Scripture Reflections for the
BAPTISM OF
THE LORD
LIVING
the
WORD
Sunday,
January 13, 2013
TODAY'S FOCUS:
BAPTIZED FOR MISSION
We end this Christmas season, appropriately with
a song. It is a song attributed to an anonymous figure
called the Servant from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
In the first reading, and alluded to in the Gospel, this
song speaks of Jesus’ special mission: pleasing the
Father and establishing justice on the earth.
• FIRST READING
Behold my servant with whom I am well pleased
(Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11).
The people had suffered terribly during the war that led
to the fail of Jerusalem and during their exile from their
homeland. They wondered whether God would be angry
at them forever. Second Isaiah (an anonymous prophet
whose writings were attached to those of the Prophet
Isaiah) spoke of the consolation that the LORD was about
to offer. God would restore the good fortune of the
people. God would bring the people of Israel back to their
homeland. There would be no barrier that would prevent
the people from going home. This good news was to be
proclaimed on the mountaintops.
• SECOND READING
Jesus Christ saved us through the bath of rebirth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit (Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7).
The “bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” that
we have received was not due to anything that we had
done to deserve it. It was the gift of a merciful and
gracious God. Baptism is an expression of our faith. Faith
is a gift from God. We cannot do anything to earn that gift.
Yet, once we have received that gift from God, we must
respond to it by being baptized and living as children of
God. This reading reminds us that receiving the
Sacrament of Baptism is not enough. It is not a magical
act that fulfills our responsibility to live as God’s children.
We must also live what Baptism signifies. We must reject
those things which are opposed to the truth (“our godless
ways”) and live lives filled with virtue.
• GOSPEL
When Jesus had been baptized and was praying, heaven
was opened (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22).
When John the Baptist began His ministry of preaching
conversion, many wondered whether he might be the
Messiah of God. John himself gave witness that he was
not the Messiah, that another would come along who
was much greater than he. He only baptized with water,
but the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and
fire. (The role of the Holy Spirit is central in the writings
of Luke.) While John’s Baptism only gave us the
possibility of turning from our sins, Jesus’ Baptism made
us into children of God. It invites us into the life of the
Trinity (which is why we hear the voice of the Father
and see the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove).
• REFLECTION
For many people, the end of the Christmas season carries
a touch of sadness. Joy gives way to January. The liturgy,
however, turns our attention to the work that lies at the
heart of the mystery of the Incarnation. This feast of the
Lord’s baptism is the final feast of the Christmas season,
serving as a bridge from Christmastime to Ordinary Time.
It presents Jesus as God’s “beloved Son.” His baptism
placed Jesus on the road of His mission: to reveal the
Father and to begin to bring about the kingdom of God in
the world. The First Reading helps us understand Jesus’
mission in light of an unknown Old Testament figure
called the Servant. The book of the prophet Isaiah
contains four poems called the Servant Songs: 42:1-7;
49:1-7; 50:4-11; 52:13—53:12. These songs speak of a
servant on whom God has poured God’s spirit to be God’s
agent in the world and bring justice to the nations. The
Christian community hears these songs in light of Jesus.
St. Paul likewise quoted an early hymn (Philippians 2:5-
11), singing of Jesus as one who emptied Himself, taking
the form of a slave, becoming obedient even unto death
on a cross. Our baptism brought us into the Body of
Christ, setting us on the path of continuing Jesus’ mission.
When the Holy Spirit came upon us, we became God’s
beloved children in Christ and the mission of Christ,
which is the mission of the Church, became our mission.
YEAR OF FAITH
DIOCESE OF JOLIET
CATECHISM CORNER
As the Magi offered gifts to the Christ Child at
Epiphany, we take this month of new possibilities to
celebrate the Holy Spirit, the giver of life to the world
and our Advocate who guides us in truth (Jn 16:1-
33). We celebrate the life of all God’s people, from
conception to natural death, and all the time in
between where the Spirit infuses us with strong
faith, good works, and courage to proclaim the
Good News (just as the Spirit did in Acts 2:1-47).
We celebrate the gift of God’s Word, recorded in the
Holy Scripture, which guides our lives and gives us
the opportunity to hear the voice of the Lord — and
in “Dei Verbum” (Second Vatican Council), that
encourages all people of faith to keep close to their
hearts and minds every day of their lives.
January 13:
“Only when the hour has arrived for His glorification
does Jesus promise the coming of the Holy Spirit, since
His Death and Resurrection will fulfill the promise made
to the fathers. The Spirit of Truth, the other Paraclete,
will be given by the Father in answer to Jesus’ prayer; He
will be sent by the Father in Jesus’ name; and Jesus will
send Him from the Father’s side, since He comes from
the Father. The Holy Spirit will come and we shall know
Him; He will be with us for ever; he will remain with us.
The Spirit will teach us everything, remind us of all that
Christ said to us and bear witness to him. The Holy Spirit
will lead us into all truth and will glorify Christ. He will
prove the world wrong about sin, righteousness and
judgment." CCC, n. 729
JANUARY PRAYER INTENTION
For a greater respect for human life.

SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY
JANUARY 20, 2013
40 years ago our country made abortions legal,
yet our work is never ending...
For those in the difficult position of facing an unplanned
pregnancy, the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains the only true
hope in the midst of seemingly hopeless circumstances. The
Body of Christ, His Church, must stand in the gap on behalf
of our land, and renew our commitment to care for those
less fortunate, not out of misguided pity or self-righteous
judgment, but out of a God-given compassion for all people
– for we each are shaped in the very image of God Himself.
It is time to restore the family unit. One thing we do know
is for every woman who seeks our services, there is a
young man and they are in some kind of relationship.
The staff and volunteers of PASS Pregnancy Care
Centers have faithfully served the South Suburbs for 29
years. Through the support of churches, businesses, and
families PASS has always offered its services free of charge.
Women, men, and children are being set free from the
bondage of sin through the life-changing power of Jesus
Christ. In addition to sharing the Gospel with our clients,
PASS Pregnancy Care Centers ministers in a number of
different ways, including:
Pregnancy Services. Free and confidential services
including pregnancy tests, limited OB ultrasound, options
counseling, material resources including: maternity and baby
clothing, diapers, formula, car seats and furnishings.
IMPACT! Abstinence Education. Teaches young people
the benefits of abstinence, and enables healthy choices.
PASS takes the vital abstinence ‘til marriage message to
schools, churches and youth organizations.
Hope and Healing. Restores the lives of women and men
struggling with issues related to past hurts, abortion, abuse.
It is our hope that by serving the women and men in
our community by meeting their physical, emotional and
material needs, they will see the love of Jesus Christ and
will cling to the hope offered only in Him. Our goal is to
share God’s love with expectant mothers and fathers, so
they will open their hearts to Jesus and they will choose life.
He is the reason for the existence of this ministry, and He is
the reason that over 750 women chose life for their unborn
children last year alone. Now with the acceptance of
chemical abortions (Abortifacients) the devil is at work
desensitizing our youth to yet another level of secrecy.
PASS is working for eyes to be opened to the long term
effects of abortion, which affects us all.
PRO LIFE REFLECTION
When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled,
the lame, and the blind. Then indeed will you be blessed
because they have no way to repay you. —LK 14:13-14
Jesus calls us to the purest form of love, that is, love of those
who cannot repay us. The unborn children, whose lives we
seek to protect, cannot repay us and do not even know we
are fighting for them. Pro-life work is motivated by pure love.
Lord, increase my love for children in the womb who cannot
acknowledge or repay me. May You be my only reward.
ADORATION CHAPEL OF MERCY
As we have entered into a new year on both the liturgical
and civil calendars and made our New Years resolutions, I
hope one of those resolutions was to grow in your faith
and to know our Lord more intimately. To help you grow
in your relationship with our Lord, please consider spending
an hour with Him in Eucharistic Adoration. You are
welcome to spend time with Him in the Chapel of Mercy,
but are especially invited to commit to a regular hour each
week. The following hours need regular adorers. Please fill
out an Invitation to Adore and drop it at the church
office or in the offering, or Email Valpo77@aol.com, or call
We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially
inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of
time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
