Cover Concept
This refreshingly fresh cover visual depicts healthy
state of mind and physical condition of a joyful
person. By avoiding negative thoughts and habits, one
can remain happy which in turn speaks of a healthy
state.
The dew drops symbolise humour and laughter one
can enjoy while performing one's routine chores. An
apple is a symbolic representation of a healthy mind
and physique. Being almost spherical in shape, an
apple signifies totality.
Since Health is the theme of this topic, I thought I might share the six simple life style
rules which – can change your quality of life. Health for all is an achievable goal. KPCL
has always undertaken health programs with our dedicated CSR Team.
1. Getting regular and adequate amounts of sleep.
A regular amount of sleep is important to give your body a chance to restore and
regenerate not only the proverbial “batteries” but to attend to all of the metabolic
functions required by the body, such as regenerating old cells, getting rid of wastes
and repairing cell damage.
2. Eating regular well-balanced meals, including breakfast.
A healthy balanced diet can help provide energy, lower risks for certain diseases
– heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and cancers – while maintaining a normal
weight.
3. Engaging in regular physical activity.
Thirty minutes a day of regular physical activity contributes to health by reducing
the heart rate, decreasing the risk for cardiovascular disease and reducing the
amount of bone loss with age and osteoporosis.
4. Maintaining a healthy body weight.
Physical activity helps the body use calories more efficiently, thereby helping in
weight loss and maintenance. Additionally, sixty minutes of regular physical activity
will help in maintaining weight.
5. Not using tobacco products – smoking, chewing, snuff or others.
Chronic exposure to the nicotine in tobacco accelerate coronary artery disease,
peptic ulcer disease, reproductive disturbances, esophageal reflux, hypertension,
fetal illnesses and death and lead to delayed wound healing.
6. Using alcohol in moderation or not at all.
Moderate alcohol consumption (one drink for women, two for men) is associated
with a lower risk or heart disease. Higher levels of alcohol can lead to health and
behavioral problems, including an increased risk for high blood pressure, stroke,
heart disease, some cancers, accidents, violence, suicide and deaths in general.
“The part can
never be well
unless the whole
is well.”
COVER STORY
Healthy Wealthy and Wise
Ask most doctors and they will likely tell you : happy
people are healthier people. Happiness is an infectious
state that can definitely have an impact on your health.
That’s because your brain comes equipped with an inner
pharmacy that can help you be joyful and embrace life,
lending a hand to make you feel years younger.
Enjoying good health isn’t just about scoring good
numbers on a cholesterol test or passing a mammogram
with flying colors. While those are both good things, it’s
also important to have a healthy state of mind, to be
“wellderly.” Start working on being a “wellderly” person
early in life so that you are in good practice when it really
counts. That means never acting your age, and taking a
childlike approach to life.
People get stuck in ruts, whether they are good or bad
ones. Those who are feeling down train their muscles
and attitudes to stay that way. Their sour moods can be
reflected in their posture, clothing, hairstyle, and attitude.
In other words, they get stuck in their performances.
Eat Phytosterol
rich food
Phytosterol are compounds that
resemble cholesterol and are found in
beans, nuts, leafy vegetables etc. Add them
to salads or curries and consume regularly.
They compete with bad cholesterol (LDL)
for absorption in the digestive tract,
while they themselves are not easily
absorbed. Thus, they block
cholesterol absorption
and keep its level in
check.
Susamwad July to Sept. 2014
The reverse is also true, that happy people look upbeat
and peppy. They also benefit from neuropeptides like
endorphins and other chemicals that bolster the immune
system and promote well being.
Humor and laughter are two of the most important
weapons in the arsenal for leading a happy life. Find
share your sense of humor and use it to make everybody
laugh. Rite yourself a prescription for laughter – just
putting a smile on your face will make you feel better.
Two times a day, stand before a mirror and laugh for 15
seconds. What might feel unnatural at first eventually will
become routine. As actors say, “Fake it ‘til you make it.”
Another way to open your inner pharmacy of happiness
is to socialize, to connect, whether it’s with people, pets,
or places. Studies have shown that people who are 65
and older, live alone, and have a dog see the doctor 16
percent less than similar people who don’t have a dog.
Having someone or some living thing to care for besides
yourself often will open you up to the world around you.
Getting connected to spirituality also helps. People who
go to church, synagogue, a mosque, temples or find
a way to connect with their spiritual being are happier.
If that’s not your thing, try following a sports team or
a musical group. Music is a wonderful connector –
it bridges links between different areas of the brain,
tapping into that inner chemistry. Other key contributors
to being “wellderly” are exercising and getting enough
sleep.
Finally, be a role model for the young people around
you. Teach your children and grandchildren through
the example of your own happy life. Show them that it’s
not so bad to be old – it’s fun and stimulating. You can
still be creative, have causes, start new things, and get
educated. You’ll be happy and you’ll make them happy,
knowing that you are content. After all, happiness is
infectious.

COVER STORY
Exercising for
a while now ?
Switching the order of the exercises
in your regimen every day helps you
avoid repetition and cut boredom. Studies
show that boredom is a leading cause for
giving up exercise. Also, you will be able
to manage your activities better by
using the available equipment
rather than waiting for any
equipment to be free.
Committed To Health
and Hygiene
These women Walk and Talk Non-Stop so they can improve
hygiene and sanitation in these villages. Meet the women
who strongly believe that there is a spirit of ownership
among villagers that can be tapped into by someone within
their own community. And to honour this belief, they walk
for miles each day to inform and educate people about
sanitation and water issues. These are the wonderful Water
and Sanitation Promoters of rural Tamil Nadu.
Sanitation is a familiar term and is often misunderstood to
mean the building and using of toilets, but this isn’t true.
It covers a whole range of thought and action both preand
post- latrine use, which includes cleanliness, personal
hygiene and the sanitation safe disposal of urine and
faeces. Getting this message across in rural areas where
open defecation and overall lack of hygiene is widespread
is really important to tackling this problem.
Women have been chosen to spearhead the sanitation
revolution in rural Tamil Nadu. The organizations working to
promote sanitation in the region (in this case Leaf Society,
Namakkal) recruit motivated women to work as Water and
Sanitation Promoters in the villages they live in to spread
the word about sanitation and personal hygiene.
on various aspects of sanitation and personal hygiene, her
job is to pass on this training to the village children. She is
also the go-to contact between the villagers if they have
any doubts on anything related to sanitation. She advises
them on how to construct a toilet or get individual water
pipe connections for their homes and so on.
A soak pit toilet with a junction pipe for conversion into
a twin-pit toilet when required, constructed at one of the
villages
Two things qualify her for this role
– one, she has to be a resident of one of the villages in
the Panchayat and
– Two, she has to be very enthusiastic as she is the key
to building a foundation for a strong and motivated
field force. The Water and Sanitation Promoter’s
role is a big experiment on voluntaryism. It rides on
the belief that there is a spirit of ownership among
villagers that can be tapped into by someone within
their own community. For hardly Rs. 1,000 per month,
the WSP’s walk and talk nonstop!
The Water and Sanitation Promoter is a popular figure in
the villages. She talks to every family in the village, both
individually as well as in groups on a regular basis about
the benefits of having a toilet at home. She cycles, walks
and takes the bus to villages near and far. People have
come to trust her and make informed choices about having
toilets in their houses.
• WSP A bunch of children outside a toilet in Sanarpudur
village Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district.
• Water and Sanitation Promoter of the Panchayat visits
the local Panchayat run schools to spend some time
with the children.
• With the help of flash card and action songs, she tells
them why one should use the toilet and not go out in
the open.
COVER STORY
7
Over time, the children are acquainted with the concepts
of toilet and hygiene and no longer look at them as alien
elements in a village home. The time and effort put into
this has already borne fruit. Many children wash their hands
after using the toilet or before eating without fail now. Some
have also managed to convince their parents into building
separate toilets in their houses.
Here you see a group of children from Pallandanpatti
Viralimalai block of Pudukottai district reciting a poem on
why one should use a toilet.
The women of the house are more sensitive to the difficulties
of open defecation as they bear the brunt more than
men. Mothers want their children to relieve
themselves with dignity and this is one of
the main motivating factors behind the
improved toilet penetration in these
villages.
The child-mother communion
seems to be working wonders
in the villages in which these
organizations – Gramalay, Annai
Trust, Indo Trust and Leaf Society –
have been working in. Gnanasekaran
from Annai Trust in Pudukottai says
that the organizations themselves were
surprised by the motivation and initiative
these ladies have shown. He calls them the
‘hidden resources of the villages’, and rightly so. Even after
the organizations involved in these water and sanitation
projects leave the villages, they still have an individual who
can take the movement forward.
Open defecation is dying a slow death
in these villages. The process has been
initiated – one child at a time – one toilet
at a time.
COVER STORY
Walk Your Talk
• The human body is made to walk.
• Walking 30 minutes a day cuts the rate of people
becoming diabetic by more than half and it cuts the
risk of people over 60 becoming diabetic by almost 70
percent.
• Walking cuts the risk of stroke by more than 25 percent.
• Walking reduces hypertension. The body has over
100,000 miles of blood vessels. Those blood vessels
are more supple and healthier when we walk.
• Walking cuts the risk of cancer as well as diabetes and
stroke.
• Women who walk have a 20 percent lower likelihood
of getting breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of
getting colon cancer.
• Women with breast cancer who walk regularly can
reduce their recurrence rate and their mortality rate by
over 50 percent.
• The human body works better when we walk. The
body resists diseases better when we walk, and the
body heals faster when we walk.
• We don’t have to walk a lot. Thirty minutes a day has a
huge impact on our health.
• Men who walk thirty minutes a day have a significantly
lower level of prostate cancer. !
• For men with prostate cancer, studies have shown that
walkers have a 46 percent lower mortality rate.
• Walking also helps prevent depression, and people
who walk regularly are more likely to see improvements
in their depression.
• In one study, people who walked and took medication
scored twice as well in 30 days as the women who
only took the medication. Another study showed
that depressed people who walked regularly had a
significantly higher level of not being depressed in
a year compared to depressed people who did not
walk. The body generates endorphins when we walk.
Endorphins help us feel good.
Strengthens the heart. Walking strengthens bones
• Walking improves the circulatory system.
• Walking generates positive neurochemicals. Healthy
eating is important but dieting can trigger negative
neurochemicals and can be hard to do.
Relax your eyes:
Try the 20-20-20 rule !
Spending too much time in front of the
computer strains the eyes and causes eye
dryness leading to irritation, pain and vision
problems.
To avoid eye strain look at an object at
least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Repeat this every 20
minutes.
Hold your
head high
Move
shoulders
naturally, freely
Swing your arms
in a natural motion
while walking
briskly
Focus your
eyes 15 feet to
20 feet in front
of your
Keep your chin
parallel to the
ground
Gently tighten
stomach
muscles
Tuck your
pelvis under
your torso
Position your
feet parallel to
each other, if
comfortable,
and a shoulderwidth
apart
• Walking generates positive neurochemicals. People
look forward to walking and enjoy walking.
• And research shows that fit beats fat for many people.
Walking half an hour a day has health benefits that
exceed the benefits of losing 20 pounds.
• When we walk every day, our bodies are healthier and
stronger. A single 30 minute walk can reduce blood
pressure by five points for over 20 hours.
• Walking reduces the risk of blood clots in your legs.
• People who walk regularly have much lower risk of
deep vein thrombosis.
• People who walk are less likely to catch colds, and
when people get colds, walkers have a 46 percent
shorter symptom time from their colds.
• Walking improves the health of our blood, as well.
Walking is a good boost of high density cholesterol
and people with high levels of HDL are less likely to
have heart attacks and stroke.
• Walking significantly diminishes the risk of hip fracture
and the need for gallstone surgery is 20 to 31 percent
lower for walkers.
• Walking is the right thing to do. The best news is that
the 30 minutes doesn’t have to be done in one lump
of time. Two 15 minute walks achieve the same goals.
Three 10 minute walks achieve most of those goals.
• We can walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15
minutes at night and achieve our walking goals.
• Walking feels good. It helps the body heal. It keeps
the body healthy. It improves our biological health, our
physical health, our psychosocial health, and helps
with our emotional health. Walking can literally add
years entire years to your life.
Its good to walk!
Be good to yourself. Be good to your body.
Dealing With Dengue
• Dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by the
dengue virus which is also known.
• Known as Hemorrhagic Fever or Breakbone Fever.
• Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a more severe form of
the viral illness. This form of dengue fever can be lifethreatening
and can progress to the most severe form
of the illness, dengue shock syndrome. Severe disease
is more common in babies and young children. Women
are more at risk than men. Dengue can be life-threatening
in people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and
asthma.
Routes of Transmission
Dengue virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes,
particularly Aedes Aegypti. They bite primarily during the day.
Dengue can also be transmitted via infected blood products
and through organ donation. Vertical transmission (from
mother to child) during pregnancy or at birth.
How Do Aedes Mosquitoes Transmit Diseases...
Mosquito bites and sucks blood containing the virus from an
infected person. And passes the virus to healthy people when
it bites them.
Signs and Symtoms
• The incubation period (time between exposure and onset
of symptoms) ranges from 4–7 days.
• Sudden-onset high fever 40C (1040F), headache (typically
located behind the eyes), muscle and joint pain, and a
rash.
• The course of infection is divided into three phases: Febrile,
Critical, and Recovery.
Diagnosis
• Dengue fever may be diagnosed by virus isolation in
cell cultures, nucleic acid detection by PCR, viral antigen
detection or specific antibodies.
• Tests for dengue virus-specific antibodies, types IgG and
IgM, can be useful in confirming a diagnosis in the later
stages of the infection.
COVER STORY
Warning signs
Abdominal pain
Ongoing vomiting
Liver enlargement
Mucosal bleeding
High hematocrit with low platelets
Lethargy
Prevention
• There are no approved vaccines for the dengue virus.
Prevention thus depends on control of and protection from
the bites of the mosquito that transmits it.
• The World Health Organization has recommended an
Integrated Vector Control program.
• People can prevent mosquito bites by wearing clothing
that fully covers the skin, using mosquito netting while
resting, and/or the application of insect repellent.
Change water in vases on alternate days
Remove water from flowerpot plates on alternate days
Turn over all pails and water storage containers
Cover bamboo pole holders when not in use
Clear blockages and put insecticide in roof gutters
monthly
Do not litter. Rubbish such as cups
and bottles can collect rain water
and breed mosquitoes
Treatment
• There are no specific treatment for
dengue fever.
• Treatment depends on the
symptoms, varying from oral
rehydration therapy at home
with close follow-up, to hospital
admission with administration of intravenous fluids and/or
blood transfusion.
• A decision for hospital admission is typically based on the
presence of the “warning signs” listed in the above slide,
especially in those with preexisting health conditions.
Brushing up Your Botany
Scientific name – Boerhavia Diffusa
Class – Nyctaginacere
Local name – Khapra, Tambadi Vasu, Ghetuli, Punarnava
English – Spreading Hogweed
• Ghetuli grows in varied
environments without being
choosey about soil and can grow
in tough conditions.
• It grows up by creeping along the
soil. Its root is thick, whitish and
embedded deep underground.
The stem with many branches is thin
and blackish red in color, which is
somewhat swollen at the joints.
Each pair of leaves face each other of
which one leaf is larger than the other.
They are oval, about, measuring 1
centimeter length and 4 centimeters.
The top of the leaf is whitish and the
surface below is green.
Flowers are small reddish pink and
appear on long stems in clusters with
each cluster having 3 to 10 flowers.
The flowers are stemless. There are
male and female flowers with a whorl
of 5 petals joined together.
Fruits and flowers are borne
throughout the year.
Ghetuli is a good, nutritious vegetable
which is available aplenty in the
rainy season. Its tender leaves are
used to make this dish. It is a good
alternative to a nonvegetarian diet.
When consumed in the early stages
of jaundice it expells the bile stored
in the body through excreta, thus
reducing the symptoms.
In diseases connected to kidneys,
water retention and body swelling
takes place. The production of urine
is less. In such a condition, ingesting
Panarvasu is beneficial. It increases
blood pressure in the kidneys which
removes the extra water in our body
thus reducing risk. Even in case of
Dropsy and Pluerisy it has the same
effect.
The heart becomes sluggish and
gives in to palpitation, swollen feet,
breathlessness. Consuming Ghetuli
helps getting its tone back.
Lack of appetite and other such
ailments are also treated by Ghetuli.
Ghetuli is a medicinal herb and is
widely used in a lot of medicines. It
is very rich in protien; rich in vitamin
K plus B complex and minerals like
iodine, iron, magnesium and sodium.
It is a remedy for
night blindness, eye
infections also.
COVER STORY
OVERVIEW ON
Organizational Health Disciplines
Today, competitive advantage doesn’t go to the company
with the best widget. It goes to the organization that can
reinvent itself and defend itself from attackers – wherever
they may come from – better than anyone else.”
Overview
Organizational health is about making a company
function effectively by building a cohesive leadership
team, establishing real clarity among those leaders,
communicating that clarity to everyone within the
organization and putting in place just enough structure to
reinforce that clarity going forward.
The advantage of organizational health is undeniable and
massive. Companies get more done in less time. They
avoid losing their best people. They identify problems
earlier and solve them faster. They beat rivals who waste
time, money and energy fighting among themselves, which
ultimately drives away good employees and customers.
The Four Disciplines
What exactly does an organization have to do to get
healthy? There are four simple – but again, difficult – steps.
They include :
Build a Cohesive Leadership Team - The first is all about
getting the leaders of the organization to behave in a
functional, cohesive way. If the people responsible for
running an organization, whether that organization is a
corporation, a department within that corporation, a start-up
company, a restaurant, a school or a church, are behaving
in dysfunctional ways, then that dysfunction will cascade
into the rest of the organization and prevent organizational
health. And yes, there are concrete steps a leadership
team can take to prevent this.
Leader-driven : Leaders are the catalysts for performance,
setting high expectations and supporting the organization
in achieving them.”
Create Clarity
The second step for building a healthy organization is
ensuring that the members of that leadership team are
intellectually aligned around simple but critical questions.
Leaders need to be clear on topics such as why the
organization exists to what its most important priority is for
the next few months, leaders must eliminate any gaps that
may exist between them, so that people one, two or three
levels below have complete clarity about what they should
do to make the organization successful.
Market-focused
Shaping market trends and building a portfolio of strong
and innovative brands keep the business ahead of the
pack.”
Over-Communicate Clarity
Only after these first two steps are in process (behavioral
and intellectual alignment), can an organization undertake
the third step: over-communicating the answers to the
questions. Leaders of a healthy organization constantly –
and I mean constantly – repeat themselves and reinforce
what is true and important. They always err on the side of
saying too much, rather than too little. This quality alone
sets leaders of healthy organizations apart from others.
Execution Edge : discipline, sound execution, and
continuous improvement are the foundation for great
performance.
Reinforce Clarity - Finally, in addition to over-communicating,
leaders must ensure that the answers to the critical
questions are reinforced repeatedly using simple human
systems. That means any process that involves people,
from hiring and firing to performance management
and decision-making, is designed in a custom way to
intentionally support and emphasize the uniqueness of the
organization.
Knowledge Core : “talent and knowledge are the
organization’s most important assets, and it develops and
deploys them effectively.”
Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
Swachata Abhiyaan Undertaken at Saswad w. e. f. 7th June, 2014
On reading the above caption, you may have thought of
some '5S’ or an IMS initiatives we are talking about. Not
so really. What we are talking about is the Cleanliness
Campaign we have all committed to. We have made it a
rule to clean our workplace every Wednesday and Saturday
from 8 am to 9 am, religiously.
While following the cleanliness regime, music is played to
get some enjoyment while taking care of housekeeping.
At the end of the session, a stock of the work done is
undertaken and the next session work is decided.
The campaign has established a bonding between
colleagues. Prizes are awarded to the most effective
contributor of the clean up drive. People are vying for the
award for the best ‘cleaner’ during the schedule. The other
Motivator is pride they feel about the well kept and clean
premises.
Kirloskar CNG Package : A Green
Solution for Environment and Health
Have you ever wondered, while travelling by Cars, PMPML Buses or Auto Rickshaw, that what fuel is used in them? How it is
processed? What impact it has on Environment? Which one is better fuel for vehicles and Environment? You might be thinking
about Petrol and Diesel.
• But nowadays Many of PMPML Buses and Auto Rickshaws in city use CNG as a fuel. Some of the car models are
developed to run on CNG.
• Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is Natural Gas stored at high pressure in specially designed gas tanks.
• The conversion of Natural gas to compressed natural gas (CNG) takes place in compressor package.
You will feel great to know that KPCL is major manufacturer and supplier of such CNG packages, which are used to process,
store, transport and distribute Compressed Natural Gas. All CNG filling stations in Pune are supplied by KPCL. We have provided
more than 250 CNG packages all over the country so far.
CNG is comparatively cleaner fuel with less green house gas emissions so it is less hazardous to environment. We promote
use of CNG as a fuel through our CNG packages and we
believe making CNG package is our small contribution to
save environment and mother earth for making it better place
for living.
What is Natural Gas?
Natural Gas is an organic compound that is found deep
within the earth. It is a fossil fuel formed over millions of
years of geological pressures and changes. Natural gas is
primarily methane (more than 87%) comprised of hydrogen
and carbon. It is a safe fuel source that is commonly
used in homes and businesses for heating, lighting and
cooking. Natural gas contributes more than 21% of the
world’s energy production today.
What is CNG?
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is nothing but a natural
gas which is compressed to pressure of 250 – 255 Bar.
It is substitute for gasoline (petrol), diesel or propane
fuel. Although its combustion does produce greenhouse
gases, it is a more economical, domestically available,
environmentally clean alternative to those fuels, and it is
much safer than other fuels in the event of a spill as natural
gas is lighter than air, and disperses quickly when released.
About CNG Package
CNG package mainly consist of reciprocating compressor,
engine/motor, heat exchanger, acoustic enclosure, suction
volume bottles, suction scrubber cum blow-down vessel,
control systems, instruments, piping and tubing, filters,
coupling, priority panel etc. Compressor is either engine
or motor driven. In case of engine driven packages part of
the gas from suction to compressor is used as fuel to Gas
Engine, so no separate fuel is required to run the engine.
CNG packages are installed at gas filling stations. The
filling stations are mainly located in cities and on highways.
Therefore, the noise from the compressor and engine /
motor installed in CNG package must not be high enough
to cause noise pollution. Acoustic enclosure is used for
this purpose. It reduces noise level transmitted from the
compressor, motor or engine to outside. It also guides
the air flow inside the CNG package for proper cooling &
ventilation. The acoustic enclosure also gives an aesthetic
look to CNG package.
How natural gas is used for powering vehicles?
This is accomplished by the following steps :
1. Natural gas is compressed and enters the vehicle
or cascades through the natural gas dispenser or fill
post.
2. It flows into high-pressure cylinders that are located
on the vehicle.
3. When the driver steps on the accelerator, the natural
gas leaves the on-board storage cylinder, passes
through the high-pressure fuel line and enters the
engine compartment.
4. Gas then enters the regulator, which reduces pressure
from up to 3,600 psi to approximately atmospheric
pressure.
5. The natural gas solenoid valve allows natural gas
to pass from the regulator into the gas mixer or fuel
injectors.
Are natural gas powered vehicles safe?
Natural Gas is lighter than air. This means that it will not
puddle (like gasoline) or sink to the ground like propane,
which is heavier than air. Instead, Natural Gas will rise and
dissipate in the atmosphere. Natural gas also has a higher
ignition temperature. This means that it is much harder to
ignite. Also the storage systems used for compressed
natural gas are infinitely stronger that the gasoline tanks
found on cars and trucks today.
How CNG contribute to save Environment?
• One of the most notable facts about natural gas is
that most of the natural reserves of natural gas field
are underutilized.
• It is a greener fuel. The emissions and hydrocarbons
that are released as a byproduct of CNG usage are
lesser than those created by regular fuel.
• Carbon monoxide emissions are down by 70-85%
while hydrocarbon levels are reduced by 40-60%.
• Emissions of carbon dioxide are 45% lesser than
other conventional fuels and 30% less than oil. In
comparison to oil and coal, natural gas releases
very small amounts of Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
oxides.
• As natural gas burns cleanly, it doesn't leave behind
any unpleasant soot, ash, or odors. Particulates from
natural gas production are 90 percent lower than oil
and 99 percent lower than coal combustion.
• Natural gas is easier to preserve than other fuels. It can
be stored and transported through pipelines, small
storage units, cylinders or tankers on land and sea
• Natural gas is less expensive than gasoline.
• Using CNG makes the engine cleaner and more
efficient. Being a gaseous fuel, CNG mixes easily
and evenly in air. Unlike gasoline, CNG does not
produce harmful carbon deposits when combusted.
This results to a cleaner and more efficient engine
as well as longer lasting spark plugs and catalytic
converters. Oil changes are also minimized because
of carbon deposits that contaminate the oil is
eliminated.
• Switching to CNG can help ease the
country’s dependence to foreign oil
whose price continue to fluctuate.
ECO SAVVY
Save our SKY
Ozone layer depletion, is simply the wearing out (reduction) of the amount of ozone in the stratosphere. Unlike pollution,
which has many types and causes, Ozone depletion has been pinned down to one major human activity.
Industries that manufacture things like insulating foams, solvents, soaps, cooling things like Air Conditioners, Refrigerators
and ‘Take-Away’ containers use something called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These substances are heavier than air, but
over time, (2-5 years) they are carried high into the stratosphere by wind action.
Ozone Day : 16th September signifies
for the world as ‘The International Day for
the Preservation of the Ozone Layer’, as
proclaimed by UN General Assembly.
On this day of 1987, ‘Montreal Protocol’
was signed on substances that deplete
ozone layer, which came into effect in
1989.
KPCL took the initiative to support the
sensitive cause of prevention of ozone
layer depletion and celebrated ‘Ozone
Day’ to mark 25 years since Montreal
Protocol. The theme ‘Ozone- the Earth’s
PPE’ was analogous to KPCL’s concern
of human safety. The day was packed
with activities and events which were
intended to create not only awareness
about ozone depletion but also appeal
to the core of each and every individual
involved in the company.
Ozone destruction by
Chlorine
Depletion begins when CFC’s
get into the stratosphere. Ultra
violet radiation from the sun
breaks up these CFCs. The
breaking up action releases
Chlorine atoms. Chlorine
atoms react with Ozone,
starting a chemical cycle that
destroys the good ozone in
that area. One chlorine atom
can break apart more than
100,000 ozone molecules.
Condenser Story
Let me tell you a condenser story,
an innovative product enriching glory
Navy had faced problems many,
Leaking condensers causing worry,
MOD (Ministry of Defense) was in
Willing to spend a lot of money,
but no one was finding option any
As task was difficult challenges heavy,
pride at stake with our own Navy
Long term solutions just find any,
quality matters don’t see penny
Replace the condensers cause of
worry,
how can KPCL just say sorry?
Size was constraint shipping-in tricky,
even tilted condenser must perform
its duty
refrigerant vary should not matter any
Not allowed to cut ship side any,
how can one solve the ‘transport
query’?
Thought thought thought &
discussions many, ‘Innovative-
Design’ solved the query
Task was not over as tubes weren’t
Importance of Supply Chain in Successful
Project Management
On time implementation of the projects within budgeted
cost is very important; and a strong and dedicated supply
chain management system plays a key role in the timely
completion of any successful project.
These are the key disciplines of project management and
its advantages –
• Scheduling and Planning :
One of the key factors of project management is developing
and maintaining accurate delivery schedules that take into
account project dependencies and resources.
• Risk Management :
Understanding the risk and planning to prevent both cost
and schedule to ensure continuity of supply.
• Quality Systems :
It is a part of any project to ensure that quality systems
are built into any project and relevance to supply chain
process.
• Financial Awareness :
Ensuring that the financial costs for executing must be
covered as a key task.
gßbm` MoZMo _hÎd
• Communication :
This is a key element of any business which plays very
important role in supply chain management.
• Role & Responsibilities :
A good project manager must ensure that responsibilities
need to identify and have clarity within key personnel.
The key role for a project manager is the responsibilities
for planning, coordinating, controlling and executing a
given task of the project while juggling resources, risk
on receipt of enquiry went to actual user of VAC on site, gave
technical presentation on our Chiller’s USP. Convinced user
so that the recommendation goes on TOP level. At the same
time studied the problems associated with competitors chillers
analysis and gives report to customer's Works Manager. Our
competitors tried to convert the enquiry specifications, so
that KPCL goes out of the race. But consistent and quality
efforts resulted in order booking of 1 x 200 TR VAC.
Second case is Citrus Foods Processing. In this case,
technical recommendation was to be given by the Mumbai
based consultant who dealt with our competitor several
times. Our Mr. Snehal gave several technical presentations
at various levels in consultants organization, ultimately
our end customer got recommendation for K-VAC. Our
competitors handled the case on basis of huge reference list
and discounted prices. But on the basis of superior product
quality, user awarded the order on us for 1 x 150 TR VAC.
Result :
1) Order Booked of M/s Nitrex Chemicals (INR 2.55 Mn).
2) Order Booked of M/s Citrus food Processing India Pvt.
Ltd. (INR 2.30 Mn)
Ashish Patil – KPCL received an export order from
Nigeria for supplying of 3500 SMH CNG package with
Ariel make compressor and Waukesha Make Engine.
This was our first 3500 SCMH capacity compressor
package with the use of Ariel compressor for the first
time in our package.
Ashish Patil was given responsibility for executing this
project. Being an export project, there were many constraints
like size, weight, maintenance spacing in package,
aesthetic look and time schedule. This included witnesing
the inspection by Ariel USA and certifying our debut Ariel
compressor package. With the help of the Design Team,
Ashish optimiized the package ensuring ample maintenance
space and at the same time acertaining the pacakge is not
too bulky. From aesthetic point of view, he did the routing of
piping in a proper manner and provided various platforms
from mainteneance. Inspection of packaging work by Ariel
USA and India team was conducted and we were certified
with positive comments from their end. The package was
then made ready within CDD and inspection with No Load
mechanical trial was conducted satisfactorily. Ashish took
care of Export quality packing and lifting arrangements,
which were also a new experience for us.
Package was dispatched from our works on 8th July, 2014.
Ratnakar Ghodake – In July 2014, we were to
complete two Kirloskar Transmission units. For this we
had to complete nos. of Flange Guide Wheels which
takes at least 25 days on copy milling machine. we
have only one operator for roughing and for finishing
on copy milling machine, and already 15th of July was
over. It was just impossible to complete the job using
old process. At this stage, Ratnakar suggested the
idea of processing on CNC machine. He arranged fixture
and tooling in-house. We completed the two transmissions.
Result :
1) Deskilling of work which needed time as bargainable
skilled operators are getting retired.
2) No. of workstations reduced to one as against two
3) Eliminated extra set ups.
4) Floor to floor time reduced to 10.00 hrs from 44 hrs. More
than 400 % improvement in productivity.
Ananthselvan – In TRM, we have to process Flange
Guide Wheels for Kirloskar Transmission. Process
of the Flange Guide Wheel was very outdated. The
machines used for this process are also old which
are often under breakdown. We desperatly required
high skilled operators. When we decided to process
this component on CNC machine, there was no
program and even we do not have 3D programming.
Ananthselvan took sincere interest in resolving this issue. He
designed a program and took the trial on dummy job which
was conducted successfully.
Bottleneck removed, Deskilling of the process, Cycle time is
Reduced to 8 hrs. and Reduced setting time to 1 hr.
September 2014
A V Kshirsagar – For the last 25 years, we are in
business of Kirloskar Transmission and right from
the day of collaboration we are using the same
process of Hurth cutting for Output shaft and 5
other components. For this, we were using old
jig mill machine and indexing attachment which
requires highly skilled operator. But over the years,
we are left with only one, by which we can use only one
shift per day and take too much process time. Now-adays
by wear and tear, both machine and attachment
are under frequent breakdown. Spare parts are also not
available from the manufacturer. Mr. Kshirsagar suggested
the new process implanted on Axia 55 HMC machine. Job
was clamped on the same fixture and cutting tool was also
used from the same conventional machine. Indexing was
achieved by continues indexing table (which we have
installed six months back). Hurth angle was achieved by
CNC program (on conventional machine we were using
sine table). By this, we are able to process each Hurth
operation within 6 hrs.
Result :
1) Bottleneck of the process eliminated.
2) Floor to floor time reduced to 6.00 hrs. from 16 hrs.
leading to productivity improvement of 250%
3) Deskilling of activity.
Piyush Oswal – KPCL had introduced new product
into the market – Vapor Absorption Chiller (VAC) a
while ago. We have been getting regular enquiries
but were not able to book regular orders. We were
only submitting quotations but not getting orders.
Piyush Oswal undertook an analysis. He found
that our presentation needs improvement. Subsequently
he studied competitor’s product, restudied our product.
Made necessary improvements in KPCL offer and KPCL
product presentation.
Piyush learned art of making effective presentation and
was able to highlight the pain points of the customer.
He travelled to various customer places for discussions.
Based on the same he was successful in convincing
customers to opt for KPCL VAC.
The results were impressive –
1. We were able to book 4 orders (cumulative order value
of ` 1.36 Crore) within 2 months. Major of the orders
booked were from the customers who were using the
competitor’s product for many years and were loyal to
competition.
2. Out of the 4 orders – one order booked was for our
Highest Capacity model i.e. 500 TR.
Umesh Palange – For the project R5100 Technip,
we had issued an order for Heat Exchangers
and Pressure Vessels on Ador Welding Ltd.,
Chinchwad. The material was delayed for some
reason pertaining to planning and procurement of
the raw material at their end. After taking stock of
the progress, delay was estimated for more than
one month. This was attracting LD for the whole project.
Umesh Palange took considerable efforts to expedite the
delivery. He sorted all the issues related to coordinating
with our Engineering department. He even went to subsupplier
level to expedite the material. He has helped
Ador in shopfloor planning on day-to-day basis. To his
credit are also coordination for TPI inspection activities to
How to Lose Weight – AND KEEP IT OFF !
This informative quiz help you keep those kilos off !
• Omitting meals is a good way to lose weight.
WRONG ! When you skip breakfast and lunch, you are so
famished by dinner that you eat more than if you had eaten
moderately during the day. Further, taking one big meal a
day is associated with increased fat production, elevated
cholesterol and impaired glucose tolerance.
• Snacks are fattening, not meals.
WRONG ! Whether you call your meal a snack or a meal,
if you consume more calories than your body needs, you
will gain weight. Snacking between meals may help some
to eat less later, thus helping in losing weight.
• Taking diuretics is a good way to lose weight.
WRONG ! Diuretics may dangerously dehydrate a person
and are not indicated for weight loss. If you suspect you
have a water retention problem, see a doctor.
• If you eat the same amount of food each year, you will
gradually put on weight as you grow older.
CORRECT ! As you age, your body requires less energy
to satisfy is metabolic needs. Also, physical activity may
decrease after young adulthood. So if your food intake
remains constant, you will gain weight.
• An overweight person who regains weight he/she has
lost is no worse off than before.
WRONG ! Losing and re-gaining weight repeatedly is
more harmful than simply staying overweight. Blood-
pressure and serum cholesterol can increase abnormally
during periods of weight gain, and may not return to normal
during weight loss.
• If you strictly adhere to your diet, you will lose weight
every week.
WRONG ! Every dieter reaches a plateau at some time. A
number of factors can halt weight loss temporarily. If you
stick on with the regimen, the kilos will resume coming off.
• A couple of drinks can’t be harmful; its just liquid.
WRONG ! Alcohol is high in calories; and it may even
stimulate your appetite.
HEALTH CAPSULES
A ‘Rainbow’ on Our Plate
Which Color Do You Eat?
A healthy diet is one that helps maintain or improve overall
health. A healthy weight is a balance between energy
consumed and energy that is ‘burnt off’. Here are some
Recommended allowances of nutrients
Men Women
Energy (kcal) 2500 2000
Protein (g) 55 45
Carbohydrates (g) 300 230
Sugar (g) 120 90
Fat (g) 95 70
Saturates (g) 30 20
Fibre (g) 24 24
lt (g) 6 6
Colors of Vegetables and their nutrient value
Red and Orange
Red and orange fruits and vegetables are among the
highest in vitamin C. A one-half-cup serving of red bell
pepper provides 95 milligrams of vitamin C, which is about
25 milligrams more than a medium orange -- the popular
gold standard for vitamin C. One cup of strawberries
contains 85 milligrams. However, some red fruits and
vegetables are relatively low on the vitamin C scale, while
some non-red vegetables are good vitamin C providers.
Green
When looking to boost your iron levels, go for the green.
Blue and Purple
The blue compound that makes blueberries blue is a
powerful antioxidant called anthocyanin that may protect
against cancer.
Black
Dark pigmentation in vegetables is a reliable measure of
antioxidant value. Black, or wild, rice; black lentils; and
black beans all provide high levels of antioxidants relative
to their lighter-colored counterparts. Black rice contains
70 percent more protein and twice as much copper as
brown rice, though it is lower in manganese and zinc than
its fairer-hued relative, according to Purdue University.
However, white beans provide more iron, potassium and
protein than black beans.
A thumb rule for your diet
Have breakfast like a KING
Lunch like a QUEEN and,
Dinner like a BEGGAR
40
Are we thinking clearly and effectively
on how to handle opportunities as well
as conflicts? Do we know what form
of thinking is the most appropriate in
each situation? How can we improve
the way we think as a team? There
are different ways of thinking that can
help us analyze situations and reach
decisions in the most productive
way and with the least conflict.
We seem to be jugglers in life, striving
to handle the information coming
to us at an incredible speed. Our
emotions are set off by thousands
of stimuli. We try to reason logically
about what is happening or could
happen to us; we have hopeful
visions, pessimistic projections and
creative ideas. Also, as we face
critical situations at work, we may
be thinking about our children, our
homes and our families. It’s often
difficult to focus.
The Six Thinking Hats
ETCETERA
The Six Thinking Hats
The main difficulty in thinking is confusion.
Edward de Bono
Developed by Dr. Edward de Bono,
the Six Thinking Hats is a simple and
effective parallel thinking process
that helps people become more
productive, focused, and mindfully
involved. You learn to separate
thinking into six distinct modes,
which are identified with their own
metaphorical “hat.” By mentally
wearing and switching “hats,” you
change your mode of thinking.
“The Six Thinking Hats will help you
increase the constructive output
from meetings and decrease
meeting duration; explore each
situation or problem and generate
alternatives that go beyond obvious
solutions; and use “parallel thinking”
techniques to avoid adversarial
thinking and encourage ideas.
To Ensure the Method Works
For the method to work, intentions
must lead to performance. “Intention
without action does not create
transformation.” “No matter how
great our intentions are, if we don’t
move in the right direction, our best
aspirations to improve our ways
of thinking are useless. De Bono
asserts that intention is the first step,
but we need structures to carry that
intention into action and transform it
into results. We need structures for
our thinking process to be become
as productive as possible. That’s
where the six “hats” come in:
White Hat – Information : it is neutral
and objective. It deals with objective
facts and figures. “Do not interpret.
Consider only the facts, please.” It’s
“pure intellect.”
Red Hat – Intuition, emotions,
and feelings: it suggests rage,
fury, passion. It provides the
emotional point of view, what the
person wearing this hat feels about
what is being analyzed. “I don’t
like what I’m seeing.” “Why?”
“It doesn’t matter, I just don’t like it.”
It’s the “beating heart.”
Black Hat – Criticism, carefulness,
pessimism : it is sad and negative.
It covers the negative aspects
of why something cannot be
done. “This doesn’t fit. This won’t
work because…” It’s the “devil’s
advocate.”
Yellow Hat – Benefits, values,
profits: it is happy and positive.
It optimistically covers hope,
stimulating positive thought, finding
the advantages of the suggested
idea or situation being analyzed. “I
like this because…” It’s the “bright
sun.”
Green Hat – Creativity, alternatives,
and possibilities: it is vegetation and
fertile growth. In our Indian culture, it
is hope and abundance. It suggests
the creativity and new ideas about
the situation being analyzed. “What
if we…” “Hey, let’s do this!” It’s the
“fertile tree.”
Blue Hat – Control of the process:
it’s cold and, like the sky, it’s over
and above everything. It deals with
control and organization of the
thought process, as well as the use of
the other hats. “Hey, let’s take it step
by step. Let’s not get confused.” It’s
the “orchestra conductor.”
The Six-Thinking-Hats method can
help you develop your personal
thinking processes. However, it is
particularly useful to ensure your
team becomes more productive
when analyzing and deciding
strategies and possibilities.
Use these ideas to ensure your
thinking and the thinking of your team
become increasingly clear, creative
and productive.
