Is This the Right Time to Launch Telematics Services in SE Asia?
OEMs consider a range of factors when deciding whether to launch telematics in a new market, but
one of the most critical of those factors is whether that market is ready to support different types
of services. This is particularly true in emerging markets; where infrastructure, government policies
and even consumer needs are often less mature.
At SBD, we have developed a new methodology based on a ‘Readiness Index’ for evaluating the
potential for telematics within new markets, analysing the following factors:
Government Sector Readiness – Governments can play either a positive role in
promoting telematics (through clear ITS, IT, mapping and communications policies) or a
negative role (through fragmented or overly-restricted regulations).
Services Sector Readiness – The end-to-end service value chain for telematics can be
complex, which is why it is important for OEMs to understand the maturity of key players
such as telecom operators, call centre operators, billing providers and content providers.
Automotive Sector Readiness – A mature market for automotive products such as
navigation systems is also an important pre-requisite for telematics to flourish. Linked to
this, the availability of established telematics, mapping and traffic information players
within the local automotive market also helps to speed-up deployment.
Consumer Readiness – Last but not least, understanding the characteristics of consumers
is a vital step towards determining the readiness for telematics in each market.
80%
The first markets to which we have applied our methodology are in South East Asia, with the results
showing major opportunities in all three markets – but also significant differences in terms of the
readiness of each market.
Malaysia, where a number of vehicle manufacturers already offer accessory-fit Stolen Vehicle
Recovery (SVR) systems, is the most mature market with a Readiness Index approaching 70%.
Thailand is the first South East Asian market in which an OE telematics solution has been
launched (Toyota’s GBook integrated smartphone app), but according to SBD’s study, is less
mature with a Readiness Index of 62%. Indonesia is expected to become the largest market for
new car sales, but still lags far behind with a Readiness Index of only 55%.
