Paul Schabas is a senior litigation partner
at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP.
Paul has a B.A. (Hons.) and LL.B. from
the University of Toronto, and was called
to the bar in 1986. He has a wide-ranging
counsel practice, from complex commercial
litigation to white-collar criminal
and regulatory matters, to administrative
and public law. Paul frequently acts for
the media on defamation and freedom of
expression matters. He has been counsel
on significant cases dealing with
Charter and human rights issues, division
of powers and judicial independence.
He has appeared many times
before the Supreme Court of Canada,
including as counsel to the Canadian
Foundation for Children, Youth and the
Law on its challenge to the corporal punishment
defence. He is recognized by
Lexpert as a "leading practitioner" in
media and defamation law, and in public
law. Paul has taught for many years at
the University of Toronto and at
Osgoode Hall Law School. He has published
numerous articles and is a frequent
speaker at conferences. In June
2000 he delivered one of the Law
Society's "Special Lectures" on constitutional
law (freedom of expression), and
in April 2003 delivered another "Special
Lecture" on evidence in Charter cases.
Paul is chair of Pro Bono Law Ontario,
is on the executive of Ad IDEM
(Canadian Media Lawyers Association),
and is a director of the Canadian Civil
Liberties Association. He is a former
director of the National Youth Orchestra
of Canada and the Family Service
Association of Toronto, and is a pastchair
of the OBA’s Constitutional and
Civil Liberties Section.
