine.
But why shaken and not stirred? It is only now
that I can totally disagree with James.
From now on I will always have my martini
stirred not shaken. You see, I am a very good
sleeper. If I feel tired whilst I am driving, I pull
over and have a power nap. I will be asleep in
under five minutes and can sleep for anything
from five minutes to 4 hours - all in the comfort
of the car seat.
I did sleep through most of Darwin Cyclone in
1974. I was up there to see my sister, arrived the
day before the cyclone and was shipped out 5
days later. I woke up to find her putting a sheet
on me "in case I got cold". In Darwin(?), you
have to be kidding! But when she informed me
that a tree had fallen on the house I was well
awake. The roof was blown off the house so we
changed houses (and went over to the Vincents'
house). Whilst leaning up against a cupboard, I
found that I was sitting next to a woman in her
seventies and was amazed to find that she was
crying. Here I was, just 18, surely I had more to
cry about? So what do you do for 4-5 hours
while waiting for the winds to ease - sleep of
course! - standing up as all of the surfaces were
wet.
Now getting back to the shaking. Recently, I
was awoken suddenly and found myself standing
next to my bed, puzzled, until I could see the
column in my room moving about 2' (600mm)
from side to side. I never manage to get a
booking on the top floor of a hotel, but on this
occasion I did. I was on the sixth floor of a hotel
on Cathedral Square in the centre of Christchurch.
We’d just had a magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
That’s about 10,000 times stronger than
a 3.1 magnitude earthquake that we get sometimes
in Melbourne. I had been thrown out of
bed and bounced off the walls on my way to the
door. As I was about to leave, I realised I was
in my undies (please do not imagine that). I
went back in and grabbed a pillow to stop my
door from closing as my key and phone were
near the window, and I wasn't going anywhere
near there. The shaking stopped, so I went
back to the room and put on some pants and a
jacket and grabbed the keys. At the staircase
there were two New Zealanders arguing about
whether to go up or down. You have to be kidding.
UP!!! I explained in very subtle terms
(those who know me understand I am not subtle)
that he should get out of my way as I was
going down! The next four hours I was outside
contemplating why I hadn’t put shoes on and
grabbed my mobile phone. Luckily it was a nice
day in Christchurch (about 2 degrees).
Later on I sent an SMS to my sister explaining
where I was and that I was ok. What did she reply
- DO THEY REALISE YOU’RE THERE YET? Apparently
she thinks natural disasters follow me.
Lightning once struck a plane I was in. A tornado
broke a few trees (about 2' thick) on Fraser Island
whilst I was there. I was in floods in Southern
Queensland several years ago, but fortunately
not this summer. The volcano in Taupo New Zealand
erupted while I was there. But surely I
wasn't close enough to the Bush Fires north of
Melbourne last year to be held responsible for
that? And I don't think I’ve been near a Tsunami.......yet.
So please! Stir my Martini - I am (still) shaken
enough!
FIRST AID
We are contemplating running Level 1 or Level 2 First Aid Courses for interested members
by a professional First Aid Trainer. A Level 1 Course will cost approximately $75 for one
day or two evenings and a Level 2 Course would cost approximately $150 for 2 days or 4
evenings. We need a minimum of six participants to go ahead. If you are interested in
participating, please call Debbie Keyt on 0401 450979 to express interest.

THE TALBOT AWARDS HAVE BECOME AN INTEGRAL AND MUCH ANTICIPATED EVENT IN THE
BEAUMARIS THEATRE CALENDAR EACH YEAR. DEBBIE KEYT TAKES THE LEADING ROLE IN
ORGANISING THEM, ENSURING THEY RUN SMOOTHLY AND ARE ALSO A GREAT DEAL OF FUN.
HERE SHE DESCRIBES THE PLANNING THAT WENT INTO THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL
2010 TALBOTS.
Back on Sunday 8 th of August, The Talbot Sub Committee
all met for brunch at Malt in Beaumaris and it was
an exciting sign of good things to come. We had a lovely
banquet and the planning was stimulating. It was
decided, as this year we were staging two musicals and
two other past Broadway plays, our theme for 2010
should be Beaumaris Goes Broadway. The preparations
began in earnest.
After that initial get-together, there was a lot to organise
- our MC, invitations, caterers, venue, helpers, format,
music, slide shows, presenters, lighting, sound,
entertainment, decorations, tickets, photography, adjudicators,
trophies and the like. The invitations were
sent two months prior and as the RSVP date approached
the expectation grew. Of course there was
the obligatory chasing up of late replies, however that
all adds to the pleasant pandemonium.
The week prior to the event is a flurry of
last minute arrangements. We hit the
eve of Talbot Eve and had an opening
number rehearsal with four leading ladies
and our MC Michael Young. Danny chose
Sondheim’s “Broadway Baby” which was
a very apt choice for the evening.
Danny, Michael, Leah Osburn, Bek Chapman,
Stacie Mason and Courtney Smyth
went through their paces and as they felt
more confident it was very evident to
Janine and me (who were privileged to
be at the rehearsal) that it was going to
start the night off with finesse and style.
The big day finally came and we all met
at the Black Rock Bowling and Tennis
Club to set up. There is always such a
buzz surrounding the event and we were all very wound
up and eager as we put everything into place. Then it
was back home again to put the finishing touches together
and glam up and return to await the arrival of
our “stars”. The moment our guests make that walk
from the car park to the venue along the red carpet to
be photographed is an exhilarating point in time. The
ladies always look breathtakingly beautiful and the gentlemen
classy and handsome. Then everyone mingles
awaiting the formalities to begin and the euphoria of
catching up with old and new friends hits fever pitch!
The VIP guests take their seats and the Talbots officially
commence. Our opening number this year as expected
was a highlight and Danny, Michael and the girls
did us proud – it was dazzling. The Award presentations
then began. We took breaks for our delicious dinner
and desert and to replenish drinks and natter some
more. Each show for the year presented a musical
item, and as always there were a few entertainment
surprises along the way. The night concluded with the
announcement of the Most Outstanding Director(s) and
Most Outstanding Production for the Year, and then we
all conversed some more, cleaned and tidied and bid
each other “Adieu, until we meet again”.
Our 7 th Annual Talbots would not have been possible if
not for the willing and spirited enthusiasm of many.
We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the
following: Rosey Cooke and Louise Nottage, and their
helper Josie for our scrumptious smorgasbord; Danny
Forward our magnificent musical maestro for his brilliant
arrangements; Michael Young, our mirthful and
professional Master of Ceremonies; Vince Vaughan who
arranged the venue, the red carpet, slide show and skilfully
manned the bar all evening; Stacey Stewart, Judy
Coultas and Colin Prossor our loyal 2010 adjudicators,
and Robyn Morris for overseeing the process; special
thanks to Stacey Stewart for all the extra work she always
carries out to make our awards ceremony a success;
Austin and Mimi Giordano and Lucy Bashfield, our
eager and friendly hospitality staff for
the night; Alan Crispin and Brian Uniacke
for once again creating our warm
ambience and mood; Leah, Bek, Stacie,
Courtney, Michael and Danny for the
spectacular opening; Emma Harris,
Alan Crispin, Andrea Bashfield, Chris
Churchward, Kristina Doucouliagos,
Vince Vaughan and Brian Uniacke for
being tremendous presenters of the
auspicious awards; Pietro Giordano, our
photographer to the celebrities; Malcolm
Flitman for ticket production;
Kristina Doucouliagos for the striking
invitations and our background music;
all performers from our productions for
entertainment items; our sub committee
of Janine, Danny, Kristina, Jenni
and Trevor for all their fabulous ideas
and support; Janine, Robyn, Danny, Vince, Alan, Rita
and Brian for helping to set up and pack up and all the
additional helpers who stayed back to return everything
to the way it was.
Congratulations again to all our nominees and award
winners for 2010 (a complete list of these appears elsewhere
in the Talbot Tattler, along with photographs).
Most importantly, the Talbots is a celebration of our
Theatre. We would like to recognise everyone who
makes up our Beaumaris Theatre family. Every member
of every creative team, crews, casts, tech teams,
builders, committee, front of house staff and ticket secretaries
who embrace our productions and the process
that goes into putting on a ‘show’, unconditionally with
fervour and passion. We thank you all for your commitment
and devotion. Our four productions for 2010 were
all triumphant and our audiences left feeling joy, their
spirits were lifted, their hearts were fulfilled and messages
to make them ‘think’ were delivered. We are extremely
proud of all we do and we could not be more
proud of our theatrical family. We look forward to 2011
with glorious expectation and our Talbot’s next year will
be the social highlight of our year once more…

THE WEEKEND OF THE 4 TH AND 5 TH OF DECEMBER 2010 WAS A VERY BUSY TIME FOR US AS
WE ATTENDED BOTH THE MUSIC THEATRE GUILD OF VICTORIA AWARDS AND THE VICTORIAN
DRAMA LEAGUE AWARDS. DEBBIE KEYT DESCRIBES OUR EXCITEMENT AS WE LEARNED
HOW WELL WE HAD DONE AT BOTH THESE EVENTS.
The Music Theatre Guild of Victoria Awards
2010 was the first me Beaumaris Theatre Inc had entered any producons for adjudicaon at the Music Theatre Guild Awards.
There are over 90 musical producons judged by the Guild. Nominaons are announced prior to the awards evening. We were
thrilled when we learned we had received two nominaons, one for Bek Chapman – Lead Actress for her role as ‘Maria’ in The
Sound of Music, and the other for Ljerka Kelly, nominaon for Design for the von Trapp Villa in The Sound of Music.
We arrived (a lile late - it was a funny sight to see five of us running from our car up the hill to the performing arts auditorium
in high heels - but that’s another story…) and finally took our seats as the Excellence Awards were announced. The presenter
started to read the credenals of the first recipient, which was the Musicians Award for Excellence. Born in Brisbane, lived in
London for several years… Could it be??? Made his theatrical come back at Beaumaris Theatre…who else could it be???!!!
IN A TANTALIZING LOOK AHEAD TO OUR FAMILY SHOW FOR 2011, DIRECTOR DEBBIE KEYT TALKS
ABOUT WHERE THIS PRODUCTION FITS IN THE LONG LINE OF MAGICAL PLACES THAT HAVE BEEN
CREATED AT BEAUMARIS THEATRE, AND THE WONDERFUL CAST AND CREW THAT HAVE BEEN AS-
SEMBLED.
”Once upon a time in a land
far, far away lived a beautiful
young girl named Cinderella…”
We all know the delightful
Fairy Tale and the happy
ending of the most famous story
of them all. Story telling is
our greatest commodity: –
children crave it at bedtime,
and we continue to desire it
all the days of our lives. Theatre
is unique in its ability to
transform and transport.
Over the past ten years our
family shows have taken us to
Merry Old England; Oz and
the Emerald City; New York
City; Murrumbilla; Narnia,
Wonderland; Maine; Prince
Edward Island; Never Land
and Salzburg. Looking back
gives us great joy to move forward.
For our 2011 family
show we have chosen Rodgers
and Hammerstein’s Cinderella-
the timeless enchantment
of a magical fairy tale is reborn
with the Rodgers and
Hammerstein hallmarks of
originality, charm and elegance.
Originally presented
on television in 1957 starring
Julie Andrews, it was the
most widely viewed program
in the history of the medium.
Its recreation in 1965 starring
Lesley Ann Warren was no
less successful in transporting
a new generation to the miraculous
kingdom of dreamscome-true,
and so was the second
remake in 1997, which
starred Brandy as Cinderella
and Whitney Houston as her
Fairy Godmother. It has been
adapted for the stage with
great warmth and more than
a touch of hilarity. The hearts
of children and adults alike
still soar when the slipper fits.
We are thrilled with our talented
cast and at the time of
writing, we cannot wait to
begin our journey and rehearsal
period. To whet your
appetites, our cast list is below.
PUZZLE PAGE
Our forthcoming production, An Evening at Beaumaris Theatre, is
a sophisticated Cabaret. All the words in this puzzle are related to
Cabaret. Can you complete it?
** Answers will be found on
our website.
Did You Know…
Taler Tale
…that Rowan Francis, who has performed many memorable roles
on our stage, including ‘Ronald Ryan’ in Remember Ronald Ryan,
was recently spotted as a mentally challenged patient in Channel
10’s series Offspring?
...that Peter Kostopoulos, who was last seen on stage at Beaumaris
in his Talbot Award winning role of ‘Manuel’ in Fawlty Towers,
played a chicken in the pantomime Humpty with another theatre
company recently? Co-incidentally another of our theatre family,
Alistaire Bowler, has also played ‘Humpty Dumpty’ in the past.
This is obviously a part that leads to big breaks!
Did You Know…
Taler Tale
…that Stacey Stewart, who has graced our stage several
times but most recently has been concentrating on her role
as a Talbot Adjudicator, has been accepted into a Nursing/
Midwifery Degree Course and she will commence her studies
in 2012?
…that several of our junior performers from previous family
shows successfully completed their VCE at the end of 2010
- Daisy Lewis-Toakley, Austin Giordano, Dan Vaughan and
Adrian Bowler? As they all enter the next exciting phase of
their lives we wish them every success!!!

As It Happened
This year, by popular demand we are staging three more
episodes of arguably one of the greatest Brish comedies,
Fawlty Towers. Its magic formula is a winning combinaon
of fantasc wring, comic ming and flamboyant characterizaon.
During the 70’s 80’s and 90’s Beaumaris Theatre
was renowned for staging hilarious Brish comedies and
slapsck farces and our audiences, made up largely of local
English ex-pats, adored them. Comedy is defined as ‘real
people in unreal situaons’ and the definion of farce is
‘unreal people, in unreal situaons’. Over the years many
hilarious plays were produced. Once such play was in July
1997, when Beaumaris Theatre Incorporated presented the
riotous, farcical comedy, by Ray Cooney, Run For Your
Wife.
Ray Ainsworth directed the producon and it starred stalwart
of the me, Graham Eddie in the lead role of John
Smith. The synopsis is:
John Smith is your ordinary London cab driver. He owns his
own car, sets his own hours, is hard working, punctual and
lives a very ordinary life...with the excepon of his two
wives, Mary and Barbara. One night John stops an old
woman from geng mugged and gets knocked unconscious.
Aer being checked over at the hospital, he is taken
to his home with Mary by a local police officer, Detecve
Troughton. However, that morning, he supposed to be with
at his home with Barbara. Aer realizing his predicament,
John tries to get home to Barbara while keeping both his
first wife Mary and Detecve Troughton from finding out
about his second wife. Enlisng the help of his upstairs
slacker neighbor, Stanley Gardener, John heaps one lie upon
another to get back to Barbara and back on his very precise
schedule. All appears to be well unl another police
officer, Detecve Porterhouse, arrives from a neighboring
district invesgang the case of two cab drivers named
John Smith, both mugged on the same night but having
different addresses. Quick thinking Stanley exaggerates
several more lies to create a new John Smith for Detecve
Porterhouse, while keeping the truth from Mary. As the lies
pile up and craziness ensues, Stanley and John try valiantly
to keep the nosy detecves busy, John's suspicious wives
from running into each other, their sex lives straight and all
of their stories together. Throw into the mix the effeminate
neighbour Bobby, and chaos reigns.
In the grand tradion of the aforemenoned Fawlty Towers,
Mr. Bean and The Benny Hill Show, Run for Your Wife
was a fast paced, slapsck, laugh a minute romp that le
the audience in stches and begging for more.
It also featured Jo Okulski, Stephen Mulholland, John Hu,
Alistair Mulholland, John Avery, Marn Gibbs and Debbie
Keyt.
Dear Dr Shakespeare,
As costume person for our local theatre company, I think I do my
bit - well, many mes more than my bit! But one thing that can
never be said about me is that I complain. I may somemes throw
scissors in the general direcon of the leading actress. I may have
once or twice have accidentally-on-purpose put a broken zip into
the fly of the leading man's costume so that it came open on
stage. I may have stched the hem of a pecoat so that it hung
down below the skirt of a ball gown on one occasion. However I
have never been heard to complain. I consider myself to be a very
paent obliging person. Unl now. Recently we staged a show
where an actress had to wear a bridal gown. As she was on, shall
we tacully say, the anorexic side, I had to spend hours taking in
the dress for her. It did look lovely too (although her neck was a
lile scrawny). When the show was finished I dufully unpicked
all the seams I had so lovingly stched up, had the dress cleaned,
and put it away in wardrobe, as is my usual procedure. Now, 2
months on, I find we are doing two more nights of the same show
to raise money for a disaster of some sort! And dear Doctor, you
know what this means - I have to spend MORE me stching the
dress up again! Really! Do they think I have nothing beer to do?
Can't they make up their minds what they want? I am interested
in your opinion here Doctor, as I feel I should really complain
about this!
Yours,
Thimbellina.
Dear Thimbellina,
I was reduced to tears on reading your leer! What a way to treat
a Wardrobe Mistress! And such an obliging gentle spirited soul
you appear to be! I really do think the me might have come for
you to complain, my sweatpea! Surely you have suffered
enough?! Surely you have turned the other cheek unl all four of
the delighul peach fuzz covered prees are glowing pink and
throbbing in fury!? Is it not enough that these beasts demand to
clothe their nasty nasty sweaty bodies in your beauful silky shiny
things? (All clean and fresh and wrapped in cellophane and put
away in their places and their whereabouts documented on your
set of index cards that you keep in your special secret
place)........That they add further insult by casng hideously misshapen
"actors" who are totally the wrong size and shape for the
brilliant garments that you have prepared (that quite frankly make
the show)? Now they would wish to have you sewing and picking
and resewing as if you were...well...as if you were....a Wardrobe
Mistress? Oh…. See I think this might be a problem.
Well, perhaps complaining might be a bit difficult. Perhaps it
might be more sasfying to take the frock in a few EXTRA inches....and
ever so gently express surprise at how much weight your
scrawny bride has piled on? Just don't tell anyone you got this
from me.
Yours without ever a word of complaint
Dr Shakespeare
