The Honourable John F. McCartney of
Thunder Bay has been appointed
Regional Senior Judge of the Superior
Court of Justice for the Northwest
Region.
The Honourable Justice Annemarie
E. Bonkalo has been appointed an
Associate Chief Justice of the Ontario
Court of Justice
Ann Watson of St. Catharines has
been appointed to the Ontario Court of
Justice, assigned to St. Catharines.
The Advocates’ Society Mission Statement
The Advocates’ Society is the professional organization for advocates

Ben Zarnett would have spoken perfectly
for me on every detail of his piece
(“To Question or Not To Question...
That is the Question” - Spring 2005),
but for perhaps the most quotable line
in that piece. “A judicial decision is by
definition the product of something
more than previously-held personal
viewpoints,” he wrote. In Canada, UK,
and elsewhere in the Commonwealth,
this would be a truism. Judging, however,
from what goes on at times at the
American Supreme Court, I am not sure
that we can say the same for them.

But then again, this adds another angle
to the main point of Zarnett's argument
against importing the US style confirmation
process for our Supreme Court. In
America, they have a president. In
Canada, we have a prime minister, and
we like it that way.
