To this end, Jesus came preaching acall to turn from sin and believe in the good news ofGod’s loving plan. As with Jonah and the firstdisciples, God continues to call others to join in Hiswork.• FIRST READINGThe Ninevites turned from their evil way (Jonah 3:1-5, 10).Jonah goes to Nineveh, a pagan city, and he preachesthat God is ready to punish the city for all of its sins. Thepeople respond to this announcement with a call torepentance. The king decrees a fast for everyone in thecity. He reasons that God might relent and forgive themtheir sins (which is exactly what happens). We are calledto examine our lives and turn from our sinful paths sothat we might respond to God’s call.• SECOND READINGThe world in its present form is passing away(1 Corinthians 7:29-31).Christians in the early days of the Church believed thatthe end of the world was at hand. Thus, Saint Paulinstructed this community to live as if our worldlyconcerns were no longer important. We do not knowwhen the world will end,, but we can still maintain aproper perspective on our problems if we view them inlight of eternity (if we do not allow ourselves to getcaught up in our everyday concerns.)• GOSPELRepent and believe in the Gospel (Mark 1:14-20).The Gospel passage recounts the call of the firstapostles: Peter and Andrew, James and John. Bothgroups of brothers were fisherman, and Jesus calledthem from their activities to become proclaimers ofthe Word of God. The time of fulfillment and theKingdom of God are that time when God’s law wouldbe observed in righteousness. All people would turntheir hearts back to the ways of the Lord. Jesus bothproclaimed the dawning of that era and was thepersonification of the Kingdom of God. This is theGood News (Gospel) that Jesus proclaims. These firstapostles left all that they had and they followed Jesuswherever He went. This is our call as well. We do notnecessarily have to leave our homes and families, butwe do have to live our Christian calling in such a waythat everything else (work, possessions, status, etc.)is secondary.• REFLECTIONYou might want to read the early part of Jonah’s storyleading to his ending up in the belly of a “great fish”for three days and nights — a biblical moment distinctin its appeal to the sense of smell, besides bringing outthe more playful side of Israel’s God. Coming mid‐story,we miss the struggle between Jonah’s stubbornness(“I won’t go to Nineveh!”) and God’s (“Yes, you will!”).But the emphasis falls on how powerful God’s wordproves to be, even when uttered by an willingprophet who wanted nothing more than to seeNineveh go up in smoke — people, property, andeven cows. Thomas Aquinas once said that whenyou love a person, their loves become your own.A pleasant enough thought, except when you extendit to God, and realize that it is not given to us todetermine what might fall outside of God’s loving,enormous embrace and desire to save. While theworld that is passing away is often marked by themess we humans have made of it, God is determinedto change this destructive course into a world renewedand wants us engaged in the work. We get a hint ofwhat this means when we hear the message Jesusproclaimed. God’s reign is at hand, so turn away fromsin and believe in the gospel — the good news Jesuspreached, the good news that is Jesus.
