Page Four — December 4, 2011Saint Anthony Catholic ChurchScripture Reflections for theSecond Sunday of AdventLIVINGtheWORDSunday,December 4, 2011TODAY'S FOCUS:ROADWORK IN PROGRESSPreparing for Christmas is one way we remindourselves that we are always in a state of preparingto celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ. Opening upa roadway for the Lord to come into our lives is anever-ending process. The heart can be resistant toexpansion.• FIRST READINGPrepare the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11).Jerusalem had been destroyed and the elite of Israel hadbeen carried off into exile. They began to wonderwhether God was less powerful than the gods of Babylon. They even wondered whether God was so angry at themthat He would never forgive them. The first words of thisprophecy respond to these questions. Israel would beconsoled and comforted. God only wanted to heal her andrestore her to the promised land.• SECOND READINGWe await new heavens and a new earth (2 Peter 3:8-14).In the early Church, Christians believed that Jesus wouldreturn in glory within a very short time. But time wentby, and still Jesus did not arrive. Some Christians beganto ask whether Jesus ever would return. Was somethingwrong? In this letter we hear that the Lord will returnat the end of time, and that His delay is not due to Hisforgetting His promises. Rather, God is giving us extratime for conversion. Jesus wants to give us all theopportunity to turn our lives around and dedicateourselves to the ways of the Lord. He wants our salvationand not our destruction. We should use that timecarefully in order to be ready when the end (whetherour end or the end of the world) does come.• GOSPELMake straight the paths of the Lord (Mark 1:1-8).John is called the new Elijah who would prepare the waysof the Lord and make straight the paths before Him. Hewould preach conversion to the people of Israel so thatthey would be able to open their hearts to Jesus whenHe arrived. John practiced a baptism of conversion thatcleansed the people of their sins. This might have been apractice that John learned from Qumran, a community ofcelibate monks near the Dead Sea that was awaiting theDay of the Lord. They practiced ceremonial ablutions topurify themselves from their sins. Yet, while Johnpracticed this type of baptism, he also pointed to anothertype of Baptism — not only washed free of our sins butalso gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spiritthat makes us children of God, heirs to the Kingdom ofGod, and brothers and sisters of Jesus.• REFLECTIONThere was a little boy coming home from church andbeing asked what the preacher had spoken about. Thechurch used the King James Version of the scriptures andthe preacher had spent some time on the reading fromIsaiah. But that translation began: “Comfort ye, comfortye, my people, Saith your God.” In response to hisparents’ inquiry, the child said, “It was just lovely. Thepriest told us how God is saying, ‘Come to tea, come totea, my people.’”While Isaiah’s message is certainly comforting, withGod telling the prophet to speak tenderly and tell an exilepeople that all is forgiven, that the punishment for sin hasrun its course, these words are not the equivalent of aninvitation to a relaxing cup of tea. Now as then, they serveas an invitation to get to work, to remove any obstaclethat prevents God from coming into our hearts. Thismeans that we have to get our hearts into shape, and ourvoices have to become willing to announce that God livesand comes with power to save.John the Baptist remains a model for us today. Hespoke out boldly, calling people to prepare a way forthe Lord, which was a call to conversion and innertransformation. We are to take in this same message, first as listeners, then as heralds ourselves, witnessingto family, friends, and any who will listen that Jesusdesires to come more fully in our lives.Mon., Dec. 5thIs 35:1-10Lk 5:17-26Tues., Dec. 6thIs 40:1-11Mt 18:12-14READINGS FOR THE WEEKWed., Dec. 7thIs 40:25-31Mt 11:28-30Thurs., Dec. 8thGn 3:9-15, 20 Eph 1:3-6,11-12; Lk 1:26-38Fri., Dec. 9thIs 48:17-19Mt 11:16-19Monday:

Through hard work, prayer, and sacrifice, they built Catholic schools and hospitals, initiated programs to promote socialjustice, and ministered to the neediest among us. As I reflect on the dedication of elder religious,I remain grateful for the ways that they have shaped my own faith and for the tremendousservice that they have offered our diocese. I hope that you, too, can recall a sister or brotherwho made a positive difference in your life.Today, many religious communities struggle to care for their elderly members. Skyrocketinghealth care costs and decreased income make it increasingly difficult to provide necessarymedications, nursing care, and basic services. Aging convents and other facilities poseadditional challenges in terms of safety and handicap accessibility.I recognize this is but one of numerous worthy causes in need of support and that many in ourown community face financial difficulties. I ask you simply to give what you can. In thanksgivingfor all that senior religious have done, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund forReligious and in praying for God’s continued blessing on our nation’s elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests..Sincerely in Christ,Most Rev. Jesus ismy strength, confidante, and best friend. He listens to myproblems and helps me find solutions. Many times in thelast three years, when problems and suffering haveentered my life, I have chosen to go to Adoration. I arriveworried, upset, or with many questions on what I shoulddo or why something was happening in my life. When Ileave the chapel I have been calm, usually with ideas onhow to handle the situation, or what I needed to change toimprove the situation.Sometimes I have been inspired to open a book in thechapel, other times to write in a journal of what is goingon in my life. It helped me calm down. God made merealize what I must change or accept as God’s will. Ineither case, He gives me the strength I need to go on. Second Sunday of AdventDecember 4, 2011— Page NineThe Celebration of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin MaryWednesday, December 7thVIGIL MASS7:00 p.m.Thursday, Dec. 8thMASS8:00 a.m.7:00 p.m.This week we will celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We can praiseGod for revealing to us that what was done for Mary as a sign of God’s will for all of us, that we knowourselves as chosen by God and as existing to praise the glory of God’s grace. Mary was not chosenbecause she was righteous; she was made righteous by being chosen. Second Sunday of AdventDecember 4, 2011 — Page ElevenNicholas, An Advent SaintAdvent is the time when Christians prepare to greet Christ — who came as a babe in a manger, Who comes into ourlives each day, and Who will come again at the end of time. Advent is the time when people of faith are most at oddswith the culture. The Church calls people to focus on getting ready to receive Christ—preparing hearts and lives tomake room for Jesus, to live as he would have us live. How does Saint Nicholas fit into all of this?St. Nicholas is an Advent saint because his December 6th feast day always falls in earlyAdvent. However, Nicholas is a good Advent saint for more important reasons than thedate of his special day. St. Nicholas lived about 1,700 years ago and many stories andlegends have been passed down through the years. Nicholas was named the bishop ofMyra (which is in the country we call Turkey today). It was a poor and run-down diocese. When his wealthy parents died, he gave his wealth to the poor and devoted himself to theconversion of sinners. His many works of charity led to the tradition of giving presents onNicholas' feast day and at Christmas in his name. Nicholas died at Myra in 350. His popularity, already great, increased when his relics were brought to Bari, Italy, in 1087. Boththe Eastern and Western churches honor him. He is regarded as the specialpatron of children. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful followerof Jesus Christ. His life clearly reflected the way each one of us is called to showGod's love to others, especially those in need. Saint Nicholas helps us rememberChristmas is a feast of love, hope, kindness and generosity. In some parts of theworld, gifts and treats are given on this day. This Advent, Be Like Saint Nicholas...To be like Saint Nicholas, try to find some ways you can secretly be kind tomembers of your family and friends during Advent.Catholic Charities ClosesFoster Care ProgramIt is with deepest sadness that I informyou of the closing of our foster care programat Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Joliet. We have provided loving and exceptionalservices to children and their foster familiesfor over 50 years and our staff have clearlydemonstrated their commitment to the wellbeingof children and sacredness of family. Our foster families and the children entrusted in their care will betransitioning to other social service agencies in the area.
