SAINT PATRICK'S DAY AND FESTIVAL 전 세계에서 축하하는 ‘성 패트릭의 날(3월 17일)’은 아일랜드의 국경일로 수호성인인 패트릭 성인(서기 387-461)의 죽음을 기리는 날입니다. 패트릭 성인은 5세기에 가톨릭을 전파하신 분으로 전설에 따르면 아일랜드에서 뱀을 몰아냈다고 전해집 니다. 오늘날 성 패트릭의 날은 전 세계에서 특정 종교나 민족적 정체성보다는 아일랜드 사람들의 포용성과 다양성을 축하 하는 날로 자리 잡고 있습니다. 더블린에서는 며칠에 걸쳐 축제를 진행하기도 합니다. IN KOREA: 한국에서는 1976년부터 다양한 방식으로 ‘성 패트릭의 날’을 축하해 왔습니다. IAK가 처음 공식적으로 페스티벌과 퍼레이드를 진행한 것은 2001년으 로, 매년 3월 17일에 가까운 토요일에 페스티벌을 열고 있습니다. 퍼레이드는 교통상황 때문에 열리지 못할 때도 있습니다. Saint Patrick's Day is Ireland's national day, celebrated throughout the world on the 17th of March each year, the anniversary of Saint Patrick's death. Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461) is the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick was a preacher in the fifth century, and according to legend, banished all the snakes from Ireland! Nowadays, Saint Patrick's Day is generally seen as a day to celebrate the inclusiveness and diversity of 'Irishness', rather than being linked to any one religious or ethnic identity. In Dublin, the Saint Patrick's Day festival is held over many days with a large parade, music events and many other street parties and activities. IN KOREA: There has been some form of celebration in Korea for Saint Patrick's Day since 1976, but the first official festival and parade organised by the Irish Association of Korea was held in 2001. The IAK organise a festival in Korea as close to the date of the 17th of March as possible. So far, the festival has taken place in many different locations throughout Seoul. Unfortunately, it is not always possible for logistical reasons to include a parade each year. As part of the festival, the IAK usually hold IN KOREA: 7 HOOLEY The word Hooley is an old word in Ireland meaning 'party'. ‘훌리’는 ‘파티’를 뜻하는 아일랜드의 옛말입니다. some kind of Hooley. This also serves as a fundraiser for the Association. On occasion, there is also a ball called 'The Emerald Ball', and every Christmas a themed Night of Music. IN KOREA: IAK에서는 페스티발의 일환으로 ‘훌리’를 펼칩니다. 훌리를 통해 IAK를 위한 기금을 모집하기도 하는데, 경우에 따라 ‘에머랄드 무도회’나 매년 크리스 마스에는 ‘음악의 밤’와 같은 행사를 열기도 합니다.
THE SHAMROCK The Shamrock (similar to a clover), like the colour green, has traditionally been associated with Ireland and appears as an emblem or on the emblem of many sporting and government organisations representing Ireland. According to legend, it was used by Saint Patrick as a metaphor to explain the Christian trinity. ‘샘록’은 클로버와 비슷한 토끼풀로 녹색 과 함께 아일랜드를 상징합니다. 아일랜드 를 대표하는 스포츠나 정부기관의 로고에 자주 등장하고, 전설에 따르면 패트릭 성 인이 그리스도교의 삼위일체를 설명하는 데 사용했다고 합니다. 8
