Bushi no Ichibun: Love and Honour - The Final Installment in Yoji Yamada’s Classic Samurai Trilogy<br />
Bushi no Ichibun is director Yoji Yamada’s follow up to his previous samurai trilogy films Tasogare<br />
Seibei and Kakushi Ken - Oni no Tsume both of which were popular JCCC movie night attractions.<br />
All three films are based on the novels of Shuhei Fujisawa.<br />
In this 2006 film, Takuya Kimura plays the main role as a blind samurai. Shinnojo Mimura<br />
became blind while working as a food-taster for his master. Though he had once given up hope and<br />
attempted suicide, he stopped himself for the sake of his beautiful wife, Kayo (Rei Dan). However,<br />
he finds Kayo is secretly meeting Shimada, a high-ranking samurai, in the hopes of finding financial<br />
support to maintain the house for Shinnojo. As Kayo’s sacrifice leaves him with nothing but agony,<br />
Shinnojo moves closer to his destiny.<br />
Mark Schilling of the Japan Times rates the film 4½ out of 5 stars and calls it the strongest of<br />
the trilogy. Nominated for 10 <strong>Japanese</strong> Academy Award including including best film, director, actor,<br />
actress and screenplay.<br />

Oh-oku: Women of the Inner Palace - Story of the Most Celebrated Romance Scandal in the Tokugawa Shogunate<br />
Enjoy the 2006 film version of the popular TV jidaigeki drama series “Oh-oku”, based on the Edo period practice of the shogun keeping a<br />
harem to bear successors.<br />
In seventeenth century Japan, the seventh Shogun Ietsugu comes to power at the age of four--obviously too<br />
young to play his role. As a result his retainers fight for the position of the Shogun’s primary supporter in hopes of<br />
surreptitiously usurping power. Meanwhile in the inner palace, the women of the ex-shogun’s are battling a similar<br />
type of power struggle. The plot revolves around a legendary power struggle, plots and intrigues between the young<br />
shogun’s natural mother--concubine to the previous Shogun--and his official wife, who must watch her stake in the<br />
bloodline fade.<br />
Directed by Toru Hayashi, Oh-oku stars Yukie Nakama (Shinobi), Yuko Asano and Mitsuhiro Oikawa.<br />

KAMP KODOMO SUMMER PROGRAM<br />
Don’t miss out on the all the summer fun at the JCCC!!! Kamp<br />
Kodomo is returning for another summer filled with cultural activities.<br />
Register now for a busy week filled with sessions covering a wide<br />
range of activities including martial arts, ikebana, origami, folklore,<br />
language, and so much more!<br />
The camp operates from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday to<br />
Friday. There will be three sessions offered: <strong>July</strong> 9 – 13, <strong>July</strong> 16<br />
– 20, and <strong>July</strong> 23 – 27. Fee for this program is $180 per child<br />
for a 5-day session. A 10 % discount will be applied for JCCC<br />
members and additional children from the same family will receive<br />
a 5% discount. Extended camp care is available from 8:00am to<br />
9:00am and from 4:30pm to 6:00pm with an additional cost of $35<br />
per session. Camp fees cover all materials, two nutritional snacks<br />
per day, and a special activity. Campers are required to bring a<br />
lunch and drink.<br />

and Kamp Kodomo’s maximum attendance is 40 children per<br />
session.<br />

JCCC FAMILY GOLF TOURNAMENT<br />
The JCCC is hosting the 11th Annual Family Golf Tournament on<br />
Sunday September 9 2007 at Rolling Hills Golf Club. This is a<br />
chance for families and friends to share a a fun day of golf - all skill<br />
levels welcome and there are lots of prizes to be won! After a great<br />
day of golfing, there will be presentations and a bento dinner back<br />
at the JCCC.<br />
We encourage everyone to join with grandparents, aunts,<br />
uncles, brothers, sisters, moms and dads, or just a group of friends.<br />
This non-competitive event can be played as a scramble or<br />
individual format. See the application form included in this newsletter<br />
or pick one up at the JCCC reception area. We also welcome hole<br />
sponsors - corporate or family - some sponsor levels include your<br />
green fees and contributes to our Heritage programming at the<br />
JCCC. Our biggest sponsor, Dundee Wealth Management (Marty<br />
Kobayashi), is also generously providing refreshments while out on<br />
the course!<br />
