Two thousand one will live in
our collective memory as a year
of change and challenge in our
industry, our economy and our
country as a whole. However, it is
often at times of our greatest challenge
that we also find a renewed sense of
optimism.
Anyone involved in this
industry knows the business
runs in cycles. We all
know intuitively that the
escalation of many businesses
during the past few
years was not sustainable
over the long term. The
heady days of ever increasing
profit margins, an endless
supply of new demand,
and the continuing infusion
of capital, are wonderful.
But what goes up will eventually come
down, and the rapidity of the decline
has surprised us all. Yet looking forward,
I am encouraged.
The opportunity that arises during a
down turn in the market is the ability
to prove your worth as a professional.
The distinction between average performance
and great performance
becomes much more clear in stable or
declining conditions. Challenging
times force us to fully utilize the skill
sets we have developed over the years.
Associations also prove their worth
during challenging times, as a source of
information, education, and networking
opportunities. BOMA's mission to
advance the commercial real estate
industry through advocacy, professional
development and the exchange of
information, is a constant during both
prosperous and challenging times.
BOMA is committed to providing the
services and tools necessary
to help our members succeed.
Utilizing the tools available
to you through your BOMA
membership, I encourage
you to evaluate the current
level of your professional
training and augment those
areas that need fine-tuning.
The educational programs
offered by BOMI are a rich
source of state of the industry
education, and a fast track for
greater professionalism in commercial
real estate. Get involved in one of the
many volunteer committees or task
forces. In addition to extending your
knowledge in a particular subject area,
you will get to know other like-minded
professionals. Enjoy the social functions
the organization provides.
Networking in a casual surrounding is
fun and productive.
Most of all, remember to seek out the
positives ahead, and find your own
sense of optimism

Holiday Cheer Abounds
at BOMA’s Annual Holiday Party
By Fred West, Marble West
Over 400 BOMA members kicked off the
Holiday Season at The City Club on December
5th. Given the fact that the original venue
advised us in October that they were no longer
in business, a big round of
applause should be directed to
the Associates Committee for
securing such a lovely location
on such short notice. The convenient
location, fabulous
ambience and delicious food
and drink provided ample
merriment for the BOMA
crowd. We even showed some
BOMA Los Angeles members how well we party
here in Northern California. Glen Gilmore
(Sentinel Guard Systems) flew some of his people
up for the party and they were suitably
impressed.
Back by popular demand, Bruce Schilling’s
music teacher and his trio provided lovely tunes
and Eddie the Magician amazed the crowd with
his bag of tricks. Our members generosity was
evident by the mounds of toys
donated to BOMA's annual toy
drive. The San Francisco
Firefighters joyfully took loads
of toys down to their fire
trucks parked outside.
Thanks to all who attended,
and thanks to the Associates
Committee for their hard work
and dedication in producing a wonderful event.
Mark your calendars for the Spring Golf
Tournament at Silverado Country Club on May
Many of you know Tim Danz, the chief engineer at
350-400 California Street and long-time Cushman &
Wakefield employee. Tragically, Tim lost his brother
Vincent, a member of the NYPD Emergency Service
Unit in the World Trade Center disaster. Vincent left
behind a wife and three children. The accumulation
of benefits from various charities will sufficiently
care for his family. However Vincent was the primary
caregiver for his elderly mother, Ellen Danz.
A family fund has been established to serve as supplemental
financial assistance for Ellen Danz.
Supporting our friend and colleague Tim Danz and
his family in their time of need presents an opportunity
to show our colors as a caring combined community
of professionals. If you wish to lend support,
please send your contribution to:
RECYCLING UPDATE
COMMERCIAL RECYCLING IS IN THE DUMPSTER
Congratulations to the Winners of the 2001
Commercial Recycler of the Year Awards.
On November 29, 2001 twenty six San Francisco
hotels, restaurants, and office buildings were rewarded
for picking through their trash. The winners of
the 2001 Commercial Recycler of the Year (CORY)
Awards received the coveted “golden dumpster”
awards.
Sponsored by the San Francisco Department of the
Environment and BOMA San Francisco, together
with Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling Company,
Golden Gate Restaurant
Association, and the Hotel
Council of San Francisco, the
awards honor those businesses
that do an excellent job of
putting ‘reduce, reuse, and
recycle’ into practice. A total of
42 San Francisco hotels, restaurants,
and office buildings
applied this year.
"Each year San Francisco's commercial
sector puts nearly one
million tons of material into the waste stream, an
amount greater than the weight of the Golden Gate
Bridge," said SF Environment Director Jared
Blumenfeld. "We need to make sure that as much of
that material as possible gets recycled, and the CORY
awards provide a wonderful incentive for businesses
to do their part."
Commercial Recycler of the Year Award winners
have adopted various techniques to keep their waste
down, ranging from the drastic to the downright
clever. 100 Pine Street removed the liners from the
desk side garbage cans to discourage tenants from
putting anything but recyclables in there. The staff at
the Hilton Hotel have been known to go into dumpsters
after items that were reusable or recyclable. The
SF Department of the Environment Director, Jared
Blumenfeld, CORY Chair Mark Rumpler and ABC 7
News Meteorologist Joel Bartlett.
janitors at 1275 Market maintain a shrine to recycling
to keep them motivated. Jardinière Restaurant uses
menus made from recycled money, Sparky’s Diner
uses items in bulk to reduce packaging, and the staff
at Scoma’s Restaurant even compost fish heads.
"We were impressed by the variety and ingenuity of
the recycling programs of the CORY winners," Mark
Rumpler, Chairman of the BOMA Recycling Task
Force remarked. "It’s clear that they put a tremendous
amount of energy and thought into creating
and maintaining their programs to reduce waste."
At the current rate of waste production the City of
San Francisco could run out of
landfill space in as little as 11
years. The state of California
mandated that cities and counties
reduce their waste by 50 percent
or possibly face huge fines.
Last year San Francisco recycled
43 percent of its waste. Since
businesses produce nearly twothirds
of the garbage in San
Francisco, they are the key to
reaching the City’s recycling
goals.
San Francisco businesses are not mandated to recycle.
The Commercial Recycler of the Year Awards was
created by the BOMA Recycling Task Force to publicly
honor good commercial recyclers and encourage
other businesses to start programs. This is the
second year of the Commercial Recycler of the Year
Awards and the first year that hotels and restaurants,
as well as office buildings, were eligible to apply.
In addition to the coveted golden dumpster for the
first-place winners, runner-ups received artwork
made out of recycled glass, while recipients of honorable
mention were given award certificates. All of
the winners also received grant awards to enhance
their recycling programs or reward the staff members
who actually do the recycling. Winners were chosen
by industry panelists who scored all applications on
a point scale and visited the sites
to personally review the programs
of the finalists.
"The best ambassadors for commercial
recycling are the businesses
themselves," Blumenfeld
said. "A good commercial recycling
program saves money on
garbage costs, boosts employee
morale, and helps the environment
at the same time."
The Queen of Recycling, Margot Crosman, Unico
Properties, recieves her 1st place award in the Large
Office Building category from Joel Bartlett, Jared
Blumenfeld and Lolita Sweet.
Special thanks to Metro Maintenance for their sponsorship
which helped underwrite the luncheon, and
to Chris Levaggi of Golden Gate
Disposal & Recycling for creating
the recycled glass awards
and providing the Golden
Dumpsters.
Tricia Collins, Pacific Eagle Holdings Corp., receives
her Runner Up award in the Medium Office category.
